It was waiting in the barber shop that afternoon, when the woman and the girl came into the shop, the two barbers were both busy on cuts while two youngsters were still waiting. One barber's clippers snipped the boy and the other a barber was cutting a girl of about ten years old and he was almost finished doing a short hair cut on the girl. From the clippings on the floor around her chair one could see that her hair had been about shoulder length and had now been cut right round to just below her ears. Now the barber used a little kind of plant sprayer to wet her hair and was combing it straight down, he took a razor and went around the tightly combed hair to shave away bits that were sticking out.

The girl and her mother who had just arrived were looking at the girl in the chair, the mother said, "You don’t want it that short, do you?"

The daughter, with long brownish hair that hung loose and almost to her waist, said "I do Mom, can I? I really like it."

"Well, I don't think I like it very much, we will see and ask the barber what he thinks."

At that moment a man came from inside the shop, apparently the owner of the place. He greeted them, looked around and said to the woman: "Are you here for a cut or is it for the little girl?" He had apparently did not like the idea that a girl with such long hair should have it cut all that short.

"Not really," said the Mother," I am not at all happy and I think it is a sin to cut off all that beautiful thick and healthy hair, but she has got it into her head to have it cut and she has been driving me crazy with her whining and wanting short hair."

"I know how you feel madam, short or long hair on her, both will really look nice, but if she wants it short why not cut it short for her. It is her own hair and she is old enough to know what she wants, not so. I have the experience that if we do not give them what they want, after a few weeks you will be back here and she will want a really short haircut. Shall we start?"

"Yes, you are probably right. Just cut it short, it can grow again." replied the mother, still unhappy about the whole affair.

The barber remarked: “For cutting off long hair into a completely new style we always charge a little extra."

“Well," said the woman, “that should be alright, as long as I can have a few Guilder left over after paying for the haircut!"

“Ok, here we go, should we cut it about as short as that girl over there?" He said, pointing to the girl that the other barber had just completed and was taking her payment from her.

“Yes," the mother said, “My daughter liked that style when we came in and said she would like a similar cut – go ahead."

He took a great big clipper of its hook and pulled part of her hair together in his hand from behind her neck. He put the clipper against the hair below his hand and pressed the buzzing machine into her hair. The buzzing clippers ate its way through the thick hair and a coil of approximately eighty centimeters slid slowly to the ground, quickly followed by a second a and third bunch of hair. He clipped away at the ends until the hair formed a straight line across the middle of her neck.

Mother sat in horror watching the beautiful long hair fall victim to the hungry clippers and then the scissors took their sacrifice, and now her girl with long hair was turned into a girl with hair neatly trimmed at neck length. The hair on her right cheek was cut so that her ear lobe just peeked out below the hair. He hung the clippers up again, and with the scissors cut a sharp straight line all the way around her head. He took an even smaller clipper and ran it over her exposed neck to shave off the short hairs that had remained.

Mother looked intently at her twelve year old daughter and had the impression that she was loving the feel of the clippers in her neck!

She told the hairdresser," well, actually I was going to take her to a

“Well Madam, You know, we are good at short hair cuts and you do not need to go to an expensive hairdresser. We would be glad to cut your hair for you and I am positive that it will suite you perfectly."

The girl beamed with pleasure when she saw her finished look in the mirror and pointed with glee as the barber swept her severed heap of locks into the corner.

When they were out of the door the barber said to told his colleagues, “I bet you that we will have that lady here in this chair very soon to have a pretty short haircut herself."
