?Mom, please can I go to the party on Saturday evening? Everyone is going to be there, all my friends. Everyone who is everybody is going to be there. It is the party of the school year,? Jessica begged her mother. ?Please, Mom, they need to know by Friday because I need to order the tickets.?

?And how much is all of this going to cost me?? her mother asked. ?I am sure you are going to want a new dress, new shoes, a new hairstyle. And of course you are going to want me to pay for all of this.?

?Not all of it,? Jessica said. ?I have some money put aside.?

?Yeah right, your job at McDonalds will pay for all of this,? her mother said. ?How much? Tell me how much you are going to ask me for.?

?I have $120.00 in my bank account,? Jessica said.

?That is more then enough. I should not have to pay for any of this if you have that much money in your account,? Mom said.

?Mom, I need to save some of that for bus transit to work, clothes for the summer and other things,? Jessica said.

?What other things?? Mom said.

?Girl things, you know,? Jessica said. ?Come on, Mom, all I am asking is that you cover half the cost and I promise I will baby-sit Bobby anytime you need me to over the summer, provided my schedule does not interfere.?

?Look Jessica, you know things have been hard since Dad left. I can?t afford to give you that kind of money. I agreed to let you get a job so that you would have money for the things you might want to do this year. You are 17 years old. You should be able to accept responsibilities for things you want. Your dad felt you had worked hard enough in school to deserve a part-time job, provided you kept your marks up. And if you have $120.00 in your account and this party is so important to you, then, you pay for it yourself. I should not have to pay for it,? Mom said.

?Mom, everyone is going to be styled to the ?t?,? Jessica said.

?That is more then enough to find a nice dress at Wal-Mart, get a decent pair of shoes at Payless, and get a decent haircut at First Choice. If you want to go to this party, you can afford all your accessories. I will give you the money for your haircut but I don?t want to see a little 2 inch trim like you had done last time. I expect to see at least a good six inches off the back. Your hair is too long as it is and you are not taking care of it,? Mom said.

?6 inches? Mom that is too drastic,? Jessica said. ?Everyone likes my long hair. It is my statement.?

?What statement? Look at it, what is this supposed to be? You call this a perm?? Mom said. Jessica had had her long sandy blonde hair permed the last time she went to the salon. When she got home, she was so excited but when Mom found out that it cost as much as it did and that Jessica had gone to the fanciest salon in the city to get it done, well, she was not impressed at all.

Jessica threw her hands up. ?Mom you liked it at first,? Jessica said.

?Yeah, before I found out you paid $60.00 for it,? Mom said. ?Look, $20.00 is all I can afford to give you. Take it or leave it. Yvette works at the First Choice. Phone her, she does a good job. As a matter of fact, I will call her because I need a trim too. I am sure if you tell her what you want done, she can do just as good a job as the fanciest salon in town. As a matter of fact, I am willing to bet she could do an even better job. You know the rent is due next week. I have to give Bobby $40.00 to get him enrolled in camp for the summer. Unless you want to pay the bills.? Mom took $20.00 out of her purse and handed it to Jessica.

Jessica took it and folded it up and placed it in her pocket. ?Thank you, Mom. I appreciate it,? Mom said as Jessica walked away. No point in fighting with Jessica anymore. ?I just wish you were 18 and I could tell you to get out of my house. I have never seem such an unappreciative person in my entire life.?

That evening Jessica was home looking after the kids as her mother went out on a date. She eventually feel asleep on the couch and did not realize that her mother did not get in till after 2:00am. Her mother threw her purse on the chair beside the telephone along with her coat. She found Jessica asleep in the living room, grabbed a blanket and draped it over her. She wrote a note for Jessica, reminding her about her appointment with Yvette the following afternoon after school. Then quietly she ascended the stairs so as not to wake Jessica from her sleep.

