MEG AND HER FRIENDS

This story had it origins in the exchanges between the real life Meg and others on the website http://www.epinions.com/review/pr-Oster ... 0242699908    (thanks to jumbuck) where Meg extols the Oster 76 clipper fitted with a #00000 cutting head.  She is an enthusiastic believer in keeping her two boys shaved bald and strongly urges every Mother of boys to follow her example.  Apparently many have, including a Mother of three boys who has become as enthusiastic about the bald haircut for boys as Meg and, like Meg, has become the kitchen barber in her neighbor.  Meg says she has been shaving the heads of all the boys in the neighborhood.  She also discusses her  own short bouffant hairstyle and the use of the clipper to shave her nape up high above her natural hairline and how much she likes it.  Meg's daughter is modeled on what she says about her real daughter.  All the other characters are entirely fictional.

Thursday Afternoon, Late April

“Hi, Meg.  It's Aggie.  How are you?"

“Fine.  I was just thinking I should call you to see if you wanted to bring Mark over for a shave on Saturday.  I'll be doing my guys then," Meg answered.

“Actually that was what I was calling about.  I just talked to Kate and we wanted to bring the kids over if you were going to be available," Meg responded.

“Sure.  Bring them over.  Are they getting real shaves this time.  Mark got the not quite shaved look the last time," Meg asked.

“Actually they're all very enthusiastic about being bald now.  Tim will definitely be joining Mark even though he's only six.  Did you get that other attachment that you said would give an even closer shave?"

“It came a couple of days ago.  I've checked it out and it fits the Oster perfectly.  That's what I'll be using," Meg informed her.

“Good.  The smoother the better.  They'll all look super good with smooth heads.  I'm eager to see them get it done.  I expect to keep them shaved from now on.  I'm going to get one of those wet or dry shavers so I can shave them every other day or so." Aggie said.

“That sounds like a good idea if you want to keep them smooth shaved.  You must have become a real convert if you're willing to keep them smooth.  Personally I don't want to be bothered with the extra work, so I just shave them once a week.  Of course if they want it smooth I just lather them up with shaving cream and shave their heads with a razor. I did that quite a few times last  summer."

“I think it's worth the extra time.  Maybe I'll change my mind after a while, but I think they look super good when they're freshly shaved.  I don't like to see that shadow that shows up after a couple of days."

“Well, that's your choice.  Just bring them over about ten and I'll have them done in a jiffy."

“Thanks Meg.  You've really given us a great model for the kids.  As you say it's the ideal head style for them.  We'll be there."

A few minutes later Aggie was on the phone with Kate.

“Hi Kate it me, Aggie.  I just got off the phone with Meg.  We're all set for tomorrow at ten."

“Thanks Aggie.  Bart has become a true believer.  The girls at his school think he looks very 'cool.'  He's looking forward to getting it shaved again."

“Mark had the same experience at school.  And Ellie really likes it too.  She keeps wanting to rub his head.  She even said that she wished she was a boy so she could get her head shaved.  I'm going to keep both of them shaved smooth.  I want to buy one of those wet or dry shavers and shave them smooth every day.  I really come to like the look of a nice smooth and shiny head."

“That's a very good idea.  Maybe I should do something like that.  My two girls are even more enthusiastic about their brother's bald head than Ellie.  Diane told him that he look's super good with his head shaved and that he should keep it shaved.  Wendy liked it so much that she said she wanted her own head shaved.  Diane told her that she would look very cute with her head shaved and even went so far as to say that maybe she would get her own head shaved."

“What in the world!  What did you say to that?"

“I just ignored it, but it did put the thought in my head.  They both fuss a lot about their hair – how it's such a bother and never looks right.  If they bring it up again I might just get them both shaved smooth and keep it like that for the duration," Kate laughed."

There was a long silence.

“Aggie are you there?"

“I'm here.  I was just having the craziest thought.  Something clicked in my head and I imagined taking Ellie and the two boys over to Meg's and getting them all shaved.  I could see them in my mind's eye and I was complimenting Ellie, telling her that she looked just wonderful."

“Oh my God!  You're right.  They would look wonderful.  Maybe we should take them to Meg's on Saturday.  What do you think?"

“It would be a pretty crazy thing to do.  Girls and women don't get their heads shaved.  Still, I can't get the idea out of my head.  I think I'll talk to Elli.  I'll do it if she says she really wants it."

“Good idea.  I'll do the same with Diane and Wendy.  I'm betting that they will decide to do it.  Apparently they've talked with some of their friends who have expressed the idea that girls should be able to get their heads shaved just like guys."

“Let discuss it again tonight after we've talked it over with the girls."

“OK.  I'll call you.  Bye"

“Bye."

Aggie put the phone down slowly, her mind a jumble of thoughts.  How would she approach the subject with Ellie?  How would Ellie react?  The more she thought about it the more she wanted to do it even if Ellie wasn't completely sold on the idea. Yes,she thought. I'm going to see that she gets her head shaved and I'm going to keep it shaved for her.  Maybe I can take her shopping and bring up the subject that way.  She's been saying she needed some new clothes, and I need to get one of those wet or dry shavers so I can keep all three of them smooth and shiny.  When she get home I'll take her to the mall with me.  I'd better get something fixed for dinner that I can reheat quickly,  Aggie told herself.

A few minutes later she was industriously engaged in preparing a dinner whose components could be either reheated in the microwave, or cooked in the microwave in a few minutes.  Well before Ellie arrived home she had her meal prepared except for the marinated halibut that she would be able to cook in the microwave in a few minutes and then top with the pineapple mango salsa that she had prepared.

Later she called to several places to be sure she could go directly to a store that had the shaver that she had read about.  She was lucky.  The department store where she intended to take Ellie carried it and had several in stock.

When Ellie arrived at about three thirty, Aggie greeted her as she came in through the back door.

“Hi, Ellie.  How was school today?"

“OK..  We played dodge ball.  That was fun."

“Good.  I'm going to the mall and I thought we could go to Tracy's to get you a few things."

“Really?  That's great!"

