WARNING: This story involves children who get their heads shaved. Prologue
Jennifer and Alex have returned from their visits to their respective families of the Christmas and New Year's Holidays. (Home for the Holidays and Happy New Year) During their drive back to the city on the evening of January first, her cousin Risa had called Jennifer. It had been a week since Jennifer had left her parents' home. Risa's nine year old daughter had been utterly entranced by Jennifer's bald head and was determined to get her own head shaved. Despite Risa's admonition that Erica was not to mention getting her head shaved again until school was out, Erica had found a way around it by complaining about her hair at every opportunity. Risa was only mildly bothered by Erica's determination to be allowed to have her head shaved because Risa herself had been impressed by Jennifer's beautifully elegant bald head and was seriously considering getting her own head shaved for Jennifer's wedding in July. After more thought and a consultation with her husband Thom, she decided she wanted to get her own and Erica's heads shaved and to keep them shaved until the wedding, but she felt she needed an excuse, such as the charity fundraiser that Jennifer had mentioned to her. Jennifer said that it was St. Baldrick's, a nationwide organization that raises money for children's cancer research. She also suggested that Risa could use the ploy of asking for people to sponsor her and Erica for a week of keeping their heads shaved with a donation of a specific amount. Risa thought that was a great idea and immediately got started by signing up herself and Erica and beginning to solicit sponsors.
Monday January 2nd
Jennifer and Alex were back to their regular routine of showering together and Jennifer shaving her own head. After their breakfast of scrambled eggs and bacon they hailed a taxi and were at their respective offices before nine O'clock.
“Good morning Barbara. How were the holidays for you?”
“It was great. Everybody likes my short haircut and said that it was very flattering. And You'll get a big surprise when you see Deana too. How did everything go with you?”
“I thought maybe she'd do something for the holidays. She seemed pretty eager. We had a wonderful time. Alex's sister got her head shaved while we were there. She looks super and even her Mom ended up liking it and encouraged her to keep it shaved. Oh, and my cousin Risa and her daughter Erica will probably get their heads shaved at a St. Baldrick's fundraiser in the spring sometime. It looks like I'll have a bald Matron-of-honor and bridesmaid as well as a bald flower girl. Isn't that funny,” Jennifer laughed.
“Everyone's getting into the act apparently. You're hard to resist,” Barbara laughed. “Anyway, there's nothing on your schedule for today.”
“That good. I'll be able to take care of a few loose ends and be ready if anything big shows up in the next few days.”
Jennifer sat down at her desk and started looking through her in box at the few items that were in it. A couple of memos to read and take not of, but nothing that would impact her group. She picked up her phone and dialed Deana's number.
“Hello, Deana Sanchez here,” she answered.
“Hi, Deana. It's Jennifer. When you're not busy stop by my office.”
“Actually I'm not busy now so I'll be there in a minute.”
“OK. Take your time. I'm still reading a couple of memo that don't affect us.”
A minute or two later Deanna knocked on the door and stepped into Jennifer's office.
“Well, well. Your new look suits you beautifully.”
“Thanks. I'm extremely happy with it too. The longer I have it the better I like it.”
“That's good. How long have you had it?”
“I went to your barbershop on Saturday before Christmas. Millie did it for me. I had an electric shaver, but it didn't work very well, so I bought a good one on Monday. That's what I've been using. It does a pretty good job. What do you use?”
“A wet or dry shaver, but I always use a shaving gel to get a close shave.”
“I didn't realize that they had something like that. That sounds like the way to go. I suppose I'll have to get one of those if it gives a closer shave than mine.”
“I don't know if it's closer or not, but it's more comfortable and less irritating.”
“Well that would be worth it. Of course you won't be shaving at all pretty soon.”
“That's true. Alex says that I only need to shave no more than every other day. After my next laser treatment I'll probably shave infrequently - perhaps once a week or less.
“I'm for that, but I'll need to have a much longer trial period than two weeks before I know whether I want to go that route.”
“Absolutely. It was a year and a half for me. Alex's sister Julie got her head shaved last week and she's very enthusiastic about it. I told her that she should keep it shaved for at least a year before she considers going further.”
“That's good advice. I'll remember it. I do like how I look though. I'm feeling very comfortable with it. One thing I didn't realize was how quickly you start feeling cold in this weather if you have a bald head and don't wear something on it.”
“That's the only downside that I've discovered. A warm hat or knit cap is a necessity this time of year. But it is so nice in the summer when it's hot and you're lounging under some shade.”
“Sounds wonderful. I look forward to it, but right now I'd better get back to work.”
“Right. We did go on a little long about that. I just wanted to know if everything went well for those two days and if there's anything that came up that needs my attention.”
“Not a thing. A lot of the group took Friday off. It was very quiet.”
“I thought that would be the case. I'll be taking time off this spring when we move into our new condo so you'll have some more time running the show. I'll probably use up all of my accumulated leave which is somewhere around five weeks. We'll talk about it more as it gets closer.”
“OK. Anything else I need to know?”
“Don't think so. I'll keep you up on developments.”
“OK,” Deana left to return to her own office.
That evening after having Thai carry out, Jennifer and Alex were quietly bringing each other up to date about separate conversations with members of their families they had had during the past two weeks. Alex was especially interested in what had transpired with Jennifer and her Mother the last day of their visit.
“I thought she would come around, but I didn't realize just how unhappy she was about you being bald. Your Dad told me that he hadn't had any luck at getting her to be more accepting.”
“It was Risa and Lucie who finally figured out what was happening. Mom was thinking of me as a rebellious teenager who was just trying to do things to upset her. They got through to her and said she had to let go and see me as a responsible adult.”
“She must have gotten the message.”
“By the next morning she had realized what she was doing. She accepted the fact that I was almost thirty years old and not a rebellious teenager. I'm sure it was still difficult for her, but she was able to see that I was still the same person and that I was successful and responsible – I was just bald. That's my phone. It's Tony. I need to talk to her.”
Alex nodded his acquiescence and started cleaning up the left over Thai food and dishes that sat on the coffee table.
“Hi Tony. It's good to hear from you.”
“Jennifer! It's been three weeks since we last talked. You've been busy. I have a ton of questions to ask you,” Tony laughed.
“I got a few for you too, along with a lot of information. So how did the holidays treat you?”
“As well as I could have expected. I did get invited to Christmas dinner with my Aunt Mary. I thing you've met them. They live over in Newton. And Ernie from work invited me to a New Year's party. That was fun, but Ernie just needed someone to go with him so he wouldn't be a lame duck. How about you. How did you Mom react to you being permanently bald? She wasn't happy last summer you told me.”
“We got off to a rough start, but Risa and my sister-in-law Lucie finally got her to realize that she had to let go. Now we're good friends again. She gave me a little peace offering. It was a knit cap that she made ten years ago. She said she didn't want me to freeze my beautiful bald head.”
“Wow. That's wonderful. So now things are back on track. She's going to be OK with you as a bald bride?”
“I'm sure she will be. She was relaxed the next couple of days and let me know that she thought I looked beautiful and elegant. She even patted my head a few times. When we left she hugged me and pulled my head down so she could kiss me on the top of my head. I thought that was funny and nice. I asked Risa to be my Matron-of-Honor and she was eager to do it. She likes my bald head. After a couple of days Lucie admitted she liked it. She's going to be part of the wedding too. She'll be in charge of the guest book.”
“That turned out well. I glad. How about Alex's family? I know you said that his Mom had been pretty blasé about you being bald.”
“They're great Tony. I think his Dad has a little 'thing' about bald women. His Mom, Nora, took it in stride and said that I looked good. But listen to this. I went with Julie, his sister, to do some errands and the first place we stopped was a hair salon. She took me in with her and said she was getting her head shaved. And she did. She intends to keep it shaved too. So now I'll have a bald bridesmaid. We went to a big community New Year's Eve party and had fun. New Year's day Nora was sitting beside Julie and told everybody that she thought Julie looked very sweet and innocent and that she hoped she would keep her head shaved. Julie vowed that she would.”
“A bald bridesmaid! That's pretty unusual. Now I'm beginning to understand that message you sent me about a beaded head covering,”
“That's part of it, but the most interesting thing is that Risa is going to be a bald Matron-of-Honor. She called me while we were driving back and wanted to know about St. Baldrick's. Erica had been bugging her about getting her head shaved like mine, so she decided to do it for St. Baldrick's and keep them both shaved until after the wedding.”
“No way! That's absolutely mind blowing. How do you know that?”
“We talked on the phone last night on our way back. Erica had been lobbying her ever since I arrived. Risa liked the way I looked and decided she wanted to try it. Thom was supportive too. So she called me to get the name of the charity. She had forgotten it was called St. Baldrick's.”
“I suppose that you want me to be bald too.”
“I'm saying no such thing.” Jennifer laughed. “You know that. I would never even imply that I'd like you to be bald for the wedding. I want you to be my Maid-of-Honor just the way you are.”
“I'm going to stick out like a sore thumb. How many more bald women are going to be involved?”
“I may ask Deana if she'd like to help serve the punch and wedding cake. Both Alex and I have such small families that we've just about recruited everyone already. Hal is going to be an usher. Alex's college buddy is going to be best man.”
“It's going to be a unique wedding. I'd better let you go. Keep me posted.”
