From the outside it looked like any other barber shop. The front window had in bright red letters "Flattops R Us". As I would pass this place every day on my way to work, I wondered what it was like inside. Finally I had the courage.
One Friday afternoon at the beginning of a long weekend as I passed by something urged me to stop. Once inside I noticed it was different. The first thing that caught my eye was the lady behind the first chair. She had black hair cut in a gorgeous high and tight flattop. She was wearing a red mohair turtleneck that was breathtaking. The second chair had a barber wearing a Mohawk and a cashmere sweater dress. WOW.
This was all new to me as my hair had been at least waist length for the last 15 years or so. It was auburn with curls ever so gently. I always liked it when I saw any man with a flattop. I think they are so sharp. I have always wondered what I would look like with one.
As I signed in at the desk, I was greeted by a cute lady wearing a fur coat. She asked me what I wanted. I told her I wanted a haircut. She led me down the back stairs. As soon as we got down there I saw more sweaters and furs than I had ever seen in my life. She said, "Before we cut your hair, we need you to pick out a sweater and a fur." I gladly did. I found a wonderful angora sweater dress with a turtleneck in a smashing red. I found a full-length mink coat as well.
ound out her name was Candi. I told her mine was Sherry. As soon as I had picked out my dress and fur we went back upstairs. As soon as we got upstairs, Candi led me to an empty chair. She took off the fur and I saw a cute mohair jumpsuit. I also noticed her flattop which up to now had been covered by a beret.
Candi placed the cape, made out of fur I might add around me. She asked how I wanted my hair cut. I told her I had not had short hair in a real long time. I told her I like flattops. She said you came to the right place.
The next thing I knew she had some clippers just below my ears. She gave me a clipper ear length bob. She then took the clippers and started going up the back. That was fun. After she finished with buzzing the back, I felt the clippers going up the sides. She stopped long enough to ask if I wanted a landing strip. Having no idea what she was talking about, I asked her to explain. She told me that a landing strip was when the top of the flattop was cut freehand without using a comb. I said sure. When she finished I got to see my new look. It was so clean and crisp.
I took my sweater and fur and paid for the haircut. I think I will definitely return to "Flattops R Us soon."
