Meg is the neighborhood barber for boys. She has discovered that she likes to keep her two boys' heads shaved with her Oster 76 clipper with its #00000 balding head. She has been making her case that it was the best haircut a boy could have. Many Mom's in the neighborhood have agreed and now many if not most of the boys in the area keep their heads shaved bald. Much to her consternation, some of the girls and their Mom's have found the idea of girls having a shaved head to be the ideal haircut for them too. So Aggie has taken her two boys and her girl Ellie to Meg's kitchen barbershop. Kate, Aggie's best friend, has climbed onto the bandwagon and taken her two girls and one boy as well. Meg is quite put out by the idea of shaving the heads of these three girls, but can't find an argument that is persuasive. ( Meg and her Friends She shaves their heads on Saturday morning. Later that day, Ellie asks if she can get her ears pierced so she can wear hoop and dangly earrings. After a little consideration she agrees to take Ellie to the local mall on Sunday and get her ears pierced. Some of the aftermath of Ellie getting her head shaved takes place in this episode.
Sunday
That afternoon Ellie showed off her new earrings to her Father, Lance. Aggie was prepared for an outburst at some point, but he seemed rather blasé about it. Later he asked Aggie why she hadn't waited until Ellie was twelve, the age they had agreed would be right for Ellie.
“Well, she's been asking me for a year now. A lot of her friends have had their ears pierced for several years already. And I think she really means it when she says that she's going to take care of them. So I gave in," Aggie responded.
“Oh well, just be sure she does take care of them," Lance said. He had not noticed that Ellie's head was shaved smooth and looked quite natural.
That evening Aggie had a brief conversation with Mark about keeping his head shaved.
“Mark I have a suggestion for you. I don't think I'll be able to shave your head for you every morning so why don't you try shaving it yourself when you take a shower tonight. If you have a problem, I can do it after you finish your shower, OK."
“Sure. I should be able to do it, no problem.
Monday
Monday morning Aggie queried him. “How did it go last night?"
“No problem Mom. It felt pretty smooth. Want to feel it?" he asked.
“Not bad Mark. I guess you've really gotten the hang of it. I'm sure you'll get even better with a little practice," Aggie praised him.
Aggie felt relieved. She could do Ellie after she arrived home from school. She had decided that shaving Timmy only every other day would work out fine. So Monday afternoon when Timmy and Ellie arrived home together she was ready. She had a snack already prepared for them and in short order she had Timmy sitting on an old kitchen stool that was high enough that she could reach him easily. He was unusually cooperative and allowed her to cover his head with foam which she proceeded to remove with her shaver. It didn't take long on his small head and soon he had a neat and nearly smooth bald head. Aggie was pleased with it. She cleaned off the remaining foam and applied a little moisturizer followed by a small quantity of shiny sunscreen.
“There you go Timmy. You look super," Aggie told him.
He laughed. “Can I go now?" he said as he hopped down and ran his hand over his head.
“Sure. Tell Ellie I'm ready for her."
“So tell me about your first day at school with a bald head," Aggie asked, a small sliver of worry still lodged in her mind.
“It was great Mom. All the kids wanted to feel our heads. They thought it was very cool," Ellie said. “Anyway, our teacher had a hard time getting everybody settled down after lunch. She asked our class if they liked my bald head. Everybody put their hands up. Wendy and I got to play on the same team when we played soccer."
“That's nice," Aggie said as she began spreading the foaming gel over Ellie's head. “I'm glad everyone liked it."
“Charlene said she was going to get hers shaved too, but the kids laughed and said they didn't believe her. Do you think her Mom will let her get it shaved? I hope she does."
“I can't say Ellie. Not too many Mom's are going to let their girls get shaved. Maybe she'll let Charlene get hers shaved now that you and Wendy are keeping your heads shaved."
“I think some more of the boys are going to get their heads shaved."
“That would be nice. A shaved head is a really good idea for kids, both boys and girls. You look super good with it shaved."
“It would be really funny if everybody in our class had their heads shaved," Ellie giggled.
“It certainly would be," Aggie laughed. “OK, you're all done – nice and smooth. I used a little sunscreen on it so it would have some shine. I think we'll save the other stuff for special occasions."
Two hours later when Mark arrived after volleyball practice, she queried him about Diane.
“Did you talk to Diane? How did her day go?"
“She got plenty of attention. The guys were really blown away. Some of them thought she looked great. The girls were kind of mixed. Several of them thought it was very cool. She told me a couple really wanted to get their heads shaved too, but most of them said they could never do that. A few were freaked out. She was actually pretty excited about keeping it shaved when we talked on the bus. She's pretty cool," Mark said.