“Will do. We need to have lunch sometime soon. I'll give you a call.”
“Right. We haven't seen much of each other for the past year. You seem to be pretty well occupied,” Tony laughed.
“I think we've settled down a little and I sure don't want to be too neglectful of my friends. I'll definitely call you.”
“OK, bye.”
Monday January 16th
Two relatively uneventful weeks had passed. The wedding plans had progressed minimally beyond the state they had been in when Jennifer and Alex had returned to their apartments. Their condo was still scheduled to be ready for occupation by the middle of April. There was little more they could do for the moment. So they relaxed in one or the other of their apartments. This particular night Jennifer had prepared a nice dinner in her apartment and they were relaxing when Jennifer answered the phone only to hear the excited voice of Risa.
“I did it Jennifer!” Risa said excitedly.
“Risa? Did What? Got set up with St. Baldrick's?”
“Yes! We're all going to be involved. Thom thought it was a great idea. You know how he's already got that bald spot? Well, he said he had considered getting his head shaved anyway and doing it for a good cause is even better. We're looking for sponsors. I already have ten at fifty dollars a week. That's ten weeks. I'm only asking for fifty dollars a week. We need to raise twenty six hundred dollars to make it a full year. That's our goal. Thom is doing it at work and Erica and Danny are handing out half page pledge cards to all the kids in their schools to take home. I'm sure we can make it. I'm doing it at the Unitarian Church we attend and at some of the organizations I belong too. My neighbors are going to help. The shaving event is going to be on the Community College campus in the old converted gym. There are already at least a dozen people getting shaved. Erica is so excited she can't stand still.”
“That's wonderful Risa. So you're going to be the first bald family in your area!”
“Sure looks like it. I hope you and Alex can come.”
When is it?”
Didn't I tell you? I'm so excited I must have forgotten. It's on the eighteenth of March, the day after St. Patrick's day and it's only two weeks before Erica's birthday. It's perfect!” Risa said excitedly.
“Well, send me some of your sponsor forms and I'll probably be able to help you a little. And I'll definitely come if I can. I'll have to take off from work that Friday and fly down. I sure want to be involved somehow.”
“Thanks Jennifer. That's great. I'm really excited about doing it. I'm going to be doing a lot of shaving for the next year and I'll need a good shaver. What kind of shaver do you use?”
“It a Grandsonic wet or dry rechargeable. It's quite good and it doesn't irritate your skin. That's important for Erica and Danny. How often do you plan to shave them?”
“That's a good question. I hadn't even though about it. Every other day maybe.”
“That's about right I expect. Probably three times a week. And use a good soothing moisturizer. Oh, and sunscreen in the summer too.”
“Oh my gosh. You're right. We'll all have to be careful about the sun. This is getting more complicated than I thought it would be.”
“Once you get the routine figured out it gets easy.”
“I suppose. Well I'd better get your sponsor sheets ready to go in tomorrow's mail and get these two maniacs to bed. You can probably hear them in the background.”
“I hear them. Give them both hugs and kisses for me. Tell them I look forward to having the best looking baldy cousins in the world.”
“I'll tell them. Talk to you later.”
“Bye.” Jennifer hung up the phone and turned to Alex.
“That was so funny Alex. She's got the whole family all wound up to do St. Baldrick's and they're getting sponsors to pledge fifty dollars a week with the idea of being bald for a whole year. Isn't that crazy.”
“Like I said, you have a strange effect on people. They all want to get their heads shaved.”
“That's silly. You've said something like that before. Why would seeing me do that.”
“I think it has something to do with your attitude. It tells people that you haven't the slightest doubt that you look perfectly fine, that you feel perfectly fine and that you are perfectly fine. It forces people to reevaluate how they respond and when they do they start thinking differently about it. That's when the insidious thoughts start to keep coming back and they can't dismiss them. Not everyone of course, but a few here and there.”
“I suppose so. If it's true I'm happy to keep on doing it. Your sister certainly looks perfectly fine I must say,” Jennifer laughed.
“And I wouldn't be too surprised if we discovered that Mom looks perfectly fine as a baldy either.”
“You think that might happen?”
“She wants Julie to keep her head shaved. How insidious is that idea?”
Pretty insidious, I have to admit. How about a glass of wine.”
“That would be very nice too, especially when it is served by the smartest and most beautiful bald woman on earth.”
“How very nice of you to notice,” Jennifer giggled as she went to her tiny kitchen to pour two small glasses of a nice wine.
Saturday January 28th
Jennifer woke up to the highly pleasurable sensation of Alex gently fondling her breasts and stimulating her nipples.
“Hum. That feels very nice. Now what can I do for you?”
“I'm sure you'll figure out something,” Alex said as he continued his slow, but sensuous process of bringing her to a peak of arousal.
And indeed she did think of something, gently stroking his smooth abdomen and touching his sensitive scrotum, being careful not to bring him to a peak too soon. They continued to pleasure each other for a while before coupling. Then they became a little more vigorous at Jennifer's urging. Her ardor reaching its peak, she had one orgasm and then a second almost simultaneously with Alex's climax.
They lay face to face holding each other for a while then spent more time fondling as they recovered from their exertions.
“Do you think you can muster enough energy to take a shower with me?” Jennifer finally asked.
“Wouldn't miss it for anything,” Alex responded as he turned over, held her head and kissed her.
“I have an appointment with Jackie at eleven. I think there's enough time for you to shave me and I can fix some scrambled eggs and sausage.”
“Sounds like a good deal to me.”
By ten thirty Jennifer was on her way to Ultimate Image, the salon where Jackie had treated her for the past year and a half. She was wearing the knit cap with the short tassel that her Mother had made for her ten years earlier, but had given to her only four weeks ago when she had finally come to accept Jennifer's baldness. Jennifer remembered her words: “I wouldn't want your beautiful bald head to freeze.” Wearing the knit cap she drew no attention from the cab driver as he stopped in front of the shop and Jennifer paid him.
As she tepped into the salon, Darlene greeted her; “Hello, Ms. Colson. Jackie is ready for you. You can go on back to her room.”
“Thanks Darlene. I hope you had a nice Christmas and New Year's.”
“Oh, I did. It was great. How was yours?”
“It was wonderful. I enjoyed myself very much,” Jennifer said as she headed down the hall.
“There you are Jennifer. Let me hang up your coat. That's the cutest little cap. Where did you get it?”
“That's a funny story Jackie. My Mom made it for me when I was in college in Madison, Wisconsin ten years ago, but never gave it to me. She thought it was just to little and simple and stuck it in a drawer somewhere. She finally got over being upset about me being bald. She remembered it and gave it to me the day we left. It was sort of a peace offering. She said that she didn't want my beautiful bald head to freeze.”
“That was very sweet of her. You told me how she had gotten upset the first time you went home with your head shaved.”
“It was worse this time, but my sister-in-law and my cousin helped her figure out what was upsetting her. She still thought of me as her little girl and expected me to be a bride just like she had imagined it when I was ten years old. Once she accepted that I was an adult, it changed everything. Now she thinks that I'm beautiful with my bald head.”
“I guess all Mothers are like that. My Mom had a hard time figuring out that I was grown when I moved here and started working.”
“Well it's over now and we're good friends again. She's a great Mom and was always very supportive. So how have things been with you?”
“I've got terrific news. Wayne went along with my idea of raising money for kids cancer research, and I have over six hundred dollars already in checks and another couple of hundred in sponsor pledges. I did what you suggested and I'm already at four weeks. I'm pledging to keep my head shaved a week for every two hundred dollars. My goal is two thousand dollars. I've got six weeks to make it. I think I can,” Jackie said with obvious enthusiasm.
“Does Wayne know how many weeks you're going to be bald if you make it?”
“Well, he agreed to let me do it when I had two hundred dollars in checks and another two hundred in pledges. He probably thought it would be only a couple of weeks. Now it's four weeks. I haven't told him how much I've collected so far. It's only been three weeks since I started. I'll wait for another week and see where things stand.”
“You're doing great! I've got some good news too. My cousin Risa and her whole family are doing St. Baldrick's in their town and they're working on raising enough for a whole year. Of course they're only asking fifty dollars a week. She had five hundred when we talked a couple of weeks ago. She's my Matron-of-Honor. I probably told you that. Her husband Thom will be an usher, their nine year old daughter Erica will be flower girl and their six year old son Danny will be ring bearer. It's going to be pretty remarkable to see a whole family that is bald,” Jennifer laughed.
“That's fantastic. Did she really want to have to keep her head shaved for such a long time?”
“Actually that was the whole idea. She wanted to stay shaved for at least a year. She had decided that she and Erica would get their heads shaved and keep them shaved until the wedding. She just needed a good excuse for doing it. When she suggested St. Baldrick's to her husband Thom he liked the idea and decided to join in. Danny wanted to have his head shaved too, so they brought him along with them. I plan to go see them all get shaved. I'm sorry I won't be able to see you.”
“That's OK. Wayne and a bunch of people from the salon will be going. We may close the salon at noon that Saturday,” Jackie laughed.
Jackie had already spread the skin desensitizer on Jennifer's head and the fifteen minutes needed for it to take effect had passed.
“I'm ready to do you if you're ready.”
“I'm ready. Go right ahead. I've only been shaving every other day and even that's not really necessary. I probably don't need my brows done again, but go ahead there too, just to be on the safe side.”
