Debbie Parks glanced at her watch as an older woman, probably in her late fifties or early sixties walked in. That must be Mrs. Engle, Deb said to herself. It had been a long day, so Debbie was happy her last client had finally arrived. "Hi, Mrs. Engle, I presume," greeted Debbie Banks, the newest hairstylist at 'The New Look Salon.' "May I take your coat?" Debbie offered. "Yes thank you," Mrs. Engle said. "It's finally starting to cool off," Mrs. Engle said. The weather had been extremely hot lately, but it got colder in the evening. "My name is Debbie, or just Deb, and I'll be cutting your hair today." Debbie said cheerfully. "Come on back so we can get started." Debbie said. Mrs. Engle followed her to the last styling station and took a seat in the chair. "I don't recognize you dear, are you new?" Mrs. Engle asked. "Yes, I am. I just started here about a week ago." Debbie said. "Oh, that's great, do you like it here?" Mrs. Engle asked. "Yes, it's a fun place to work, and I really like the area. My husband and I moved here from New York, so it's a pleasant change from all the bustling and noise in the city." Debbie said. Mrs. Engle laughed, yes, I suppose it is a pretty big change from such a big city as New York. I bet you gave some wild haircuts though," she said. "Oh, there were some pretty odd people in NYC, but I worked at a pretty upscale salon in the wealthier part of town, so I didn't get too many of those," Debbie laughed. "So why did you decide to move here?" Mrs. Engle asked. "Oh, my husband and I were ready for a change I guess. We just wanted to settle down and start a family, and a big city just didn't seem like the best place to do it. We wanted our kids to live in a nice neighborhood instead of an apartment, where they could have a yard, and play outside, without having to worry about them getting kidnapped or shot or something, you know?" "Oh, yes, well, you picked a good place to settle down. You sure don't have to worry about kidnappings or shootings here." Mrs. Engle said. "Oh, by the way, my name is Barb," Mrs. Engle said. "Well Barb, what can I do for you today?" Debbie asked. "Hmm, I'm not quite sure." Barb said. "Would you like to try a new style today?" Debbie asked. "Something shorter perhaps, it would help to keep you cool in this hot hot weather." "Yes, I think that something shorter sounds good. What do you recommend?" She asked. "Well, let me have a look at your hair, just to see the texture, and shape of your face." Debbie said, as she unwrapped the bun on Barb's head. Her hair was about to her hips, fairly long for someone her age. "Well, your hair sure is long. Are you open for a big change?" Deb asked. "What kind of change do you have in mind?" Barb wondered. "Well, something much, shorter. A bob, or possibly a pixie. You have the perfect features for something short." Deb said. "Well, I had a bob as a child at boarding school. It was just below my chin, and my hair was very curly at the time, and frizzed out, making me look like a poodle." She laughed. "Well, I see a shorter bob, about to here," Deb touched Barb's earlobes. "Then I would cut your hair inverted, so it would be a bit shorter in the back, and I would shave your nape." Debbie said. "Hmm, do you think my hair would frizz out?" Barb said, concerned. "Well your hair is still fairly thick, so I can see where a problem might arise there. And although shaving your nape will take out some of the bulk, your hair will still be most likely to look bushy." Debbie said. Barb nodded, and thought about it. Before she was done thinking, Debbie said, "Or, if you'd like, I could give you a short haircut, like a pixie." "Exactly how short are you thinking here?" Barb asked. "It's up to you, but I suggest that the top be cut between one and a half and two inches, at the longest. Then I would shave the back and sides." "oh, I don't think I want the back and sides so short Deb, if that's ok." Barb said. "Oh, I would use a few different guides on the clippers, so the hair on the back and sides would be longer on the top, and gradually be shaved closer to your head. I would probably start with the one inch guide, then taper the rest to about a quarter of an inch at the bottom." Debbie said. "Well, that doesn't sound so bad." Barb said, thinking a bit more. "You know, the pixie would stay out of your face, and be completely off your