“Put your things in your room and I'll get the car out of the garage."

They were on their way and had stopped at a traffic signal when Aggie brought up the subject that was preying on her mind.

“What were you thinking when you told Mark that you wished you were a boy so you could get your head shaved like his."

“Huh?  I don't know.  I thought he looked so cool and it felt so wild I just wanted to be able to do it myself."

“You said that some of the other girls were talking about it too.  What are they saying?"

“A lot of them think that having a bald head would be very cool.  There are some singers that have shaved heads and kids like them.  Wendy said that she's going to get her head shaved, but nobody believes her."

“If you could would you like to get your head shaved?"

“Could I do that?" Ellie said – her voice registering incredulity.

“I think you would look incredibly cute and sweet with your head shaved."

“You do?" Ellie said in complete astonishment.

“Yes I do.  I'd like for you to have your head shaved.  You would be adorable."

“I think I'd like to, but it's scary."

“Do you think kids would make fun of you?"

“I don't know.  Maybe."

“What if there were some other bald girls in your school?"

“That would be great.  Who would it be?  Do you know?"

“I think so, but I'd better not say anything until I'm sure."

“When would I get it shaved?"

“Saturday."

“Oh!"

“Let's go buy you a few things that you need.  Then we can talk a little more about it."

Ellie picked out a few thing, most of which Aggie approved.  When they were done, Aggie noted that Ellie was very pleased.

“We have to go upstairs to get what I need," Aggie told her as they headed toward the escalator.

A brisk walk down the main corridor of the store brought them to the personal grooming section where Aggie purchased the shaver and some shaving gel recommended by the sales clerk.

“Mom, don't you always shave your legs with a regular razor?"

“It's not for me.  I'm going to shave all of you so that you stay nice and smooth, even better than Mark was when he gets his head freshly shaved by Ms. Wilcox.  I really like the idea of keeping you baby smooth and soft."

“That's weird Mom."

“Maybe it is, but Mark's bald head looks extremely good and I'm sure you and Timmy will look just as good, especially if your heads are very smooth and shiny.  Don't you think that would look good?"

“I guess so," Ellie said tentatively.

“We'd better get back to the house.  I have a nice dinner ready.  I want to get it on the table on time.  You don't need to say anything to your Father about getting your head shaved.  It's our little secret and surprise."

“OK."

With dinner over, the kids in their rooms studying, and Lance reading the newspaper in the family room, Aggie waited for Kate's call.  After waiting as long as she could doing unnecessary cleaning she decided to go up to their bedroom.

“Lance, I'm going up.  I have some clothes sorting to do."  She had promised to give away a lot of her wardrobe that she no longer had any use for or which was outdated and she didn't intend to wear it again.  “If Kate calls that's where I'll be."

“K," Lance grunted, completely engrossed in whatever he was reading.

Aggie actually made a little progress at getting rid of clothes that she no longer wanted, almost filling a large trash bag before the phone rang.  She went back into the bedroom from the walk-in closet and picked it up and answered.

“Hello Kate.  Just a minute."

She walked the few steps to the stairs and went down about half way where she could see Lance still absorbed in his newspaper, then went back to the bedroom.

“I'm back.  How did things go with your kids?"

“Pretty amazing actually.  Wendy was enthusiastic, but she wanted Diane to join her.  It didn't take much.  Diane's favorite singer keeps her head shaved most of the time.  How about you?"

“I had to use some persuasion.  Ellie actually wants to do it, but she's a little apprehensive about it.  Once it's done and she get some positive feedback she'll be fine, especially if Wendy does it too.  I'm very enthusiastic about it.  I know she'll be just darling with her head shaved."

“Do you think that Lance is going to be OK with it.  I've noticed that he often comments about some actress's long hair.  Hasn't he wanted you to let you hair grow?"

“He has, but I made it clear that there was no way I was going to try to look like some pampered Hollywood sex kitten and spend hours every day wasting time with that kind of long hair.  Besides that I would feel and look like an idiot with hair like that.  He might be upset if Ellie shaves her head, but I think I can deal with it."

“I hope it doesn't turn into a problem.  Chase is pretty blasé about it apparently.  Wendy told him she was going to get her head shaved and he hardly blinked an eye.  When he asked her why she would do that, she answered that she didn't like her hair and she thought she would look very cool with it shaved.  He just laughed and said 'OK.'  So we're taking them all over to Meg's on Saturday, right?"

“Right.  I bought my wet or dry shaver this afternoon, so I'm all set to keep then clean shaved.  I'm looking forward to it."

“So am I.  The more I think about it, the more I like the idea.  Like you said they'll look very sweet."

________

“Come on guys let's go.  There might be a long line," Aggie said laughing as she hustled them into her car.

Lance was already at work on some project in his electronic workshop in one corner of the basement.  He approved of Mark's bald head and had no objection to Timmy getting his head shaved as well.  He saw nothing amiss with Ellie going with them particularly in light of the fact that Ellie had been very vocal about her fascination with her big brother's bald head.  He had even laughed at her statement that she would like to be a boy so she could get her own head shaved.

They parked in Meg's driveway with Kate's car pulling in behind them as they tumbled out.  Aggie waited for Kate and the boys kidded around together as they headed around to the back where they could troupe in though the back hall to the kitchen where Meg had set up shop.

The three girls quickly coalesced and confirmed that they were all getting their heads shaved by Meg.  A few shrieks accompanied their various statements to each other.

“Try to keep control.  This is a surprise.  You want to be pretty nonchalant about it," Kate told them.  OK?"

The shrieks subsided, but the talking and giggling continued until they arrive at the door and walked into the kitchen where they were greeted by Meg.

“Hi girls.  Come to see the guys get cleaned up and feel their bald heads?"

“Yeah!  Being bald is very cool.  I like it," Diane said.

“Me too," Wendy and Ellie said almost in unison.

“OK.  I just finished my guys,  so whose next?"

With no hesitation at all Wendy sat down in the waiting chair.  “Me, I'm next."

“Very funny Wendy.  That a good joke.  So who's really next?" Meg asked.