“So she is. She looks great with her head shaved too," Aggie said.
The next several days were uneventful. The kids had quickly accepted the idea of a girl with her head shaved. Both Ellie and Wendy found that they were accepted and even admired by the other girls. Diane found similar acceptance and even admiration among many of the girls. It even appeared that come summer she might be joined by several of them. She didn't lack for admirers either, Mark among them. Up to that point he had been uninterested in girls.
Wednesday evening Aggie called Kate.
“Hi, Aggie. What's up?"
“Nothing much. I just called so we could share our thoughts and how you think things are going with the girls."
“Not bad at all. We've worked out a routine. I'm shaving Wendy, but Diane and Bart do their own heads now. Diane is enthusiastic about keeping her head shaved. Apparently there's a boy that she likes who has taken a liking to her. He came over this afternoon."
“That's nice. I think Mark likes her too."
“I know. Diane likes him too. She doesn't know which one she likes the most," Kate laughed.
“Mark said she was getting along OK."
“I think it's going well for her. She really likes having her head shaved and her enthusiasm is catching. I'm almost certain that some other girls are going to join her fairly soon and certainly when school is out for the summer. I wouldn't be surprised if a handful of bald girls don't show up next September. And obviously Wendy is as happy as a clam with her head shaved. So what about Ellie?"
“It would be nice for Diane if a few other girls joined her. Ellie is just about where Wendy is. She is perfectly at ease with her bald head and looks forward to getting it shaved smooth. She thinks some other girls will get their heads shaved as well."
“That's what Wendy said too. Maybe by the time they get to High School there'll be quite a few more," Kate laughed.
“I wouldn't be surprised, assuming they keep their heads shaved that long."
How did Lance react? Any problems?"
“He had a little explosion Saturday, but he's been calm since them. I know that something is going to happen sooner or later and I'm prepared for it."
“Well, good luck."
“Don't worry. I think I have it under control. Talk to you later."
“OK. Bye."
Lance had remained unexpectedly silent on the subject of Ellie's shaved head, but Aggie knew that was not going to last much longer. He could not escape noticing that Ellie's head had remained smoothly shaved every day along with Mark's and Timmy's. Wendy had been over one evening to work with Ellie on a joint project in their science class. Wendy had greeted him in her normal cheerful and polite way. The two girls were just delightfully cute with their bald heads in Aggie's opinion.
Friday a Week Later
When Friday came around Aggie had made her decision. She headed out to do her usual Friday errands – normally just grocery shopping. She had left early and even after getting her groceries for the week when she got to the mall it was too early and the department store was not yet open. She browsed in the few small shops that were open before she headed to the big department store. She had done her homework and knew just what she was looking for.
As she expected, she found it – a good quality battery operated clipper that came with a minimal number of accessories. At a bit over forty dollars, it wasn't cheap, but was far less expensive that the Oster that Meg used. She paid for her purchase and headed home.
Once home she put away her groceries, had a bit of lunch while she read the instructions for the clipper. It included a small vial of oil, a cleaning brush and a few guides. The adjustable head could cut as close as a sixty fourth of an inch. It needed to be oiled and charged for sixteen hours before its first use. Finishing her lunch she gathered up the clipper and its assortment of accessories and took them upstairs. There was an electrical outlet in a rather awkward spot between her night stand and the bed, but she managed to plug in the little cube power source. The cord from the cube was plugged into the clipper and the clipper and its accessories were placed in the bottom drawer of the night stand and the drawer closed.
Aggie looked at herself in the mirror behind the large dresser. She took a deep breath and relaxed. She was prepared.
At three thirty Timmy bounced into the house followed more sedately by Ellie.
“Hi Timmy. There's a special snack for you in the kitchen," Aggie told him as he raced by her.
“Hi Mom. Charlene said that she's going to get her head shaved next week. Her Mom said that she could," Ellie said triumphantly.
“You don't say! Well that will be fun. Go ahead and have your snack and then I'll shave you," Aggie said.
Twenty minutes later, she was sitting on the chair getting her head shaved by Aggie.
“There you go Ellie. I'm just amazed at how cute you look with your head shaved smooth. It's just perfect," Aggie expressed her enthusiasm.
“Anton got his head shaved. And Beth said she wanted to get hers shaved. I told her she should because that's the very best way to do your head," Ellie said as she rubbed her head with her hand. “It feels really nice Mom. I want to keep it shaved for a long time."