neck. It would keep you nice and cool in this heat." Debbie said. "Yes, you are probably right, but I really don't know if I want such short hair." Barb said. "Oh, it would look fabulous on you Barb, trust me. It will make you look years younger." Debbie assured her. "So, what do you say, would you like the pixie? Think of how comfortable it will keep you." Deb said. "Alright, I suppose," Barb said. "Are you sure? I don't want to pressure you into something you might regret." Debbie said. "No, I'm sure. I am sick of this heat." Barb said. "Great! Let's get started, shall we?" Deb said, as she started to pull Barb's long hair into a ponytail. "I'm just going to cut this off before I wash the rest of your hair, it will make it much easier." Debbie said, as she picked up a big pair of shears. "Last change to back out," Debbie said as she held the cold scissors on the base of Barb's nape. "Just get it over with," Barb said, with her eyes closed tightly. Then she heard a loud snick. "Barb gasped. As she lifted her head and looked at herself in the mirror, she noticed how much lighter her head felt without all that hair of hers. "There, the worst part's over." Deb said, patting Barb on the shoulder. "Would you like to keep this?" Deb said, holding up the thick ponytail. "You know, this is a nice thick ponytail, and would be greatly appreciated by Locks Of Love," Debbie said. "What's Locks Of Love?" Barb asked. "It's a non-profit company that makes wigs for children that have lost their hair, whether to cancer, or another disease. People who have ten or more inches cut off can send their ponytail to Locks of Love. It's a great company and helps a lot of kids." Debbie said. "I donated my hair last summer, and it felt so good to know that I made some kid's day. It took a lot for me to cut off my long hair, but I am really glad I did it. Your hair is already cut off, so the biggest step is over. So what do you say?" Debbie asked Barb. "Of course. What a wonderful thing to do!" Barb agreed. "Super! I'll send it tomorrow," Deb said. "Now if you'll just follow me over to the washing station, I'll wash your hair." Debbie said. Barb slowly got out of her chair, and touched her shorn locks. "Wow, my hair feels so weird to run my fingers through my hair and have it so short!" Barb exclaimed. "Yeah, it takes some getting used to, but knowing that your long hair will be given to some kid who is bald really makes it seem worth it. I never regretted cutting my hair when I donated it." Deb said, as she started to wash Barbs shorter hair.

A few minutes later, Barb was back in the styling chair, while Debbie was putting the cape around her neck. Deb used the towel to get some of the water out of Barb's hair. Soon, Debbie had the scissors out, and had started cutting Barb's hair. Little chunks of wet hair flew every which way, and formed a pile in Barb's lap or on the floor. Debbie cut and cut and cut. Barb felt her head getting lighter by the second. Finally, Debbie put the scissors down. "There, now that the bulk of it's off, I can work on the back," Deb said as she picked up the large Oster's and fitted them with a large guide. Barb jumped as she heard the loud POP Hummmmmmmmm of the clippers being turned on. Deb gently pushed Barb's head into her chest, and held the clippers buzzing at her nape. Barb's eyes were shut tight, as the clippers touched her neck. Debbie slowly started to move the buzzing clipper's up Barb's neck. Barb felt those clippers buzzing and buzzing, as they shaved all the way up to her crown. She slowly opened her eyes, noticing how wonderful the clippers felt as they sheared away her hair. The vibrations were so relaxing. Barb un-tensed herself, and enjoyed having her hair shaved off. Debbie shaved slowly, making sure she didn't miss any hairs as she buzzed the clippers up Mrs. Barb's neck. She shaved path after path of Barb's thick hair. She placed the clippers on the left side of Barb's head, and shaved her sideburn off. Deb slowly shaved a few more paths on the side of her head, until it was all buzzed short. Then Deb started on the other side of Barb's head. She gently shaved away Barb's right sideburn. Then she continued shaving the right side of Barb's head. Barb smiled in utter pleasure as Debbie finished shaving the right side of her head. As Debbie turned the clippers off and laid them on the counter, she