“OK. I'll do your brows first,” Jackie said as she got started.
“Did I tell you that I think you'll look terrific with your head smooth and shiny,” Jennifer asked her.
“No, but I'm glad to hear it. I've tried to visualize it, but it's difficult. I thought that I would or I wouldn't have considered doing it. I suspect you have a pretty good eye for it now.”
“It's not just me. I've seen some before and after pictures that are absolutely mind boggling. One that I saw showed a women with shoulder length hair and bangs who didn't look very attractive at all. She looked positively plain, but with her hair cut in a short pixie she seemed to be a different person altogether. She look attractive and her eyes stood out. When she had her head shaved it was absolutely stunning. Her smile lit up her face and she was just outstanding. I could hardly believe it. I think I've figured out what it does a little bit, so I have a better idea of how women will look when they're bald. Don't use a lot of eye makeup. It can easily look gaudy with no hair to draw attention away from your face. A light earth tone eye shadow works, but dark eyeliner doesn't. I learned that lesson when I was at Alex's home and we went to a New Year's Eve party. I overdid my eye makeup a little. When I looked at it again after the party I realized what I had done. I won't make that mistake again.”
“I've seen you enough that I ought to have gotten that message, but thanks for the advice. I hadn't realized that you don't wear any eyeliner,” Jackie said.
“I think eyeliner actually makes your eyes look smaller unless it is very light. I tried using white and that seemed better. I'm not in to fluttering my eyelashes, and eyeliner is just to make you look like you have thick heavy eyelashes.”
“I never thought of it like that, but you're right. I've actually read that somewhere. Well, you're all done. I think you're a baldy now or so close that the difference doesn't matter.”
“I'm sure you're right, but I'm going to have one more treatment before the wedding. I may not shave for the next week and see how that goes.”
“Usually four treatments is all that's needed with this type of laser. Whatever hair grows after that is usually very fine and sometimes light colored. In either case laser treatments aren't very effective and aren't recommended. What we do is give waxings. That gets rid of the fine hairs and after a few treatments they don't grow back. It's not particularly painful either. Most women don't bother with the desensitizer.”
“Well, that's a thought. So if I want to I can end up truly baby smooth,” Jennifer laughed. “I'll certainly consider it. Meanwhile I need to be one of your sponsors. I'm looking forward to coming in for my next treatment and being taken care of by a lovely bald operator!”
“And I'll be delighted to do the honors. I'm looking forward to getting it shaved and keeping it shaved for quite a while.”
“Give me a sponsor pledge card and I'll make out a check for you. Alex will too I'm sure.”
Jennifer handed a check to Jackie.
“Thanks Jennifer. That's very generous,” Jackie said as she saw that it was for a hundred dollars.
“You're welcome. It's for a good cause after all – the children, not you,” Jennifer laughed.
“And I get to indulge myself while helping a good cause. That's a real win-win proposition isn't it?”
“Well, so it is. If we can keep the momentum going we'll solve the children's cancer problem and have thousands of bald women enjoying their liberation from their hair as well.”
Maybe we're onto something here. I guess I'll see you in a few months.”
“Absolutely. When you get it shaved smooth send me a picture. Here's my email.” Jennifer handed Jackie a card with her email address on it as she left the small treatment room.
Paying her bill and putting on her knit cap, she waved goodbye to Darlene as she stepped outside. It had been an unusually cold winter and they had experienced several inches of snow a week earlier, some remnants of which could be seen in a few shaded areas. Jennifer was made aware of the importance of having a snug and warm cap on her head as a chill breeze struck her. It did nothing to dampen her spirits and her feeling of accomplishment. She could now stop shaving and enjoy the exhilarating feeling of a nearly perfectly smooth and hairless head. Somehow she felt even more self-assured and confident than before. Standing on the corner and hailing a taxi she looked forward to the time when she could dispense with her cap and enjoy the feeling of the warm sun and spring breezes on her head.
When she arrived back at Alex's apartment and let herself in Alex greeted her.
“You look very satisfied.”
“I am. I feel very good. It's as though I've had this long journey and I've finally reached my destination,” Jennifer said as she removed her cap and coat.
“Tell me about it.”
“You already know. It's just that now I feel that I've achieved my goal and I'm bald, not just almost bald or close to being bald, but really and truly bald. I have a beautiful smooth bald head that I love and am proud of and I'm eager for spring to arrive so that I can savor the feeling of the warm sun and breezes on my head. Of course I won't mind having you give it some attention now and again,” Jennifer laughed.
“You're something! And what's inside your head is as beautiful as the outside. You've become the most remarkably self-assured woman I've ever encountered or even imagined. You're setting the bar awfully high for the rest of womankind you know.”
They embraced and kissed as Alex held her smooth head. He could detect the very slight roughness that testified that there was a remnant of her hair still present, but even that would disappear over the coming days as those few remnants stopped growing and were rejected.
“Jackie is going to have her head shaved at St. Baldrick's too. She's already collected eight hundred in checks or commitments from her sponsors. That's enough for her to stay shaved for four weeks. She going for ten weeks. If she does much more than that she'll still be bald when we have the wedding.”
“Another convert! Would you ask her to be in it?”
“Maybe. She and Deana could both serve the refreshments. I think they would like to be part of a wedding in which the bride is bald.”
“That would work. I have some news too. Julie called this morning right after you left. We talked for a while.”
“How's she doing? Any problems?”
“The expected stuff at school, but apparently she's staying cool – no pun intended – and the remarks have largely let up. Aron, the boy she's dating, has been very attentive. Apparently he calls her every day and helps her keep from getting upset about some of the things that have happened. And Mom has been very supportive. She's even volunteered to shave her whenever Julie would like to take a break from doing it herself. Mom keeps telling her how much she likes how she looks and how nice it is to have such a sweet bald daughter. She keeps encouraging her to stay bald. Of course, Julie's still very enthusiastic about being bald and is as determined as ever to stay that way. “
“That's great. It's been a month now. I expect the worst is over and she'll start to feel more at ease around the kids and they'll start taking it for granted. If she makes it through her first year of college, I predict that she'll join the permanently bald set.”
“I wouldn't be at all surprised. With you as an example, a supportive boyfriend and both Mom and Dad encouraging her, she'll have a hard time resisting.”
“I think you're right. Oh, I almost forgot. I sort of promised Jackie that you'd sign on as a sponsor and make a donation. I gave her a hundred dollars. Here's her sponsor card.”
“I'll be happy to give a hundred too. It's for a good cause.”
“That's what I thought. We need to do some grocery shopping. I'm all out of just about everything. Is that OK We should be back in plenty of time to get ready for tonight. I'll fix us a little lunch then we can go.”
“Sounds good to me. I'm ready when you are,” Alex agreed.
Saturday February 25th
A month had passed. Jennifer and Alex were looking forward to moving into their new condo. The builder said that everything was on track and they should have no problem making the April schedule. A week earlier they had been allowed to walk through it accompanied by the work foreman and wearing safety helmets. There seemed to be a lot of work left to do, but the foreman assured them that it would be ready on time.
The St. Baldrick's shavathon was approaching and Jennifer would be attending the one in Clarkton where her family lived. “This is going to be a fun spring. I'll get to see Risa and her family at the St. Baldrick's shavathon, we'll move into our condo and have house guests for the first time.”
“We should have a house warming. You can invite your friends and relatives and I'll invite mine. We could put up both our parents in the condo.”
I like it. That's a great idea. If Julie came she could stay with Tony. I'm sure Tony would be delighted to have her. I don't know if Risa and her family could come. Thom has to work too. If they did come, where would they stay?”
“Well, I presume Thom and Risa would have a day of vacation on Memorial day. Maybe we could do it then.”
“That's an idea. Mom and Dad could just stay for a while. Your folks could too if they want, although Julie would have to get back to school.”
“How about that nice guest house that just opened in the historic district? It's only a block from the Green line.”
“You're just full of good ideas today! That would work. The kids would enjoy riding the train.”
“Is that yours?” Alex asked to the sound of music coming from a cell phone.
“Sure is. I just load that ring tone.” Jennifer hurried into the bedroom to retrieve her cell phone.
“Hi Risa.”
“Hi Jennifer. How are you and Alex?
“We're great. We were just talking about you.”
“You were? I've got some news for you. We passed twenty six hundred yesterday. Erica brought home two more sponsor pledges from her classmates' parents. She's gotten almost five hundred dollars so far. Even Danny has gotten over two hundred.”
“That's terrific. Hold on. I want to tell Alex. Alex, Risa and the rest have made their goal of staying shaved for a year. Isn't that amazing?”
“It's pretty remarkable to be able to do that well, but they're a pretty remarkable bunch after all.”
“He said you're a pretty remarkable bunch,” Jennifer laughed.
“Thanks. We're having fun. I made up separate sponsor pledge cards for each of us. Erica's has a picture of her as a bald girl. She's quite a salesgirl. She persuaded every kid in her class to support her. One family gave her a hundred dollars.”
“You guys are awesome. I really look forward to seeing you all get your heads shaved, especially after you get them all shaved smooth.
“I've already made arrangements for the operators to use those little edgers on us so that it will be as close to smooth shaved as they can get it.”
“You don't miss much do you?”