The next morning, Jessica woke early, got the two little ones up and dressed for school. She fed them breakfast and got them off to the bus. She came back into the house and walked upstairs to her bedroom. She grabbed her school books and walked past her mother?s room. She was in a deep sleep and thankfully she did not have to go into work until the late shift. Jessica walked down the stairs and noticed her mother?s purse lying on the floor. Jessica picked it up and for some unknown reason, she noticed a bulging white envelop inside the purse. She opened it to find one hundred $20 bills. Jessica looked astounded. ?Where did this come from?? she said. ?And she said she could not give me $60 to go to Chez Andres to get a hair cut. Well, she is not going to miss it if I sneak another $40.00.? With that she opened her mother?s black wallet and took an extra $40.00.

?It is not like she is going to miss it if she has $2000.00 in her purse,? Jessica said. ?Besides, I will be home in time to replace it. She won?t know.? With that Jessica headed out the door to go to school. On the way to school, she walked past Yvette?s store. Yvette was just opening and she smiled Jessica walked past. ?Hi, Jessica. I will see you after school today?? Yvette said.

?Mom told me to give you a message. She agreed that I could go to the campus salon and have my hair done there by one of the students. Besides the instructor will be there. If anything goes wrong, he will fix it. Bye Yvette, I am late,? Jessica said as she hurried off.

Yvette looked. ?Jessica? I never knew they had a hairstyling course at the school. Since when?? she asked.

?It was just offered starting this year. They let the students get their hair cut and the teacher grades the student on presentation,? Jessica said.

Yvette looked kind of funny when Jessica said that. ?Oh well, I hope your Mom knows what she is doing,? Yvette said. ?Have a good day at school. Yvette walked into her shop. ?Something is not right here,? she said to herself. ?I am going to call the school. I know someone who owes me a favor. I am going to get to the bottom of this. There is no way she would never let Jessica get butchered by a student barber in the school. I know she wants good things for Jessica and I know she cannot afford them. But I only charge Jessica $12.00 compared to my regular price. Jessica is lying. Something is going on here.?

At school, Jessica could hardly wait to get out of class. At break she found a payphone and called Andre at Chez Andre?s salon. She got lucky as Andre had just received a cancellation of a 3:30 appointment. ?Yes, Jessica, I can take you at 3:30 this afternoon??.Sure, some curls and a bit of a trim???.How much are we looking at????????.Yes, $60.00 should be right??????.Okay, I will see you at 3:30.?

In the meantime, Yvette called the guidance counselor at the school, posing as the mother of a supposed new student transferring into the local high school. ?What sort of classes would you have that could help my daughter decide what she wants to do after graduation??????..Yes, she likes the fashion industry???????..She has always said she would like to get into the hair industry??????.Do you teach cosmetology????????.Oh, that is too bad!????????..She is going to be really disappointed???????Yes, they offer it here?????????Oh well, I guess we will have to find some other way???????Yes, she is taking it here in her present high school???????.Well thank you for your time.? Yvette looked up as she placed the receiver back on the hook. ?She lied to me,? she said. ?That girl lied to me. Her mother is going to kill her,? Yvette said. Yvette picked up the phone but she put it back down. ?It is none of my business.? She went to the back and stocked her station.

At 11:00, Jessica?s mother walked into Yvette?s salon. Yvette smiled at her. ?Be right with you, Helen,? she said. Yvette finished with her client and collected money her money. She walked back to her chair. ?I think you are next, Helen.? Helen got up and walked to the chair. Helen sat back and crossed her legs. Yvette caped her and pulled the chair back as she shampooed Helen?s black hair. ?I heard they are teaching cosmetology this year at the high school. Did you know about that?? Yvette said.

?No, I didn?t,? Helen said. ?I wish Jessica would some sort of career plans besides working at the stupid McDonald?s. What can she possibly get out of that??