“It's really me Ms. Wilcox.  Mom said I could," Wendy said determinedly.

“You're joking aren't you," Meg said, a little taken aback.

“No!  I'm not joking.  I want to have my head shaved just like Bart," Wendy insisted.

“What's this all about Kate?  You're don't expect me to shave her head," Meg said.

“Actually I do.  She wants it and I think she'll be adorable with her head shaved.  You should do it for her.  Otherwise I'll have to buy a clipper like yours and do it myself," Kate responded.

“That's crazy Kate.  Girls don't get their heads shaved," Meg replied.

“Of course they do Meg.  There are several singers who have shaved heads.  I know a couple of dancers that keep their heads shaved too along with several models.  And some women do it just because they like how it looks.  Girls should have the freedom to do it so they look cool and don't have to fuss with their hair just like the guys.  I think you should go with the flow Meg.  Wendy will definitely appreciate it," Kate said.

“This is crazy," Meg repeated.  “What about the rest of you?  Are you getting your heads' shaved too?" Meg asked.

“I am," Diane said without hesitation.

“So am I," Ellie echoed her.

“And you approve of that I suppose," Meg said to Aggie.

“Of course I do Meg.  I want them all shaved nice and smooth with a good shine.  It's the perfect haircut for them for the rest of spring and the summer and maybe for school next fall too," Aggie agreed,

“Well, if this isn't the most ridiculous thing I've ever heard of," Meg sputtered.

“Just go ahead and do it Meg.  It's not the end of the world as we know it.  If they don't like it it'll grow back," Kate chastened her.

“All right, I'll do it even though I think you and Aggie are out of your minds," Meg said with some heat.

“A lot of the girls at school think it would be cool to have their heads shaved," the eleven year old Wendy said to her.

“Well I guess you're going to be the first," Meg said as she wrapped her cape around Wendy's neck and fastened it.  She grabbed her clipper and turned it on.  “Speak now or forever hold your peace."

Wendy grinned up at Meg waiting expectantly as Meg moved the clipper close to her forehead.  When no one said anything she put it on Wendy's forehead and pushed it firmly from front to back.  Only then was the silence broken.

“Way to go Wendy," Diane said.

“Way cool," Bart told his younger sister as Meg made a second pass.

“That is so neat Wendy.  You're going to look super.  I can't wait to get mine done," Ellie said.

“You're going to look so sweet with a smooth and shiny head.  I love it already," Kate said with considerable enthusiasm.

By now Meg's ire at the idea that she was expected to shave the heads of these three girls had grown and she wanted to get through it as quickly as possible.  Two more passes over the top of Wendy's head were followed by a rapid attack on the right side where a few quick passes removed most of the hair above her ears.  The chin length strand coming down in front of her ear was removed and Meg's manic attack continued in the back where her clipper raced upward raining hair on the floor.  Here and there strands remained, unnoticed by Meg who continued her hectic pace on the left side.  Barely a minute had passed, but her indignation was beginning to cool down.

“Meg, you don't have to be so angry about it.  You could have refused to do it you know.  We would have understood,"  Kate said quietly, trying to mollify her.

Meg stopped for a moment.  “I suppose I should have, but I didn't.  I guess I'm not as opposed to them being shaved as I thought I was.  I'm calmed down now.  I still think it's outrageous though."

Meg continued her traversal of Wendy's head with her clipper at a much more controlled pace.  She went over Wendy's nearly bald head again, ridding it of any stray strands and making sure that it was uniformly clipper shaved.

“Put your head way down Wendy," Meg said as she held the cape down with one hand while she clipped a few hairs on Wendy's neck.

“You look just wonderful Wendy," Aggie said, as the grinning Wendy walked toward her rubbing her hand over her head.

“It feels really nice.  I can barely feel anything," Wendy said.

“I think you look absolutely adorable sweetheart," Kate told her as she gave her a hug.

“Thanks Mom.  I like the way it feels.  I wish I could see how it looks."

“There's a big mirror in the bathroom right around the corner," Meg offered.  “All right who's next?"

“Go ahead Bart," Kate said.

Bart promptly occupied the kitchen chair that Meg used in lieu of a barber chair.

“So you're finding that having a nice bald head is not so bad," Meg teased him.

“It's pretty good.  I've gotten used to it and it's convenient.  The girls seem to like it too," The sixteen year old Bart replied.

“Well, it will be a little better this time, now that I have this balding head for my Oster.  It certainly did the job on Wendy don't you think?" Meg joked as she began running the clipper over Bart's head, reducing the eighth inch long stubble that he now sported to near invisibility.

“She looks very cool with it shaved.  I wouldn't mind if I could keep mine like this all the time," Bart answered.

“Well maybe we will.  I sort of like the idea too.  If we go that route you're going to have to do your own head most of the time.  You should be able to do it pretty quickly in the shower," Kate told him.

Wendy had returned from examining her self in the bathroom mirror and was watching Bart's shaving when Kate made her remark.

“Mom.  I really like how I look.  It's so neat.  And it feels great.  Can I keep mine shaved smooth all the time like Bart?"

“I guess I've started something here.  My rule is that everyone get the same treatment.  No one gets special privileges.  So if Bart keeps his head shaved, then you get to do it too," Kate reassured her.

“That's great Mom.  I think I want to be shaved like that too.  I don't want it to get bristly," Diane said, as she quickly picked up on the idea of, not only getting her head shaved, but also the even more radical idea of keeping it shaved smooth.

Kate smiled.  “Of course Diane.  I think having a nice smooth head would be absolutely the ideal haircut for you."

Meg had almost finished shaving Bart's head and  was just going over it in a few places that she thought she might not have been done to her satisfaction.  Finally she removed the cape from around him neck.

“All right.  Which of you crazy girls is next.  I think you're all nuts, but I suppose, as the old saying goes, what's sauce for the gander is sauce for the geese too,"  Meg said.

“Go ahead Ellie.  It's your turn," Aggie said.