“Erica and I are very eager to get ours nice and smooth. As soon as we get back home we're going to get everyone shaved so we can go out to dinner together and show off our great looking bald heads!”
“Sounds good to me. Once you get into the routine it gets pretty easy. You might consider getting two shavers so that Thom can do Danny and himself while you do Erica and yourself. Of course it's a lot of fun to have someone else shave you now and again.”
“That's a good idea. Sounds like fun. I think Thom would enjoy shaving me. I know I'd enjoy shaving him. You said you and Alex were talking about us?”
“We were. We're going to try to have a house warming party and I wondered if you you might be able to come on Memorial Day. There's a new bed and breakfast that has opened in Old Town and it's only a block from the green line. It's only fifteen minutes to get here from there.”
“I'd love to do that. By then we'll all be comfortable with our shaved heads and ready to let the world know that we like them that way. I know Erica and Danny will be fascinated by the train too. I'll talk to Thom and see if he can take an extra day off and make it a long weekend there. Will Aunt Alice and Uncle Ray be there. What about Alex's folks?”
“We haven't talked to them yet. I hope they can come. We have room in the condo for both of them. It would be great to have them there.”
“I'll let you know what Thom says. I know he has some vacation coming. He get three weeks now that he's been with the company for five years. I'm sure he'd like to come. Well I have to take Erica to her gym class so I'd better get off the phone.”
“OK. Tell her I'm proud of her for raising so much for the kids who have cancer.”
“I will. Say hello to Alex for me. Bye.”
“I will. Bye.”
“Risa said to say hi. She definitely wants to come. They probably will too.”
“That's good. We'll need to call our folks. After we get that settled we can invite who ever we like. We can easily handle twenty people with the balcony, family room and kitchen.”
“I can ask Tony to help with the hors d'oeuvres. You should ask James too. Isn't he currently unattached?”
“That's right. So you plan to do a little match making?”
“He's a nice guy. I think he and Tony would hit it off quite well.”
“Could be. He'll want to help with things too.”
“I guess we'd better start calling and getting organized then,” Jennifer said laughing.
Friday March 17th
Having said her goodbyes to Alex, Jennifer was on her way to the airport at four thirty in the afternoon. She would be arriving at Clarkton a little before nine. Risa and Thom were picking her up. She would be visiting Alice and Ray Sunday afternoon.
As she walked through the security gate after arriving at the Clarkton regional airport, she was spied by Erica who made a beeline toward her.
“Cousin Jennifer!” she yelled in delight as she wrapped her arms around her.
“Hi Erica. How are you?” Jennifer said as she returned the hug.
“I'm getting my hair shaved tomorrow. I can't wait!”
“It's going to be a lot of fun. I can hardly wait myself. Let me give Danny a big hug too.”
“I'm so glad you could come Jennifer:” Risa said as she embraced Jennifer.
“I wouldn't have missed it for the world. Alex wanted to come too, but he had an important meeting with a major client who's interested in redeveloping a whole block of old run down buildings. He said he would attend the St. Baldrick's event across town on the Donnant College campus where my laser operator is getting shaved. Did I tell you that she's pledged to stay shaved for three months?”
“You didn't. Is she going to be in the Wedding? Alex can cheer her on. He'll see us all at your house warming. Let's get you home. The kids need to get to bed too. You don't have any checked luggage do you?”
“Just my carryon. Hey Thom. You're looking good. Thanks for coming to pick me up.”
“Glad you came. I needed to be reminded just how good Risa is going to look after tomorrow,” Thom chuckled.
“She'll be a real dream boat. No doubt about it. And Erica and Danny will be a beautiful pair of cherubs,” Jennifer told him.
They tumbled into the small sedan that was the family car with Jennifer squeezed into the middle of the back seat flanked by Danny and Erica.
“Cousin Jennifer, I'm going to be so happy with my head all smooth like yours. All the kids at school think it's really neat. I told them they could feel it. When I grow up I'm going to have it done so I don't have to shave it all the time. Mamma said that I could,” Erica chattered.
“I'm sure they'll like it, but some kids might say some mean things. You just have to tell them they're jealous and that you like it and you're going to keep it like that.”
Danny was already starting to go to sleep when the arrived at Risa's house.
“Put your stuff in the guest room while I get these two to bed. Thom why don't you open one of those bottles of wine.”
“How about the Kabinett?” Thom asked.
“Jennifer, have you had anything to eat?”
“Just a little bag of pretzels and peanuts. They didn't even offer those little box meals that you can buy on long flights.”
“For goodness sakes! Thom heat up a bowl of soup for her while I take care of the kids. Let's have some cheese and crackers after the kids are quiet. I like that spatlese with cheese.”
“Right. I'll take care of it.”
An hour later they were sitting around a coffee table in the family room savoring some excellent Riesling Auslese along with a couple of good cheeses. All was quiet upstairs.
“You haven't told me how much you've raised so far - it must be quite a lot.”
“She's a heck of a fund raiser. As of yesterday the total was just over three thousand. She got an awful lot of people to donate fifty dollars to sponsor her. I'm very proud of her. She raised more than fourteen hundred all by herself.”
“Wow! Sixty weeks. That's incredible! Congratulations.”
“It helped that she go us in the local newspaper. A few people called up to say they would give fifty to sponsor her. We're going to get interviewed again tomorrow afternoon after our shaves.”
“You're something else Risa!”
“It's been fun. I think I'm looking forward to getting my head shaved almost as much Erica. I'm sure I'm going to like getting it shaved tomorrow. And I'm sure that after the initial period of getting used to being seen in public with a bald head, I'm going to enjoy it a lot. Every time I see you Jennifer I'm convinced all over again.”
“I'm looking forward to having a bald wife. She'll look terrific and I'm really going to appreciate it. Now me, that's another story.”
“You'll look just fine. And Danny is going to look so cute with his shiny bald head,” Risa said with obvious enthusiasm.
“No doubt about it. You'll be the envy of everyone in the neighborhood,” Jennifer said.
“They've helped a lot and a lot of them are sponsors, but they still think we're a little bit nuts, especially the idea of staying bald for a whole year. I told Charlotte, she lives next door, that I wanted to experience being bald for a year like some of the cancer patients. She still thought it was rather extreme. I don't really care though. If Thom likes me bald I'm going to stay bald.”
“What about Erica?”
“As long as she wants to be bald that's fine with me. I'll be happy to shave her. I'll encourage her to stay bald, but maybe in a year or two she'll change her mind. That will be OK too.”
“That's reasonable. What time do we have to get going tomorrow?”
“It gets started at one pm. I was told there are more than twenty people getting shaved besides us. They're going to have four people doing the shaving. There'll be some talking and they want to have a little contest with us – try to get more donations by selling addition bald weeks at fifty dollars per week. We can all sleep a little late if the kids will let us,” Risa laughed.
“Hum. I just realized that tonight is pretty special. It's the last night I'll spend in bed with a wife who has hair – at least for a year plus,” Thom said chuckling.
“I'd better let you two enjoy your special evening. I've had a long day, so I think I'll turn in pretty soon. Can I help you clean up,” Jennifer offered.
The next morning Jennifer woke up to the boisterous running and laughing of Erica and Danny. She turned over with the intention of sleeping a little longer, but after glancing at the clock she realized that she wanted to get up and join the kids in a little boisterous playing herself.
Getting up, she showered and briefly considered whether she should shave her head. She had shaved yesterday morning and the only reason to do it today was her own desire to be certain that it was baby smooth. After a brief examination looking in the mirror and feeling it with her hand and fingers, she laughed at herself. All right Jennifer she thought. You're getting a little obsessed with this. It can't get any better than it is right now. No one could find a hair even with a magnifying glass. She laughed at herself, quickly got dressed and applied some of the shiny makeup that she used regularly. A little pale eye shadow, a bit of blusher, her lipstick, a pair of earrings and she was ready. She knew to use very little makeup with her bald head, especially eye makeup because it was so much more obvious where there was no hair to draw attention away from her face.
The sound of Erica and Danny laughing in the kitchen drew her there.
“Good morning everyone,”” Jennifer said to the four of them.
“Cousin Jennifer! I'm glad you're up. We're having toast with cinnamon and brown sugar. It's yummy!”
“I hope you're saving some me some too.”
“Mommy, can we make some for cousin Jennifer?”
“If you help I think I can. Get cousin Jennifer a cup and saucer for her coffee and a plate too. Did they wake you up. They're pretty wound up.”
“Actually they did, but I wanted to get up and have fun with them. You guys are having way too much fun. So I want to get in on it,” Jennifer said laughing.
“OK. We were running around chasing each other with pretend shavers. Mommy bought two of them so Daddy can shave Danny. That makes it more fair,” Erica said very seriously.
“That's true. Mommies shouldn't have to do all the work. You're going to look so sweet with your head soft and smooth.”
“Erica, here's the toast. You can put on the brown sugar and cinnamon. Don't use too much,” Risa admonished her.
Danny had brought Jennifer a bowl of fruit, she had poured herself a cup of coffee, and Erica brought her two slices of whole wheat bread with butter, brown sugar and a dusting of cinnamon. She had already taken a few bites of fruit.
“Wow! This is good. You kids are all right! Thanks,”
Erica and Danny grinned at each other before they came back to the table and sat down for another round.
“This is going to be fun,” Thom said as he devoured his third piece of cinnamon toast.