said, "Did you enjoy that Barb?" "Yes, I did indeed." Barb said, as she smiled. Debbie then took the scissors, and chopped off more of Barb's hair on top. She combed, then cut, then combed, and cut. Snip snip snip, the scissors went as they continued cutting Barb's hair. Debbie finally finished, leaving the hair on top between about 3/4 of an inch, and an inch and a half long. Then she picked up the clippers and switched on a smaller guide. Then Deb turned them on, and started re-shaving the back of Barb's head. Buzzzzzzzzzzzzz Buzzzzzzzzzzzz Buzzzzzzzzzzzzzz. Soon, the back and sides of Barb's head had been reduced to one half an inch. Momentarily Deb turned the clippers off. She took the guide off of them, and picked up a comb. She popped them back to life, and held the comb along the top edges of Barb's hair, as she shaved over the comb, blending the hair along the top of Barb's head. When it was all evened out, Deb pushed Barb's head back down, and started shaving upwards. She held the comb about an inch above the hairline, and buzzed up it. Debbie continued to buzz over the comb, until the back was tapered nicely, then she started shaving Barb's left sideburn. She again placed the comb a bit above the sideburn, and shaved over it. Next, Deb shaved and tapered the other side of Barb's head. Barb shuddered in utter pleasure as Deb continued shaving her hair. Debbie re-shaved the entire back and sides, then turned the clippers off, and picked up a smaller set. These had a much higher pitch buzz. Debbie shaved over the hairline and sideburns only with these little edging clippers, then ran her hand over Barb's head, making sure it was even, then turned them off. Debbie then unsnapped the cape from around Barb's neck, and shook it out. "What do you think?" Deb asked. "Oh, it's lovely. You were right, it took years off me." Barb answered. "It feels so light and soft too," she said as she ran her fingers through her freshly shaved hair. "Now, how much do I owe you?" Barb said, reaching for her pocketbook. "Fifteen dollars, please." Debbie said, as she walked over to the front desk. Barb followed her, and paid Debbie twenty dollars for her haircut, then got her coat and put it on. "Should I book you for a trim right now?" Debbie asked. "Oh, I can make an appointment in a month or so. I usually only get it cut that often." Barb said. "Oh, well hairstyles like yours require more upkeep. You should come in every week to have the back and sides shaved, and every other week to trim the top." Debbie said. "Oh, well then when is a good time for me to come in?" Barb asked. "Let me see," Debbie said, as she looked at the appointment book. Today is Tuesday, so you'll want to come back next Monday or Tuesday. I have openings at ten, three thirty and six on Monday, and eleven, four or five thirty on Tuesday." "Well, I think the ten o-clock on Monday would work out the best." Barb said. "Great, I'll book the ten slot on Monday, then when would you like to schedule your trim and another shave for?" Debbie asked, as she jotted down Barb's first shave appointment. "I have no appointments on Monday, between nine thirty and two, and I have openings at four, five forty five, and seven fifteen. Tuesday is pretty busy, but I could fit you in at twelve thirty or three o-clock." Debbie said. "When is the best time for you?" Barb asked. "Probably ten thirty on Monday. That would give me some free time to clean my station and supplies, and prepare for the rest of the day." Deb said. "Ten thirty sounds fine." Barb said. "Ten thirty on Monday it is." Debbie said, as she made a note in the schedule book. Then she took a business card out of the holder, and wrote down the times for Barb's shaves and trim, then signed her name, and handed it to Barb. "The number for the front desk, and my personal station are both listed on my card." Debbie said, as she handed the card to Barb. "Splendid! I'm so glad you cut my hair today. You are a wonderful addition to the staff. I'll see you on Monday." Barb said, as she walked out of the shop. Debbie walked over to the front door, and locked it up. She walked back to her station, and swept up the the hair on the floor. Then she grabbed her jacket and purse off her hook in the staff room, turned the lights out, and walked out the back door. What a great day. Deb said to herself, as she walked out to her car.