“OK." Ellie said as she moved briskly to the chair and sat down.  Of the three girls she had the longest hair – a little longer than shoulder length which she usually kept pulled back in a pony tail with an elastic band around it.

“So you want me to cut off all this nice hair and make you bald as an egg?  Is that right?"

Ellie was momentarily taken aback by this comment.  The kitchen had suddenly become silent.  A palpable tension seemed to fill the air as they all waited for Ellie's response.

“Uh," she got out as she looked at Aggie who remained impassive except for a little smile.  Her eyes wandered toward Bart and then settled on Wendy who gave her a little secret smile and a slight nod.

Ellie took a deep breath.  “Yes Ma'am.  I want you to cut off my hair and shave my head just like you did Wendy's – please," she added as an afterthought.

“Humph."  Meg responded expressing her disapproval.  Nevertheless she covered Ellie with the cape which she fastened snugly around her neck.

“I suppose I'll just have to cut off this pony tail with my clipper," she said as she made a decision about how to proceed.

The powerful motor driven clipper had no problem working its way through the moderately thick ponytail and it was soon severed and lying on the table with the elastic band holding it together.

Ellie sniffled once, but then smiled as she saw her brother Mark give her a thumbs up and a quick smile.  The room remained quiet, waiting for the first traverse of the clipper over Ellie's head.  It happened without any fanfare as Meg turned on the big clipper and unceremoniously ran it over Ellie's head from above her right eye to the crown of her head.  Instantly there was a clamor of voices making comments – positive comments.

“You're going to look so sweet," Aggie said.

“Right on sis," from Mark.

“You're going to love it!" from Wendy.

“Pretty cool," from Bart.

“It's going to look great!" from Kate.

From then on the chatter continued at a low key as Kate and Aggie talked quietly about keeping their kids smoothly shaved, the kids talked about whatever kids usually talk about.  Only Diane, the oldest of the girls by three years remained quiet.

Meg's powerful clipper had made quick work of Ellie's hair and only a moment or two of cleanup remained.

“There you go Ellie.  For the life of me I don't know what's come over you girls.  How am I supposed to tell the boys from the girls if you all have shaved heads?" Meg asked.  “I suppose you have to wear a sign or something."

“I think I'll wear my big hoops.  None of the guys wear earrings like that," Diane finally spoke up.

“Humph," Meg said once again.  “All right who's next?"

“I guess it me," Mark volunteered as he got up to sit in the chair.

“I take it you want this all off?" Meg asked, referring to the nearly quarter of an inch of hair that he had grown since his last clippering.

“Yep.  All off.  I going to keep it smooth from now on," Mark insisted.

“Well, that's probably for the best.  Too bad there isn't some kind of cream or lotion that you can put on that will take care of it once and for all," Meg responded as she finished putting the cape around him and fastening it about his neck.

Mark's head was soon buzzed clean, as near to being shaved as made no difference.  Meg went over it once again as she did routinely, clipped his neck underneath the cape, unfastened the cape shaking it onto the floor and declared him done.

“Thanks, Ms. Wilcox.  It feels great!" Mark said as he stood up.

“You're welcome Mark.  You do look quite handsome with a nice bald head.  Now that summer is upon us, I have been shaving so many heads. I don't think there is a boy with hair left in our neighborhood!  You may have been  the last one to go completely bald." Meg replied.

“You're right Meg.  I'm really glad you introduced us to the idea of the kids having their heads shaved.  They look so much better that way than with all that unruly hair on their heads.  They waste entirely too much time fooling with it.  If there were a lotion like you described I think I'd be out getting some right now to use on them," Kate declared.

“All of them, I suppose," Meg said a little grumpily.

“Of course.  I might, no, I'm sure I would use it on myself too," Kate said.  “I saw an ad for an automobile on TV last week that was kind of funny.  At one point, this family was buying a new car and someone said something like I love what you've done with your hair to the womanShe and her husband were bald as well as their two kids.  It struck me that she looked quite good with her bald head.  I'm looking forward to the time when being a bald woman is a serious trend."

“Good grief Kate!  You're really off the deep end here." Meg said.

“I don't think so Meg.  They do it in a lot of places around the world.  Why not here?  What's the harm?  It's easy, simple and it can look as good as having a lot of hair.  I have no doubts on that score.  It's just that we're stuck in the old fashioned idea that women have to have a lot of hair hanging down the back of their heads or piled up in some ridiculous bird's nest arrangement.  I think it's your turn Diane," Kate said, giving everyone a little shock at her sudden change of subject.

Once again Kate had inadvertently struck a chord in Aggie.  For the first time the thought of being bald herself lodged in her mind.  She pictured herself as bald and the idea took root.  She didn't remember it, but the seed had been planted when she was a teenager, but she had suppressed it.

Meg looked skyward at Kate's statement, but decided to let it go.  Diane had instantly gotten up and seated herself in the chair in the middle of the floor.  Meg capped her and wasted no time getting started on clippering her head to bareness.

“I'll be happy when I'm rid of this mop," Diane exclaimed.

Mark, who was in several of Diane's classes looked at her and grinned.  She grinned back at him clearly enjoying the sensation of the clipper on her head.

“You're going to look neat Diane," Mark told her.

“You'll look even better when you get a smooth shave," she retorted.

Meg ignored the by-play and concentrated on getting Diane's head clippered as close as she could.  As it had with all the others it took only a few few minutes to rid Diane of her 'mop.'

“I guess that takes care of your 'mop' Diane.  I hope you're happy now."

“I am, Ms. Wilcox.  Thank you very much.  I'm going to keep it shaved smooth too," she added with conviction.  “I'm positive that will look extra good.  I don't want to have anything but a nice smooth head."

“Well, it beats me why all of you want to be bald, but each to his or her own I always say.  It looks like it's your turn Timmy.  You'll have to sit of this telephone book," Meg said.

“I don't need any help.  I can do it myself," Timmy said as he scrambled up onto the chair and sat on the telephone book avoiding any help from Meg.

“I guess you can at that," Meg said with a little chuckle as she covered him with the cape.