“I should say so! I'm almost as excited as the kids,” Risa said.
Three hours later, they were back in the family sedan heading to the community college on the outskirts of town. Erica and Danny were as excited as ever and even Risa added to the general level of chaos. Finally Thom had to intervene and ask for a little less noise.
There were signs at the entrance to the campus announcing the St. Baldrick's event and more signs pointing the way. Erica and Danny hurried ahead to the amusement of their parents.
“Don't get too far away Erica. Danny you stay with Erica,” Risa called after them.
“Are some of your friends coming,” Jennifer asked.
“A few are. Several people from the church and a few from the neighborhood too. Maybe ten in all.”
“It looks like it's going to be pretty well attended.”
“I talked to the person in charge and she said that we'll be the third or fourth group. We're going to be the main attraction I think,” Risa said.
“You certainly should be. You've got to be the most creative bunch. Everyone else is going to get their heads shaved, but will let it grow out immediately. You're going to be sending a picture of your bald family to a lot of people every month. That's really different.”
Risa went to the sign in table and spoke to the woman sitting there who gestured to a man sitting at a table on the stage at the end of what used to be a gym. After a few minutes of conversation with him, Risa returned.
“We're going to be the fourth group. They're about ready to get started. Our High School girl's gymnastic squad got their coach to pledge along with three of the girls. They're going first.”
“Hello everyone. Welcome to the St. Baldrick's Clarkton shavathon here at the Clarkton community College.”
There was a rather too lengthy speech about the purpose of St. Baldrick's, the importance of their goal of helping prevent and cure childhood cancer and a long list of volunteers who had to be thanked. Finally the MC got down to business.
“We have a wonderful group of very dedicated supporters today. And we're going to have a lot of fun. You'll see some of the most handsome and beautiful bald heads imaginable. First up are three members of the Croydon Wildcats girls gymnastics squad with their coach Debbie Wingfield. Come on up and have a seat and we'll get started. Together they've raised a total of almost two thousand dollars. Give them a big hand.”
There was a round of applause as the four women, all wearing St. Baldrick's tee shirts took their places. In short order they were all clippered to about an eighth of an inch. They had been reluctant to go the bare clipper route, but it was enough to elicit a lot of screaming and shouting form the other team members and other kids from the high school. When they were done there was a mass of kids wanting to feel their bristly heads.
The second group was four men from a local bowling team. They also received a lot of yelling and clapping as they were clipper shaved. One of them even had his eyebrows shaved. The third group consisted of four women who worked at the local hospital. They received a great deal of support form the crowd as they were clippered to bare skin.
Jennifer was tempted to go up to congratulate them. They were all women in their fifties or sixties. She was impressed at how good they looked.
“Our next group is the Barkey family,” the MC announced. “They're pledging to keep their heads shaved a week for every fifty dollars that is contributed to sponsor them. So how about it folks. Let's see how many weeks they'll have to stay shaved. Who's wants them to stay shaved for the first week? Don't let them off. There, the gentleman in the back is taking the first week. The second week is available, who would like it. These weeks are going to go fast, so get your as soon as you can. There, the lady with the red top. That's two weeks. Week three is available. Who wants to take week three? I see two hands up. The lady here in front and the gentlemen in the aisle on the left.”
While this was all happening the Barkey's were sitting in the four chairs with capes around them smiling and enjoying the show. Jennifer saw Risa lean over and say something to Thom and then to Erica. Thom spoke to Danny. They were planning something.
The auction continued. Week five was sold. A moment later week six was sold. That's when all the Barkeys stuck out their hands and gave double thumbs up to the audience, producing a lot of laughing and cheering.
At eight weeks sold the MC decided to start the shaving while still working to sell a few more weeks.
“All right folks. Do any of you want to see these people shaved. When I say shaved I mean really shaved. You'll see it in a little while. OK, here we go. We still have plenty of weeks available. Who wants to have one or even two. These people are desperate to stay shaved for a long time. They've issued a challenge. Are you going to deny them. I know you're more charitable than than. There we go, week number nine to the lady in the pink top. Week number ten. Who wants week number ten? Remember you get regular updates and a picture of them verifying that they're still shaved. And not just a clipper shave, but a real wet shave with a special razor. There! Week ten goes to the gentleman in the orange polo shirt. Folks, you're doing great. How about weeks eleven and twelve before they're finished?”
Erica's simple bob, parted on the side and held with a barrette had nearly succumbed to the clipper wielded by a young woman. Erica was thoroughly enjoying the feeling of the clipper on her head. She had a broad smile that testified to the pleasant sensation of the vibrating clipper making passes over the top of her head, but it was the movement of the clipper from low on her neck to the crown of her head that had sent shivers down her spine.
Danny's head of light brown hair was now essentially invisible as the young barberette behind him worked gently, but efficiently. He sat quietly with little expression on his face until the young barberette spoke to him. “My goodness, but you're going to look so handsome with your head all nice and smooth.”
Danny grinned. He had enjoyed the feeling of the clipper too, after the initial surprise of feeling it all over his head.
“My Mom's going to keep it smooth for a year just like my Dad's,” he replied.
“A whole year? That's a long time,” she said in answer.
“Yeah, but we all wanted to keep it for that long.”
Meanwhile Risa had been chatting with her barberette as she savored the ministrations of the clipper that she wielded with such efficiency.
“Just how long are you planning to stay shaved?” the barberette asked.
“We were committed to more than a year when we arrived. Now they've added what - twelve more weeks? The longer it is the happier I'll be. My cousin, out there in the audience, is permanently bald and she looks fabulous. I'll probably follow in her footsteps. I think my daughter Erica will do the same. She wants to be bald even more than I do.”
“Really! You want to stay bald?”
“I didn't realize how much I wanted to get rid of my hair and be bald until we signed up for St. Baldrick's. Erica was the one who wanted me to let her shave her head bald because she wanted to be like her cousin. I'll be the Matron-of-Honor at her wedding so I was thinking I might shave my head for the wedding, but when Erica kept after me to let her shave her head I decided to go ahead and shave us both and stay shaved until the wedding in July. I just needed a reason to do it. Once we got started with St. Baldrick's I think my subconscious desire to be bald just got unleashed. I was hooked. I've looked at pictures of bald women and girls and I think they all are just beautiful bald. We're all going to look just wonderful bald. And the more I talk about it the more I'm determined to be permanently bald.” Risa laughed as she said the last. It was not something she was going to say to Thom or Jennifer, but having said it she knew it was true.
“You know I've done this before and there have been a few women and girls who obviously liked being bald. One or two actually told me they wished they could stay bald, but you're the first who actually is going to stay bald. I saw a good looking bald women in the audience. That must be your cousin. I've done this quite a few times and I've never considered doing it myself. I'm beginning to think maybe I should sign up next time.”
“Of course you should. Do you work in a salon or a barbershop?”
“Barbershop.”
“There you go. A bald barberette will be perfectly at home in a barbershop. You should try it.”
“I think I will.”
“Folks, you were wonderful. Sixteen more weeks that the Barkeys will be bald. And that's on top of the weeks that they were already committed to. Time to finish off their shaves. They're getting a special treatment with those clippers that shave almost as close as a razor. And there they go,” the MC said as the barber and three barberettes began going over the Barkey's four heads with their five zero edging clippers.
Erica's barberette went over her head very carefully making it as smooth as the edger could accomplish.
“Close your eyes and hold very still now,” she said.
Risa had given specific instruction to Erica's barberette. Erica wanted to be just like Jennifer and insisted that she get her eyebrows shaved off. After a little discussion Risa had agreed and so Erica would be, like Jennifer, bald and browless.
“OK. There you go Erica, a nice clean head. Not a hair anywhere. I think you look very cute like that. Like a little bald angel or something,” she said as she brushed off her head then wiped it with a damp cloth.
“Here they are folks, the four fabulous Barkeys. Let's get them lined up here so everyone can see them. OK, you terrific Barkeys, hold up your signs so that everyone can see how much you raised for children's cancer research: Risa – one thousand four hundred thirty five; Thom – eight hundred sixty; Erica five hundred ten and Danny two hundred fifteen. That a total of three thousand twenty dollars. Folks that's a remarkable achievement. They deserve a tremendous amount of thanks for their achievement and commitment. Let's here it for the Barkeys!”
After a long round of applause, whistling and yelling the MC had one last word.
“Someone just did the arithmetic for me and tells me that they will stay shaved for St. Baldrick's for seventy six weeks. Now that's real dedication. What a marvelous spirit they have. Let's give them the encouragement they deserve.”
Another round of applause followed and the four Barkeys finally left the the stage. They were whisked out of the gym by a reporter from the local TV station. Outside in daylight he could get good video clips while they were being interviewed.
Risa was candid when asked how she felt about having to stay bald for more than a year.
“I've wanted to be bald for a long time. St. Baldrick's is a great cause, so it gave me the perfect reason to get my head shaved and keep it shaved. For me the longer the better just so it benefits the cancer research.”
“That's an unusual take on it. So how do you see it Mr. Barkey?”
“I think it was a great idea. I was happy to go along with it to raise money. Besides I think she looks sensational with her head shaved. We're both looking forward to her keeping her head shaved.”
“You're Erica, right? Did you raise all that money by yourself?”