?I hear you. She is a good kid. I could use someone like her as an assistant. I think she could have a future here. Maybe you should talk to the counselor and see if you could enroll Jessica into the course. I would be willing to sponsor her for her co-op placement,? Yvette said. Yvette pulled the chair up and turned it around so that Helen was looking at her reflection. ?So, Helen, what are we doing today? A usual trim around the back and sides?? Yvette picked up a comb and a pair of scissors. She started snipping away at Helen?s hair. Before too long, Yvette had a blow-dryer in her hand and Helen was ready to go. Yvette un-caped her and Helen followed her up to the desk to pay for her cut. She opened her wallet to discover that her wallet was minus $40.00.

?Oh my. What did I do with it? I am short $40.00,? Helen said. ?Let?s see. I gave $40.00 for Bobby?s summer camp. I gave $20.00 to Jessica to get her hair cut this afternoon. I paid the phone bill. I should have $120.00 for groceries and the rent money????????.The rent money?? Helen found a brown envelop inside her purse. She counted out the bills inside and found a forty dollar loss. ?Yvette, I am so sorry. I can?t pay you. I was out last night and I seem to have spent more money then I thought I did. I am late for work too. My shift has been split. I have to work from 12:30 till 3:30. I am off for 2 hours and then I have to go back and work from 7:00 till 3:00am. Could I come back during my break and give you the money. Besides Jessica will be here then and we can go for lunch together?????????..? Helen said.

?Um, Helen?????????.I don?t want to upset you. I saw Jessica this morning on the way to school. I tried to engage her in conversation but she looked troubled. She said you had given her permission to go the campus salon to get her hair done. She cancelled her appointment with me,? Yvette said. ?Helen, this is none of my business but there is no cosmetology course at the campus. Jessica lied to me,? Yvette said.

?What? My daughter telling lies?? Helen said. ?She took the money! She was mad at me last night because I would not let her go to Andre?s salon. She wanted a really swanky style for the school dance. I told her that I could not afford to give her $60.00 for Andre. She must have found my purse this morning. I left it on the telephone chair. I got home really late this morning. Yvette I am sorry,? Helen said as she sat down. ?That girl is going to get it. Yvette, how would you like to teach a serious life lesson to a 17-year old teenager??

?What did you have in mind?? Yvette said.

?If she is going to Andre?s for a style, she is going to try and replace the money she took sometime this afternoon. She will have to go to her bank to withdraw the money. She of course, does come straight home after school. I suggest we be there to greet her when she walks in the door and you get to give her the cut of your dreams and she gets to learn a lesson about lying and stealing. Oh, and Yvette, she will be paying for it,? Helen said. ?Fourty dollars, I owe you? Forty dollars she will be paying for your special.?

?Sounds like a good plan,? Yvette said. ?I think I can leave the salon for an hour. Wait, we should find out what time Jessica is going to be out of the salon. I think I can do something about that?? Yvette picked up the phone and phone Andre?s salon. ?Is there a chance I could make an appointment with Andre for this afternoon?????????..Oh, that is too bad???????.Any chance he might have a cancellation?????????..He did? Some student in need of a swanky style for the school dance?????????.Yeah, I guess you must be really busy????????..Just booked this morning??????????.So if I would have called at 10:45, I would have got it????????No that is okay. I will go and see Yvette, maybe she could take me in. Besides your salon is really not as good as everyone says it is. Thanks?????????? Yvette said as she hung up the phone. ?3:30. She gets out of school at 3:00, doesn?t she? What time did you have to be back on your shift??

?7:00pm. Shall we say you come to my place for a bowl of soup and a sandwich and your appointment with Jessica?? Helen said.

Yvette nodded her head. ?It does quiet down a bit around 4:30. I can leave Melissa in charge of the salon and be back by 6:30 to close,? Yvette said.

?Thanks Yvette,? Helen said.

?No thank you. Anything to turn a good kid away from wrong,? Yvette answered. ?I will hold your receipt until I get the money from Jessica. I know you are good for it.?