Timmy's hair quickly succumbed to Meg's clipper.  In less than two minutes he had a bare head.  He light brown hair was essentially invisible. so he looked almost perfectly bald.

“Wow, Timmy that looks super good," Ellie told him

“I like it Timmy.  A nice bald head is exactly right for you," Aggie said.

Timmy grinned as he clambered down from the chair.  He had insisted that he get his head shaved like his big brother and Aggie had been more than willing to accommodate him.

“Thanks Meg.  You did a great job on all of them," Aggie said.

“Mom, I really like the way I look.  I'm going to keep it shaved," Ellie said.

“You look just darling, sweet as apple pie.  I definitely want you to keep it shaved, don't worry about that," Aggie expressed her desire for Ellie to remain bald.

“Where's Lucie Ms. Wilcox?  I thought she'd be here," Wendy said.

“Thanks for reminding me.  She's in her room.  I need to get her clipped too.  I shave her neck every week so it stays neat.  Like mine is except I don't do hers as high," Meg said as she went to the intercom and called Lucie who appeared a moment later.  Her mouth dropped open as she saw the three bald girls.

“Oh my gosh.  You guys got your heads shaved!  Why did you do that?" Lucie said in astonishment.

“We all just wanted to do it.  I think it look really good,"  Wendy said.  “When did you get your hair permed like that?  You always had it in a  short wedge."

“Mom did it two weeks ago when we had that big heat wave.  I told her I wanted it short."

“That heat and humidity really inspired her I guess.  I gave her a very tight perm on the top and then used a #3 blade on the Oster to remove the majority of her hair on the back and sides. I then switched to the 00000 blade to trim up and around her ears and to shave her neckline nice and high," Meg explained to her audience.  “She likes it.  It's cool and low maintenance.  I think we'll keep it that way for the duration."

“Just don't expect me to shave you like Diane.  I'm just going to clean up the back and sides.  Sit down and let me get this cape on you," Meg said.  “Maybe I should go a little shorter on the sides and back," Meg said as she snapped a #2 guide onto her Oster.

Without consulting Lucie she quickly started using it to trim the sides of Lucie's head, cutting the the hair all around to only a quarter of an inch all the way up nearly two inches to the arch of her head and evenly around the back, leaving Lucie with a little cap of short tight curls.

“I going to take it up a little higher in back too.  That will look nice and help keep you cool," Meg said.

“I like it shaved up in the back.  It feels so nice when it's done.  Can you shave it all around?" Lucie asked.

“You want to have it shaved above your ears all the way around?" Meg asked.

“Just a little bit – maybe an inch."

Meg looked at her.  “You sure about this?"

“Yes.  I think it would be cool.  I'd like it like that please," Lucie said.

“Humph.  OK, I'll do it.  Just don't complain if you don't like it," Meg told her as she removed the #2 guide leaving the clipper  with the bare #00000 head.  As was her normal way of doing things she didn't hesitate and beginning in front of Lucie ear shaved up about halfway to where the curly hair started.  She proceeded quickly and with surprising precision around Lucie's head to the other side and the temple area, then stepped back to examine the result.

“I don't like the way that looks Lucie.  The little part of short hair below the curls doesn't seem to fit.  It just doesn't look right."

“Can you do something to make it look right?"

“I guess I could.  I just told you I wasn't going to shave your head, but now it looks like I'll have to shave it up to your curls if it's going to look right."

“OK.  I don't mind.  It will be neat and cooler too," Lucie.

“The things I let you girls talk me into," the exasperated Meg said.  “I guess you'll want me to lather you up and shave it smooth too."

“That would be nice Mom.  I'd really like having it shaved smooth like yours."

Meg concentrated on completing the shaved sides and back using her Oster 76 clipper.  It took only a short time.

“It's done.  I'll do the razor shaving after dinner," Meg told her.

“OK.  I want to see how it looks," Lucie said as she left to look at herself in the mirror.

“You keep your hairline shaved pretty high Meg.  When did you start doing that?" Kate laughed looking at Meg's froth of white blond hair.

Meg“Let me think.  It sort of started in  ninety nine or two thousand.  It was a big bouffant back then, and the back was a lot longer.  I just kept getting it cut short over time.  All the length in the back is completely gone now. In fact, I so love having my neck free of hair that I have my neckline shaved quite high.  If you look at me from behind, my neckline goes up almost to the top of my ears. Don't knock it till you've tried it--it feels WONDERFUL, especially when it's shaved smooth with a razor.  The sides used to be longer too.  Now the sides are cut so that most of my ears show. The length and volume of the bouffant are on the top. I had about seven inches of height on the top just a few years ago. Now it's between four and five inches high. We're such a short-hair family that it just feels natural to have it so short.  I guess I can't complain if Lucie wants hers shaved up high all around," Meg said in a somewhat resigned voice.

“I think she looks quite adorable with that little cap of curls and the rest shaved.  With it smoothly shaved she'll look even better," Aggie said in support of Lucie.

“I like your high shaved nape Meg.  I did the same thing several years ago.  I never liked the way my hairline was so uneven so I had Claire shave it into the shape I have now.  It had to be shaved up pretty high to get it like that, not as high as yours though, just up a half inch at the middle point and curved up to the middle of my ears.  Anyway, it always grew out pretty quickly so I'd lose the shape after a week and I wasn't happy about that.  I mentioned it to Claire and she suggested that I  let her wax it.  She said that it would last at least six weeks.  So that's what I had her do.  It turned out great.  It looks just the way I like it between trims, although after three weeks it's beginning to lose its sharp look as it grows out, but the hairline stays exactly the way she waxed it the first time.  I only get it waxed maybe once every six months and there's not much to take care of then," Kate said running her hand through her short hair and letting it linger at her nape which she fingered a moment before lowering her hand.

“Claire did it for you?  She likes shaving my nape.  She suggested it in the first place and kept shaving it a little higher until she got it the way it is now.  She did it yesterday and I think it's even higher than the last time.  I liked it and I've never objected.  I should ask her if she thinks I should get it waxed.  I'd LOVE to have it smooth all the time," Meg said.