“I told all the kids that I was going to get my head shaved and gave them the paper that Mommy made for me. I kept talking to them and asking them when they were going to give some money for the kids who have cancer. I'm persisant. That's what my cousin Jennifer says.”
“You certainly must be. So what do you think of having your head shaved?”
“I love it. I wanted it shaved and I'm going to keep it shaved forever.”
After some more questions and some pictures, the interview was over and they went back into the gym to do their part to encourage the remainder of the shavees.
They were greeted by many people who wanted to congratulate them, encourage them or ask about the idea of keeping their heads shaved for more than a year. Eventually they were able to make their way out of the gym and head home.
“I hope you got some pictures Jennifer.”
“I took a bunch, but it was pretty dark in there. They could have used more lights. Most of the shots looked dark. Maybe you can make them better on the computer. I got a good one of you and Erica outside though. Here. Take a look.”
“That's very good Jennifer. Erica you look so sweet. I can't wait to see you with a nice smooth shaved head.”
“You look very good too Risa. I think you'll look terrific when you get it shaved smooth.”
“So do I. I'm feeling a little giddy about myself. Hurry up Thom so I can get this head the way it's supposed to be!” Risa laughed.
“You're getting as enthusiastic as Erica. You're going to have a terrific bald family. I'm absolutely delighted to have such a great family. And Danny is going to be the best looking boy in the whole school with his little head. You're going to be the envy of all the other kids, Danny,” Jennifer said as she gave his slightly bristly head a quick rub.
He grinned at her and rubbed his head. “It feels nice.”
“We're almost there. Maybe we should have a little snack before we get started. It may be a while before we can get a table at the restaurant.”
“You're probably right. I'll set out some things,” Risa said as they pulled into their driveway.
Soon they were all having chips and dips, cheese and crackers and various juices or hot tea.
“I hope you have some caps for the kids. They'll need them when they're waiting for the bus or being outside at school. It's still pretty cool in the mornings,” Jennifer said.
“We went to the store and got them last week. Erica, why don't you get your hats and model them for cousin Jennifer,” Risa said.
“OK.” Erica rushed off to get her new head gear and returned wearing a duckbill cap with embroidered birds on each side.
“This is my favorite. I think it looks great with my bald head,” Erica said.
“It looks very cool. You can wear that on a lot of occasions,” Jennifer said.
“I have a baseball cap too, but it's old. This is my sun hat,” Erica said as she replaced the cap with a light orange colored hat with a medium wide brim. “I'll have to wear it when we go to the beach or when I'm going to be in the sun a lot in the summer. That's what Mommy said. If I don't wear it I could get a bad sunburn and my head would hurt and look all red.”
“Be sure you don't forget. When you have a beautiful bald head you don't want to do anything bad to it,” Jennifer said.
“OK, I'll be careful.” Erica replaced the sun hat with a black, white and pink striped beanie that sported a white pompom on top.
“I can wear this one if it's not too cold. I like it too. Mom said I might need a warmer one on really cold days.”
“That look great with your bald head. I need to get some hats like yours.”
“Are you all ready to get proper smooth shaves. I'm going to put this away if nobody wants any more,” Risa said indicating the snacks that were on the table.
“Yea! I want to be first!” Erica exclaimed excitedly.
“I'll bring up another chair. Let's go gang!” Thom called.
In short order they were in the upstairs bathroom trying to get everyone squeezed in.
“This isn't going to work. I'll do Erica in the hall while you do Danny,” Risa suggested.
“That'll work. Here's a towel for Erica.”
With the kinks beginning to be worked out they began.
“This is going to feel a little cold on you head,” Risa said as she began to apply gel to Erica's head and spread it around.
“What does it look like? Can I see it?” Erica asked.
“Jennifer, get her that hand mirror from the bathroom. It's on the counter,” Risa said.
“Here you go Erica. You look just as funny as I did when I shaved,” Jennifer laughed.
Looking at herself Erica giggled. “It looks really funny with my head covered with white stuff.”
“Let me get started with this shaver. Any words of advise Jennifer?” Risa asked.
“Actually yes. You would catch on pretty quickly, but remember to shave against the grain because that gets it closer. And you do need to press a little firmly. Maybe not so much the first few times you shave her, but after a week or so you should be able to press quite firmly and get it very smooth. You can go over it a second time to if you want it extra smooth.”
“OK. Here goes,” Risa said as she pressed the shaver to Erica's temple and pushed it upward.
“Feel it and see if it's smooth.”
“It still feels a little rough. I'll go over it again. Oh, that's better. I think I getting the hang of it Erica. You're going to so nice and smooth when I'm done! How are you doing with Danny, Thom?”
“It's coming along nicely. I think I'll be able to get him quite smooth. These shavers seem to work very well.”
The shaving proceeded steadily. Risa had shaved the right side of Erica's head, then moved to the top of her head shaving from front to back, going over each trace twice. The left side followed.
“Put you head down so I can get the back,” Risa told her.
Erica dutifully put her chin on her chest as Risa shaved the back of her head. She went over it again where she noticed some foam still remaining on Erica's head.
“I'm eager to have you give me a silky smooth shave, Thom. I'm almost through with your shave Erica. I guess I should check it over and shave any spots that seem too rough.”
“You haven't done my eyebrows yet,” Erica reminded her.
“Oh pooh. I forgot. Close your eyes and I'll do them. Now I'll check it over and see if there are some spots I missed.”
“Did you miss any?” Erica asked after the inspection.
Well, I did miss a few spots. I'll have to redo them. I'll put on some more shaving gel. I think we're going to need to buy several cans of it Thom. There. Now I think you're done Erica.”
Risa's excitement was reflected by her nonstop chatting about what she was doing. Quite obviously she was already completely won over to the idea of being bald and would be encouraging Erica in particular to remain bald beyond the commitment they had all made. Given Erica's insistence on being shaved, little encouragement would be necessary at least for a few years.
“I'll get your head cleaned up and put on this special moisturizer. Then you can go admire yourself,” Risa laughed as she applied the moisturizer. “It feels so soft and smooth Erica, almost as good as Jennifer's. I guess it won't last very long though.”
“It will last for five or six hours once you do it really well. Besides their hair is still fairly fine and soft so probably it will last longer,” Jennifer told her.
“All done Erica. You look absolutely adorable, even angelic with your smooth bald head. I love it! I going to keep you like that as long as you want!”
“Thanks Mommy! I want to keep it shaved forever, just like Cousin Jennifer!” Erica said as she got up from the chair and felt her head. After a moment she turned to Risa, took a couple of steps and wrapped her arms around her Mother's waist.
“It feels really nice Mommy. Thank you for letting me get it shaved like this.”
“You're welcome sweetie. I'm going to love having such a beautiful bald daughter. I'll want to show her off to all my friends.”
“Hand me that bottle of moisturizer Risa. Danny is all done. Looks and feels very good too,” Thom said.
“Here. You're looking great Danny. You'll be the envy of all the boys in your class.” Risa told him.
Danny reached up to feel his smooth head. A big grin appeared on his face.
“Feel mine Danny,” Erica said as she felt Danny's head. “It feels so good!” Erica exclaimed before she headed back downstairs.
“I can hardly wait until you get me shaved smooth,” Thom.
“Well, looks like I'm ready. Why don't you have a seat here,” Thom said as Danny ran off to see what Erica was doing.
“I already love how I look as a bald woman. Now I just want to have a perfectly smooth head all the time. Would you be upset if I decided to have laser treatments like Jennifer had?”
“I wouldn't object at all. You do look quite wonderful as a sexy bald woman,” Thom answered as he began spreading shaving gel on her head.
“Don't be too hasty, Risa. Give it a few months at least. A year would be better. If after that you still love being bald and are completely comfortable with it, then go ahead.”
“Well, I'll try to be patient, but I don't think I'll change my mind. I've been looking forward to having it shaved ever since I talked to you that night you and Alex were driving back to the city.”
“I remember. I think you really caught the bug, but you should wait until you've gotten settled in the role of being a bald woman, so that it feels normal to you.”
“I can't argue with that. I'll let you know when I think I'm that stage. It's not going to be long, I'm sure.”
“Hold still will you,” Thom said laughing at she nodded and shook her head in her determination to get her point across.
“Oh, sorry. I got a little excited didn't I?”
Thom began shaving Risa's head starting at her forehead. He pressed the shaver firmly against her skin and moved it back several inches, then returned and went over it again. Continuing in that fashion he did the top of her head then began on the back.
“Put you head down so I can get to the back a little easier. That's good. I'm not pressing too hard am I?”
“No. It's fine. I just want it very smooth,” Risa said.
“I'll go over it twice. That should do it.”
“Don't be too enthusiastic the first few times. You don't want to get you scalp irritated and not be able to shave it,” Jennifer warned her.
“Did that ever happen to you?”
“No, but I was warned by my barber not to overdo it for a couple of weeks while my head and scalp adapted to being bald and shaved respectively.”
“OK, but I want it smooth for tonight. I'll take a chance this once.”
Thom continued his methodical traversal of her head with the shaver, finally finishing.
“This should make it about as smooth is it's likely to get,” he said as he applied the shaving gel to her head again.
“You're going to need a little makeup on it for a week or so until your own color develops. I suppose you don't have anything that might work.”
“I should have thought of that. Wait a minute! Maybe I do have something. I think I still have some suntan lotion that I bought last summer. It had something in it to make you look a little bit tanned.”
