A number of years ago I was dating a girl named Sue. She was a very attractive girl, pretty enough to have been a model around twenty years old with brown hair down to her waist. She had always had her hair long and never had it cut professionally. For the first year we were going out she kept her hair very long and only had it trimmed once. She would always say how much she loved having long hair and took very good care of it. I never in million years would have dreamt that she would cut it short. Then one day in the spring, one of her coworkers got her long hair cut very short. I made an off the cuff comment to my girlfriend that I thought it looked good on her. I also made the comment that I thought short hair was coming back in style.
A couple of days later, she told me she had made an appointment to have her hair styled at the local salon. This surprised me because I know she had never been to a salon before in her life. She seemed really nervous but went through with it. After her trip to the salon she came home with a new style with bangs and the back a trimmed a few inches above the waist. She asked me how I liked it and I encouraged her by saying it looked great and was a big improvement. She said she liked it too and was glad she did it.
This began a series of trips to the salon over the next six months. About two months after the first trip she got her next haircut, now the bangs were above her eyebrows, some layers on the sides. The back was still quite long but now halfway up her back and about six inches shorter. I continued to encourage her to go shorter saying it was a big improvement.
With her third haircut it was obvious Sue had decided she was done with long hair and going towards a much shorter style. She had it cut into a kind of shag with layers though out and now it was cut just below her shoulders. I liked it but she said she couldn't stand it. For several weeks she kept complaining about it saying it was too hard to style and she wished she had left it long and that she wanted to grow it out. But I always got the feeling she was using it as an excuse to take it much shorter.
One day about a week before she was starting a new job in the city, I came home from work and I was surprised to find she had cut it short. As I approached her I could see the bangs were above her eyebrows, the sides were cut just above the ear lobes and short layers through out. Then with a smile she asked me to take a look at the back. She turned around and looked down at the ground exposing her neck. I couldn't believe how short it was; it was a couple inches above the collar and all short layers. It was a dramatically shorter haircut. I was ecstatic and let her know that I thought it looked great and it really did. I told her it looked very professional and would help her with her new job. She agreed and said she really liked it, but later made the comment she had asked for an even shorter cut, but the beautician had talked her into this one.
Sue g
ot a lot of positive feedback and encouragement on her shorter style. She did not wait long for the next cut, maybe five or six weeks. She mentioned she made an appointment to get her haircut in a couple of days. I knew it was going to be a much shorter cut as her hair really didn't look like it needed a trim. I encouraged her any way and said she looked like she was ready for another cut. When she left, she seemed very excited about going to the salon. She said "wish me luck". She came home this time with an extremely short haircut with the hair cut around her ears and in a tight point in the back. Her ears and neck were fully exposed and her hair was not touching the ears at all. It was obvious that her hair had been shaped with clippers on the sides and in the back. There was no length anywhere except short bangs in the front and a little length on the top. I couldn't believe she would go this short this quickly. It was early December and her first haircut had been in May. But it seems once she decided she wanted it really short, she was on a mission. In just over six months she went from waist length to around the ears. We both loved it she continued to get very short haircuts every couple of months for about a year. During one of her haircuts during the summer she even took it shorter with a buzzcut in the back and on the sides. Another time she came home and the stylist had left it a little longer in the back. She said it was too long and asked me to cut it shorter for her, which I gladly did.
The last time I saw her she had grown it back and it was long, but during the three-year period I really enjoyed encouraging Sue to keep taking it shorter and I know she really enjoyed doing it as well.