“Lucie looks very cute with the sides and back shaved and she'd look even better with it very nice and smooth, especially with that little cap of curls.  How often will she need a perm?" Kate asked.

“About every six weeks I suppose.  I have to agree she does look cute with it shaved up like that.  It will certainly be a lot cooler.  Maybe it's not such a bad idea after all," Meg admitted.

“What's not a bad idea?" Lucie asked.

“I think you'd look very good with the back and sides waxed nice and smooth Lucie and you wouldn't have to shave it all the time.  What do you think?"  Meg asked her as she emerged from examining herself in the nearby bathroom mirror.

“Are you going to get yours done like that?" Lucie asked.

“I'm certain that I am.  I think I'll like it a lot," Meg said.

“Well, maybe I will.  I do like the way it looks," Lucie responded

“It's a good idea.  And my idea is that we should help you get the place cleaned up and get out of your bouffant hair.  I really appreciate you doing this for us Meg," Aggie laughed.

“You're welcome, but I'm still a little shocked at the idea of shaving the heads of all those girls.  It just seems so unnatural.  And I don't know what in the world got into me to shave Lucie like that even though I realize it looks very good and I'm encouraging her to have it waxed," Meg voiced her perplexity.

“Don't worry about it Meg.  You'll get used to the idea.  You might even like it After all you already like Lucie with her little cap of curls and every thing else nice and smooth.  Anyway, you sure did us a big favor and we owe you one," Aggie said as she started sweeping up the considerable mass of hair that had accumulated on the floor.

“Wow that is a lot of hair.  We need to help get it cleaned up or you'll be finding hair in everything you cook," Kate said as she pitched in by putting swept up hair into a large trash bag.

“We really ought to mop the floor to get it all cleaned up," Aggie suggested.

“You don't need to do that," Meg protested.

“We gave you a lot of extra work and about five times as much hair on the floor as you expected.  It's the least we can do," Kate told her laughing.

Fifteen minutes later the floor was immaculate and they were on their way home.

“You got one of those shavers to do your kids didn't you?" Kate asked as they stood by their cars.

“It's a wet or dry shaver.  The instructions say it works best if you use shaving cream.  So that's what I intend to do.  They have them at Pechtman's," Aggie said.

“I think I'll drive over there and get one," Kate replied.  “I do think they will look extremely good with smooth shiny heads.  What about something to make them shiny?"

“That's easy.  There are several kinds of sunscreen and even some makeup that does it.  I have a couple of ideas that I'm going to try."

“They'll need sunscreen won't they.  I'll try that first.  Obviously a little oil would do it, but they might object to something greasy like that."

“I'm sure you're right, but just tell them how good Madonna looks with her shiny face," Aggie laughed.

“Where are they anyway?  I guess they all walked back home or somewhere," Kate said.

“The boys are going to the park to play basketball," Aggie said.

“Wendy is probably at your place with Ellie," Kate advised her.

“OK.  Timmy come on.  We heading home.  See you," Aggie said.

“Right.  Send Wendy home around four. OK?"

“Will do."

Aggie walked into the house and began cleaning up a few things that she had left in the sink when she took her kids to Meg's.  A few minutes Lance opened the door to the basement and spoke to her.

“Could you come down to the workshop?  I need to ask you something?" Lance said.

Uh oh, Aggie thought to herself. Lance must have seen the girls already.

She closed the door behind her as she headed down behind lance and followed him into his workshop and closed that door too.

“All right!  What the hell is going on?  What is Ellie doing with her head shaved? Are you out of your mind?" Lance barely managed to keep his voice under control.

“She wanted to get it shaved just like Wendy and Diane.  So I let her," Aggie said.

“That's insane.  Girls don't have their heads shaved.  What the hell were you thinking?"

“Of course girls get their heads shaved.  They do it for charity or just because they like it that way.  Anyway I think she looks innocent and sweet.  They both do.  So what's the harm?" Aggie responded.

“Harm!  Harm!  They look like freaks.  No girl should have her head shaved.  What the crap is matter with you.  You should have put a stop to it before it ever happened.  Where were you?  Off in some fairyland with your head up your ass?"

“I was right there.  In fact I encouraged her to get it shaved.  I think she looks darling with no hair.  What if she had alopecia?  Would you insist that she wear a wig all the time.  Lots of kids have alopecia.  Are they all freaks?" Aggie rejoined.

“I don't give a damn about that.  What I care about is not having a freak for a daughter.  You Encouraged her!  What the fuck is wrong with you?  This is your fault and you'd better take care of it.  What are you going to do about it?"

Aggie bristled.  “I'll tell you what I'm going to do about it.  I'm going to help her keep her head shaved as long as she wants it!  That's what I'm going to do.  So you'd better calm down and start acting rational!

“By God if you don't straighten this out I'm going to shave your head even if I have to tie you down to do it!  If she doesn't have some hair on her head in the next couple of days I swear I'm going to shave yours." Lance was nearly livid with anger.

Aggie looked at him, but didn't answer.  Something clicked in her head.

“Is that it?  Can I go now?"

“You hear what I'm telling you?"

“I hear you loud and clear Lance," Aggie said in the calmest voice she could muster.

“You'd better remember it too!"

“I'll remember it – you can be sure of that," Aggie answered as she opened the door and left, closing it behind her.

Lance was know for his tendency to fly off the handle, as the expression goes, but he usually calmed down and began to think more calmly after he had some time to consider things a bit more.  Aggie was prepared for it, but this one promised to be somewhat more serious than most.  Nevertheless she was determined to weather it, and continue on the path that she had chosen.

She went back up to the kitchen and quietly set about preparing a dinner that she knew was one of Lance's favorites.  At the same time she plotted her strategy for the upcoming week.  When as much as possible had been done ahead of time she went outside to putter in her flower garden.  An hour or so later she went upstairs to write an email letter to her parents and Lance's - a job she had taken up many years earlier.  She remembered her own Mother doing the same thing when she was very young, except that her Mother did it with an electric typewriter making multiple 'carbon copies to send to various members of the family.  This time she would attach a picture of the boys and Ellie with their heads shaved.  After writing a bit she decided to take a picture of Ellie before she forgot to do it.  Grabbing her camera she went down the hall to Ellie's room where the two girls were deeply engrossed in playing an online game.