“That's just what you need. I did the same sort of thing the summer I got my first shave. It'll probably give you a little shine too.”
“I'll look for it right after I take care of Thom. What about Thom? And Erica and Danny too.”
“Well if Thom wants a little suntan, sure, but the kids are so fair they probably don't need any.”
Thom had been going over Risa's head for the second time and was now nearly finished. “I'm about done here. I like the way you're looking. I think I'm going to thoroughly enjoy having a bald wife. A little moisturizer and you're done.”
Thom leaned over and kissed her on the top of the head, then held the back of her head as he kissed her ardently. She returned the kiss with equal ardor.
“I'd better get started on you or we'll never get done,” Risa said as she disengaged and stood up to look at herself in the mirror and savor the soft smoothness of her head.
“I hope you're not to excited to give me a nice head shave,” Thom joked with her.
“Mister, you're going to get the best headshave you've ever had!”
“Well now. Let me try to remember the last time I had my head shaved. I'm having a little trouble here,” Thom laughed as he sat down.
“Whatever. That just guarantees it'll be your best head shave ever,” Risa laughed as she began spreading shaving gel on his head.
“I'm going to enjoy this and I'm especially going to enjoy you having a smooth head. I'm already imagining us holding each other's heads when we kiss. I'm going to be disappointed if you ever let it grow out again,” Thom said.
“Not very likely.”
Risa set to work to get Thom's head shaved smooth. She had gained some confidence with Erica's shave and now proceeded purposefully, applying considerable pressure to Thom's head as she removed the bristles that were present from the earlier clipper shave. As she went over his head, she could tell by the sound of the shaver that he would soon have a smooth head – one on which there would be only the faintest detectable feeling of bristles.
Jennifer had left to go downstairs to be with the kids and let Risa and Thom have a little privacy. She knew from her own experience that having your lover or husband shave your head could be a very erotic experience. She read the local newspaper as Erica and Danny sat watching a children's show. She noticed that Erica kept reaching up to rub her hand over her smooth head. She had had that experience herself after her first shave by Millie. Somehow the feeling was almost irresistible, at least for a few days.
Forty five minutes later Risa and Thom finally came down the stairs sporting very big grins.
“I love it, Jennifer! I think I look absolutely terrific. And I love how it feels too. I'm going to get crazy every time it grows out so that it feels bristly like it did before Thom shaved me. I don't think I'll ever be able to stand having hair on my head again! Or on Thom's either for that matter!” she laughed.
“You certainly look happy,” Jennifer teased them.
“Uh, well, we did have a couple of other things that came up sort of suddenly and took some time to take care of. I found that suntan lotion. I have some on now,” Risa said with a little snicker.
“I could tell. It looks quite natural. You do too Thom,” Jennifer replied.
“I guess we're ready to go if you are,” Thom said.
“I've got to call Aunt Alice. She said she would like us to visit tomorrow after we come back from the fellowship. Why don't you come with us Jennifer. It's just a fellowship meeting, with people talking about things they've done, people who are sick or need some help, things like that.”
“Sure. I'd be happy to go.”
“Good. I'll call her and you can talk to her also.”
Jennifer listened to Risa's side of the conversation getting the gist of what was being discussed. A few minutes later she handed the phone to Jennifer.
“She wants us all to come to their place for an early dinner. Here, you can talk to her.”
Hi Mom. How are you?”
“I'm just fine Jennifer. I hope you and the rest can come over tomorrow. We'll take you to the airport when you have to go.”
“I'd love that Mom. My flight leaves at seven thirty, so we'll have to be on our way about five thirty. Is that OK?”
“Of course. It will be fun to see all of you, although it's going to feel strange to see all of those bald heads.”
“I'm sure you'll get used to it quickly. The kids look just adorable and Erica is absolutely ecstatic about her bald head. Risa is pretty thrilled about hers too. I'll go with them to the fellowship meeting. We'll come straight over.”
“Good. Enjoy yourself at the fellowship. See you tomorrow.”
“I love you Mom. See you tomorrow. Bye.
“Bye.”
“Everybody who's bald should be in the car in two minutes,” Thom announced.
There was a sudden scramble as Danny, Erica and Jennifer raced to see who would be the first in the car. With some squealing and a great deal of laughing they were finally situated with Danny in the middle. Thom and Risa followed considerably more sedately. A short ride to the restaurant and they were all out and headed in still wearing their St. Baldrick's tee-shirts.
“They were greeted by a young woman who looked at them in total shock for a moment then recovered her wits.
“Table for five? It will be about fifteen minutes. Who is it for?”
“The Barkeys,” Thom answered
She paused then couldn't restrain herself.
“You're all shaved. What is St. Baldrick's?”
“They raise money for kids cancer research. We raised money by promising to get our heads shaved if they donated. And of course we have the fun of keeping our heads shaved,” Risa answered.
“How much did you raise?”
“A little over three thousand dollars ourselves, but we got another eighteen hundred during the auction at the event.”
“Did you say you were keeping you head shaved?”
“That's right. We'll all be bald for the next year and a half almost. It's a good way to publicize St. Baldrick's and get people to donate. And of course we're bald like the kids are who are on chemo and we can help make it so they don't feel so bad about not having hair. We got ours done this morning at the St. Baldrick's shavathon event over at the community college.”
“I like being bald. I going to stay bald and my brother is too,” Erica added.
“I think you look very good Ma'am. When is the next event?”
“I don't know, but you can look it up on the St. Baldrick's site. I think you can start one yourself if you get some sponsors.”
“When I have a chance I'd like to talk to you a little more. Your table should be ready in a few minutes,” the bemused greeter told them.
After taking their seats their waiter approached them to take their orders.
“I'm Shawna. I'll be your server tonight. And I seriously like your heads. Our greeter Amy told me what you did. I think that's a fabulous thing to do. Our manager has something in mind. Could you tell me your names?”
“Sure. I'm Thom, this is my beautiful bald wife Risa and these are my wonderful bald kids, Erica and Danny. And over there is my stunning cousin-in-law Jennifer. She's permanently bald already, but she was a great one woman cheering squad.”
“You're permanently bald?” Shawna asked Jennifer with bafflement in her voice.
“I'm bald by choice and I had it made permanent with laser treatments. Unfortunately that means that I couldn't participate with them except by making s donation and being a sponsor, and coming to cheer them on.”
“Oh! Wow!” She was speechless for a moment.
“I never imagined anyone doing something like that, but when I stop to think about it, I see how it might come about. A lot of women get laser treatments. It's pretty common isn't it? Well, I'd better take your orders and get back to our manager.”
A few minutes later she returned followed by her manager with their various beverages. Jennifer had ordered a bottle of dry white wine. The kids had apple juice.
“Hello. I'm Josh, the restaurant manager. I heard about what you have done from our greeter Amy. I'm very impressed and I wonder if you would mind if I made an announcement letting our guests know what you've done?”
“I don't know if that's a good idea. What do you think Risa?”
“We did interview with that reporter. It will probably be in the paper on Monday moring with our pictures.”
“That's true. Sure go ahead,” Thom told the manager.
“Thanks. I'll be sure we don't have a lot of people bothering you.”
“Can I take your orders now?” Shawna asked.
A few minutes after Shawna had left with their orders, the background music went quiet.”
“Good evening everyone. Thank you all for coming to the Herb Garden I apologize for interrupting, but I have an announcement that I think you will all appreciate. We have some very special guests tonight. Some of you have already seen them and probably wondered what their story was. Earlier today, the Barkey family, Thom, his wife Risa and their two children Erica and Danny attended the St. Baldricks cancer fundraiser. They were there to get their heads shaved to fulfill the vow they had made to their sponsors. Their sponsors pledged almost four thousand dollars to be applied to children's cancer research if they fulfilled their vow, which was to get their heads shaved, all four of them, and keep them shaved for the next year and a half – a week for each fifty dollars they raised. The are a remarkable family and generous to a fault. Let's hear it for the Barkey's!”
After a generous round of applause, the manager came back to their table.
“Thank you for what you did. My ten year old sister died of cancer when I was fifteen years old. It was quite a blow to the family. I thank you for your generosity and your dedication.”
“I'm not sure I deserve all the praise,” Risa said somewhat subdued.
“I agree with him Risa. You've done a wonderful thing even if you had a different motivation for it. It still counts, and people appreciate it,” Jennifer said.
“I didn't expect anything like that. I have mixed feelings. I'm proud that we raised the money, but I feel a little embarrassed that raising the money for cancer research was only incidental to my primary motive. It feels sort of like I don't really deserve the praise.”
“I understand, but even if it your motive wasn't absolutely pure, it accomplished something worthwhile, so don't feel ashamed, or put yourself down,” Jennifer replied.
'That's right Risa. I thought the goal of raising money for cancer was great, but even I would probably have gotten my head shaved in a couple of years anyway, so my motive wasn't pure.”
“I guess I can live with it. I realize that what we did was unusual and worthwhile even if it was a realization that came after the fact.”
A few minutes later Shawna, their server, arrived with their meals.
“Is there anything else I can get for your? OK. I'll be back later. If you need anything just let me know.”
Thirty minutes later, Shawna returned.
“Is there anything else I can get you” Dessert? Coffee?”