“Hi girls.  Wow! You look so sweet with you bald heads together playing that game!  I love it.  Could you take a break so I can get a couple of nice pictures of you two good looking bald girls," she asked

“Oh Mom!" Lucie protested.

“Thanks Ms. Curtis.  I think it's great.  I love it too," Wendy replied.

“So how about you Sweetie," Aggie said to Ellie.

“I like it too.  It's very cool, but I'd like to have some earrings like Wendy," Ellie said.

Aggie paused for a moment as she considered this.  She had said that Ellie could get her earls pierced when she was twelve, but now she reconsidered.

“Are you sure you'll take care of them the way you're supposed to," Aggie responded.

“I'm sure.  I really want to have some dangles or hoops with my head shaved like this."

“I agree with you.  That would look very nice.  OK.  I'll take you to the mall as soon as I can and you can get it done.  Now let me get some pictures.  It'll only take a couple of minutes.  Why don't the two of you stand over there away from the window.  That's good.  OK, Wendy you can come over here so I can get Ellie.  That does it Ellie.  These are good pictures.  Your grandparents are going to be pretty surprised I expect," Aggie laughed.

“Oh.  And Wendy you Mom said that you should come home about four."

“OK.  I will."

Aggie finished the letter, attached the photo of Mark she had taken last week, the one of Timmy she had managed to get of him just after they had arrived home, and the new one of Ellie and Wendy.  She sent the e-mail on to their their parents and a few other relatives.  She had decided to send the one of the two girls at the last minute.  It seemed like a good idea to show the two bald girls smiling together.

Dinner passed relatively uneventfully.  Lance brought up the subject of Ellie's shaved head only once.

“Looks like you got a pretty clean shave this time Mark."

“Yeah.  Ms. Wilcox made it extra good this time.  Pretty neat."

“So what do you think of having a bald sister?"

“It's cool.  Diane looks really cool.  I like the way she looks.  Ellie will look just as good in a couple of years if she keeps it shaved."

“You think she should keep it shaved?"

“Sure Dad. Why not.  They all look good."

“I see," Lance said, allowing that subject to lapse.

Aggie breathed an inward sigh of relief knowing that one crisis had been adverted.  She wanted to hug Mark for being so casually supportive of the idea of girls having shaved heads.

Lance was restrained, even a little cool, from then until they fell asleep late that evening.

The next morning was much the same, but Aggie went about her business as usual.  Since it was Sunday, Lance would be going out with the rest of his golf foursome later that morning.  She had her day planned.

Shortly after Lance left she was ready.

“Mark.  Come on upstairs.  I want to give you a smooth shave to see how well this shaver works.  And I want you to experience having it really smooth too – so you'll know what to expect."

“I hope it doesn't take long.  We're playing hoops this afternoon."

“What about your homework?" Aggie asked suspiciously.

“I did most of it Friday.  I've got some more, but I can easily get it done after dinner."

“I think I've heard that song before and somebody was up past eleven getting finished.  How about you being back here by four."

“Ah Mom!"

“No arguments.  Just wear your watch and get back here by four.  OK?"

“OK."

“Sit here in this chair and I'll get you shaved.  You'll have the best looking head out there," Aggie kidded him.

Aggie dispensed some gel from the can she was holding and rubbed it over Mark's head.  A little more from the can and she was able to cover his head with a nice cap of shaving foam.  The shaver was fully charged so she didn't waste any time getting started.  The instructions had said to shave against the direction of growth for the best results so she started at the top of his head and worked backwards from his forehead.  So trial and error quickly revealed that going over each area twice seemed to be quite effective.  She took her time, but in twenty minutes she had achieved a satisfactory result.

“That's not bad Mark.  The instructions said to use a good moisturizer after shaving.  I'll clean off the excess and put on some moisturizer."

“It's done.  You can feel it if you like."

Mark ran his hand over his head, discovering that only by pressing harder than normal could he feel any roughness.  “That pretty smooth Mom.  It feels good."

“It looks good too.  I think you look quite cool.  Maybe we can work out a routine to keep you looking good like this.  I'd have to get a lot faster at it though.  We'll figure something out," Aggie said.

“Can I go now," Mark asked.

“Sure.  Tell Ellie I'm ready for her, on your way out.  She's probably watching cartoons."

Mark took off.  A few minutes later Ellie showed up.

“There you are. Good.  Let's get you shaved nice and smooth and we'll head over to the mall and get your ears pierced," Aggie told her.

“Really!  That's great Mom!"

“Sit here in this chair so I can do you.  I wish you were a little higher.  Well I should be able to manage it anyway."

Once again she applied the gel, spreading it around as it produced a thick creamy foam which covered Ellie's head.  With the experience from shaving Mark behind her and having developed some confidence, she proceeded without hesitation.  This time she started on the side of Ellie's head and worked upwards then began shaving the top from front to back.  She applied a little more pressure, especially when she repeated the shaving of an area, in the hope of achieving an even smoother result.  As she proceeded her hopes were largely fulfilled.  Ellie's head was becoming quite smooth.  When she was finished, she ran her fingers over it from front to back feeling for any rough spots and was gratified at their absence.

“Wow, that feels really nice and smooth Ellie.  That's the way I want you to have it all the time.  When I'm finished you're going to be absolutely adorable."

“Can I feel it?"

“Wait a little longer, until after I get you all cleaned up and put on a little moisturizer."

“OK, now you can feel it," Aggie said, confident that Ellie would realize that it was almost baby smooth.

“That feels really smooth Mom.  Can I keep it like that?"

“I'll have to shave you every day, but I'll do it if you want me to."

“I think I want to keep it smooth like this."

“Good.  I have another surprise.  I have something to put on your head that will make it look very natural and give it a wonderful, fresh look," Aggie said as she opened a small bottle and began using a small sponge to apply it to Ellie's head.  The slight pallor that Ellie's head exhibited began to disappear to be replaced by a skin tone almost identical to that of her natural light skin, but with a difference – there was a noticeable glow to it now, the consequence of the light being reflected from some shiny material present in the makeup.

“It looks beautiful Ellie.  It's so natural looking and I love the nice glow that it gives you.  Isn't it great?"  Aggie's enthusiasm was considerably greater than Ellie's even though Ellie was very pleased with her new look.  At the moment she was more interested in getting her ears pierced than admiring her newly smooth and shiny bald head.

Ellie looked at herself and agreed.

“It looks really nice Mom.  It's a lot better than it was," Ellie said.

“OK, let's go collect Timmy and we'll be on our way to the Mall," Aggie said as she rinsed out the basin and cleaned up the head of the shaver before putting it back in its charging stand.

“What kind can I get Mom?  Can I get hoops,"  Ellie asked as they walked into the mall.

“You'll probably have to have studs for a while.  Your ears have to heal before you can put in those curved ear wires for hoops or dangles.  We'll find out pretty soon," Aggie told her.

They arrived at the kiosk that featured ear piercing and looked at the display of earrings while they waited for the clerk to finish with her customer.  Aggie located the tray of piercing studs and called Ellie.

“Here they are Ellie.  These are what you'll have to choose from.  You might just want to do the gold balls to begin with,"  Aggie Suggested.

“Can I have these?" Ellie said pointing out a pair of studs with ruby like stones.

“Of course, if that's what you want," Aggie said as the clerk came over to them.

“Can I help you,"  she asked.

“Yes, my daughter Ellie here needs to get her ears pierced.  She got her head shaved yesterday so we thought that some nice earrings would complement her bald head," Aggie said.

“I like the red ones.  I really want to have some hoops, but I guess I'll have to wait for the holes to heal first," Ellie added.

“Well, uh," the clerk hesitated.  “If you have any kind of immune problem, it might not be a good idea to get your ears pierced."

“What? Oh, I get it.  You mean if she has cancer or something like that.  She's perfectly healthy.  She just wanted to try having a shaved head.  She thinks it looks good.  So do I.  In fact I think she looks sweetly innocent and just adorable," Aggie explained.

“You like having your head shaved?" the slightly dazed clerk asked.

“Yes.  My best friend got hers shaved too.  A lot of the kids are talking about getting their heads shaved like this.  I think it's really neat.  I'm going to keep it shaved, but I want to have some hoops and dangle earrings to wear," Ellie said.

“That would look nice I suppose.  Is that your brother?" the clerk asked indicating Timmy who was wandering around the kiosk looking at all the earrings.

“Yep.  Timmy got his head shaved too.  So did my other brother Mark.  He's fourteen," Ellie volunteered.

“So are a lot of your friends are getting their heads shaved," the clerk said questioningly, clearly fascinated at the notion.

“A lot of the guys have gotten their heads shaved and some of the girls want to do it too.  Wendy's sister Diane got hers shaved.  She's fourteen," Ellie replied.

“That's very interesting.  Well, let's get you taken care of.  Come on in and have a seat on my chair so I can do your ears."

“OK.  Does it hurt very much?"

“Sort of like a hard pinch.  It's over almost before you have time to notice it."

She placed a red dot on each of Ellie's earlobes, wiped one off and reapplied it.

“There.  Does that look OK," she asked  Aggie.

“Yes, that looks right."

After a moment of fiddling with her machine she was ready.  There was a snap.  Ellie blinked and tears began to run down her face as she struggled to keep from crying.

Aggie quickly retrieved a tissue from her pocket and came over to wipe the tears.

“OK,“ she asked holding Ellie hand.

Ellie snuffled once, then nodded.

“It will be done in just a second," the clerk reassured her as she inserted the second stud in the piercing gun.

Aggie squeezed her hand as the machine did its snap, inserting the stud in Ellie's right ear.  This time she had closed her eyes ahead of time and managed to stave off the tears.  The clerk put the little clip on the stud protruding from the back of her ear then picked up a hand mirror so that she could see herself.

“They look very nice," the clerk said.

“Are you OK, now?" Aggie asked.

The clerk was putting her gun away and noticed Timmy watching, fascinated by the procedure.

“Well, Timmy are you getting your ears pierced too?" she asked.

Timmy looked at her then at Aggie.

“Can I get my ears pierced like Ellie?" he asked innocently, but in all seriousness.

Once again Aggie found her mind doing a little dance with a new thought.  Could a six year old boy wear earrings.  She knew she had seen it a few times, but she couldn't remember where. I saw Elijah Blue on the Cher show years ago, she recalled.  She felt tempted.

“I don't know Timmy.  Do any of the boys in first grade have earrings?"

“Wesley does," Timmy responded.

“I've done any number of boys his age.  It seems to be getting more popular as the older boys do it.  You see it all the time on football players," the clerk interjected.

“Not today Timmy.  I'll think about it.  We can talk about it later if you're still interested," Aggie said, reluctantly postponing any serious consideration of the idea.

“Your earrings look very nice Ellie.  They do complement your head.

“I need to clean around the stud on both sides and put on some of this antiseptic for you Ellie," the clerk said.  “Then I'll show you how to keep the area clean, so it won't get infected."

“Pay attention to her Ellie.  Remember you promised to take care of them until they heal up," Aggie admonished her.

“OK Mom.  I'll make sure I keep them clean," Ellie promised.

Finally they were finished and left with Ellie carrying a small bag containing bottles of cleaning solution and antiseptic as well as a sheet of instructions.

During the drive home Ellie voiced a concern that she had developed.

“Mom.  How are you going to keep my head shaved smooth all the time?"

“I've got a plan Ellie.  I'll do your head right after you get home from school.  On the weekends it might be at different times, but I'll always get it done, don't worry.  You're going to have the nicest smooth bald head in your school, I guarantee it," Aggie laughed.

Ellie laughed in turn then giggled as she ran her hand over her smooth head.

A special bond between them was emerging.