“I think I'd like a piece of your wonderful cheesecake and a cup of coffee,” Risa said.
“I remember the cheesecake from years ago. I'll have some and coffee too,” Jennifer echoed her.
“I guess you'd better make that three of each. What would you guys like?” Thom said to Erica and Danny.
Another cheese cake for Erica, some chocolate ice cream for Danny and hot chocolate completed their order.
“I'll be right back,” Shawna promised.
“Here you are. Josh said to tell you that the desert is on the house. Is there anything else I can do for you you?”
“That's very nice. Give him our thanks,” Risa said.
When their desserts were nearly done Shawna returned with their bill. Amy, the greeter, was with her.
“Could you tell me a little bit more about St. Baldrick's. Several of the other servers have said they'd be interested in doing it and Josh said he would be happy to sponsor anyone who was interested and that there would be no problem about them working here with a shaved head. I definitely want to do it,” Shawna said.
“Everyone likes Josh. He works really hard to make it a good place to work and listens to everybody. I want to do it too. It might be fun to be a bald greeter,” Amy laughed.
“My goodness. I think you could do something very interesting. The regular events occur close to St. Patrick's day, but you can set up and hold your own event anytime. You could even have it right here. You could give sponsor cards to everybody you serve and then invite them all back for the event. St. Baldrick's gives you a lot of leeway to do things like that. Look them up on the web and get started. They'll give you plenty of help and ideas. You could all wear St. Baldrick's tee shirts like this to advertise. Things like that,” Risa explained.
“You could pledge to keep your heads shaved for a month so that everyone who sponsored you could return to see you,” Jennifer added.
“That sounds like a great idea. I'll tell Josh. Maybe we can get something like that organized. Thanks for telling me about it and giving me all those good ideas. We're going to talk to Josh and see if we can get something organized. I'm sure we can.” Shawna said with obvious enthusiasm.
Shawna took Thom's credit card and along with Amy they hurried away to take care of the bill.
“I think you've started something Risa. And your idea seems to have landed on fertile ground too, Thom,” Jennifer said.
“You just may be right,” Thom said.
Shawna returned with Thom's credit card and the printout to sign which she handed to him. “I'm sure we're going to get something worked out. We may get most of the servers and a lot of the other people, even the cooks and our chef to join in. I think it could turn out to be a big success.”
“I'm sure you will. You have a lot of support and that's what counts,” Jennifer said.
“We'd better get back. The kids need to be going to bed pretty soon. We have a big day tomorrow,” Risa observed.
“Let's go gang,” Thom said to Erica and Danny who were engrossed in one of the games that the restaurant provided for the kids.
Back home with the kids safely tucked in bed they sat in the family room to enjoy a nice wine that Thom had opened for a little celebration.
“It's been quite a day,” Thom said.
“It certainly has. Let me offer a toast. Here's to the Barkeys. May they have many more happy days, weeks, months and even years as a wonderful bald family,” Jennifer said.
“Hear, hear,” Thom said.
“And here's to you Jennifer for inspiring Erica and me to want to be bald,” Risa said.
“And may we all enjoy our newfound family freedom from hairiness for many years to come,” Thom offered.
“May it be so,” Jennifer said, “but right now I think it's time for this person to seek a pillow on which to rest her bald head. Goodnight all.”
The next morning they all got up early to get ready to go to the fellowship meeting. Risa and Thom shaved themselves for the first time. Erica was even more enthusiastic and wanted to be shaved again too, a request to which Risa demurred.
“I can't shave you every day Erica. It might irritate your skin. After a month or so we might try it a few day to see if your skin had gotten used to the shaver,” Risa told her.
“OK, but I want it to be really smooth all the time. I don't like it to feel like this,” Erica said.
“I know how you feel, but you'll just have to be patient for a few years,” Risa told her.
They were a big hit at the fellowship meeting. Most of the people present already knew what they had planned and some were sponsors. Still it created somewhat of a sensation for the four of them to arrive with their bald heads. And of course Jennifer added to it with her own baldness.
Erica's enthusiasm was contagious as was obvious from what she said afterwards.
“The kids really like my bald head. They thought it was very cool. Millie said she wished she could get her hair shaved like that. Dana said the same thing. They all liked to feel it too. It's a lot of fun to have a bald head.”
“I think it's fun too, but none of my friends have said they want to get shaved yet. Maybe they will later,” Risa said laughing.
“Maybe we'd better head on over to see Aunt Alice and Uncle Ray?” Thom interrupted.
“OK, let's get going” Risa agreed.
In short order they arrived to be greeted at the door by Alice and Ray.
“Hi, Aunt Alice. Doesn't I look cool with my hair shaved off. You can feel it if you want to.” Erica said as she rushed up to give Alice a hug.
“Well you do look quite sweet and innocent. It's very becoming. What did your friends at the fellowship have to say?” Alice asked.
“They liked it. Some of them wanted to get their hair shaved too.”
“Danny you look very nice with your bald head. You have a very good looking head too,” Ray told him.
“Well, Uncle Ray, what do you think of my new head style?” Risa asked.
“I'm very impressed. You look a lot younger. I think it suits you very well. It give you an attractive open look,” Ray said.
“Thanks Uncle Ray. Our friends at the fellowship took it in stride and I got quite a few compliments. Of course I'm never going to look as beautiful and elegant as Jennifer, but I'm feeling very good about keeping it shaved. I know I look good and it feels right – it's exactly what I want. I think I'll keep it shaved. I have no plans to let it grow again,” Risa said addressing both Ray and Alice.
“I don't think I'm going to miss seeing you with hair Risa. It's strange, but already it's beginning to seem quite charming and natural for you to be bald.”
“That's very nice Aunt Alice. It makes me feel really good to know that you approve. We're going to be bald for the next year and a half almost and Thom and I will almost certainly stay bald after that. I don't think I could stand to have hair any more. I'll probably follow Jennifer's example and make it permanent in a year or so.”
“I'm not surprised. Once the idea got into your head you couldn't let it go until you had found a way to get your head shaved and keep it shaved. So do what makes you happy and satisfied. Besides I think you look even better now than you did when you had hair. And Erica looks like the sweetest cherub too, but I hope you're not going to make her permanently bald any time soon,” Alice said.
“Oh, no, Aunt Alice. I wouldn't do anything like that, but you know how persistent she can be. I'll put my foot down if she gets too insistent, but if she still wants it when she get thirteen or fourteen I might give in,” Risa responded.
“I suppose that makes sense. By then she'll have been bald for three or four years and might have a boyfriend. That would make a difference I think,” Alice replied.
“I'm sorry Jennifer. I got so engrossed with Risa and her kids that I neglected you. Give me a big hug. My, you look quite lovely and elegant with your bald head. I don't know why I couldn't appreciate it before. Now I do. I'm quite proud to say that I have a beautiful bald daughter.”
“You're a very understanding and wonderful Mom. I love you very much. It must be a shock to see almost all of your family bald. I'm so glad you're able to understand that we feel good about ourselves because we're bald. I think Risa looks just wonderful. And Erica is an absolute doll.”
“Of course I agree. The minute I saw her, I knew that I was going to be won over instantly. She's so happy about it that it'll probably rubs off on her friends.”
That's right. She has such a positive attitude and is so enthusiastic that it's bound to influence some of the other girls. Who knows. Maybe a year from now she'll have several bald girlfriends. I know I'm very happy to have bald friends like Risa and Julie.”
“Come on and help me put things on the table. I know just where your old apron is. You can wear that so you won't soil your clothes. I really love having you in the kitchen with me. The more I see you the more I appreciate how lovely you are with your head so smooth and shiny. I'm going to need some new pictures of your and of you and Alex. I hope you have a good photographer for the wedding – someone who knows how to show off all those shiny bald heads in the best light,” Alice laughed.
“We will. We'll make it a beautiful wedding not only for us, but for our wonderful parents. You'll see,” Jennifer said as she gave her a hug and put on her apron from ten years earlier.
It was the most joyous family dinner Jennifer could remember. Erica's enthusiasm was contagious and even Alice was drawn in. At one point she told Erica that when she grew up she would be a bald woman as beautiful as her Mom or Jennifer.
Postscript
That evening after checking in at the airport and going through security Jennifer's was sitting in the boarding area skimming through a newspaper that someone had abandoned earlier. Her mind was not really taking in what she was reading rather it was still dancing to the feeling that came from knowing how much her family supported and appreciated her. Her cell phone rang, but it seemed like a distant distraction. Finally, after several rings, she came back to the present and answered it.
“Oh, Alex! Hi! We had a wonderful time. Risa loves her bald head and Erica is estatic. They'll stay shaved for almost a year and a half. I think Risa and Thom may stay bald. I'm going on too long. What did you call about?
Alex laughed. “Why to find out how things went with you of course. I'm really glad everything worked out and your Mom didn't get upset.”
“Not only did she not get upset, she was won over by Erica who is the most adorable bald cherub you've ever seen. And Danny is just as cute as can be.”
“I can believe it. I have some amazing news for you too. I went to Jackie's St. Baldrick's event. You won't believe what happened. She raised an amazing amount of money from some big donor.”
“She did? Oh, wait. They just called me to the counter and they've started loading the plane. There're only about twenty five passengers. I have to go. I'll talk to you later. Tell me everything when I get back. Love you, Bye.”
“OK. Bye.”