“I certainly hope that you do. I'll help you all I can." Aggie said.
Aggie had become quite proficient in the past week and was proud of how quickly she could shave Ellie's head and especially how well it turned out with Ellie's head surprisingly soft and smooth. Now she applied some moisturizer and gently massaged her head for a few minutes, a luxury that she knew that Ellie appreciated. Ellie's head had gained some color so that there was no need to use the colored sunscreen although it was still a good idea because Ellie was outside frequently. Aggie applied some sunscreen as a last step.
“It's all done Ellie. It should feel really nice now!" Aggie told her with a little chuckle as she ran her own hands over Ellie's head enjoying the softness.
“You like to feel it don't you, Mom," Ellie said.
“I do like the way it feels. I think it feels just as nice as it did when you were a baby. Well, you're a good looking young girl and not a baby and I shouldn't be saying things like that. I thinks it's just one of those silly things that Mother's think of sometime when their kids are growing up," Aggie said.
“It's OK Mom. I don't mind. It feels good when you give me a massage," Ellie said.
“We'd better get things cleaned up for now. What are you going to be doing the rest of the day?"
“I have something to ask you. Wendy wants me to come to her house for a sleep over tonight. Can I do that? I'll get most of my homework done today and the rest of it on Sunday," Ellie made her case.
“Will, I don't see why not, but I'd better talk to Wendy's Mom about it," Aggie told her.
Half an hour later she knew that Kate approved. Kate had even promised to shave Ellen on Saturday morning when she shaved Wendy. She also knew that there were too other girls coming, Charlene and Tara. Later in the afternoon Ellie left with her little roll around case with her Pjs, her toothbrush, her ear cleaning solution and a change of clothes to walk the two blocks to Wendy's house.
Mark would arrive from baseball practice shortly before five O'clock and Lance would arrive forty five minutes later. She didn't think that Lance would have anything to say, but she was ready with a carefully prepared response.
Mark arrived and she greeted him.
“Hi Mark. How did practice go?"
“OK. We've got a pretty good team. Coach wants me to play setter. Ryan hurt his ankle and can't jump very well."
“You don't mind?"
“It's a pretty important position and you have to be able to jump and block shots. I'll need to practice a lot more to be good at it, but I think I can do it."
“Good luck. I'm sure you can. Do you have a lot of homework?"
“Yeah. I'd better get started on it."
“OK. I'll call you when it's ready. Ellie is over at Wendy's for tonight and tomorrow."
Lance arrived at the usual time and gave her a perfunctory greeting and kiss. She didn't push him.
“I'll put dinner on the table in a half hour. Ellie is staying the night with Wendy at Kate's house. She'll be back tomorrow afternoon. She showed me her homework assignments. She'll be able to get them done easily on Sunday."
“OK," Lance said without much interest.
That evening was uneventful. Lance talked with Mark about volleyball and asked him an offhand question about his shaved head.
“Looks like you've had your head shaved recently."
“Uh, yeah. I shave it every night when I shower. It's no big deal and I like to keep it shaved. Some of the guys on the team have started shaving too," Mark replied.
“So you intend to keep it shaved?" Lance responded.
“I think so. It's pretty neat and some of the girls like it. Diane likes it," Mark volunteered.
“Was she one of the girls that got her head shaved?"
“Yeah. She's pretty neat," Mark answered.
“I suppose she's the only one," Lance suggested.
“Actually she's not. Another girl got hers shaved yesterday. Some of the guys like it," Mark said somewhat hesitantly.
“Seems pretty crazy to me," Lance replied. “I've got some work to do on a report. I'll be in my office."
Lance stood up from the table and left.
“Can I go now?" Timmy asked.
“Put your plate and stuff on the counter then you can go," Aggie said.
Timmy complied and Mark stood up slowly.
“Dad's pretty mad about Ellie isn't he?"
“A little bit, but things will work out. Don't worry about it," Aggie told him. “You have a practice tomorrow don't you? You'd better get back to work on your homework."
“OK," Mark said as he headed toward his room.
Aggie stood thinking for a moment, then continued cleaning up the kitchen. She thought she knew how Lance was going to react. She was sure that he realized that Ellie had been shaved during the week. She also expected that he would not say anything until Saturday morning after Mark had left for volleyball practice.
Aggie had spent the week being extra solicitous to Lance, fixing some of the foods he particularly liked and giving him a little more attention than usual, but not enough to make him suspicious. They had even enjoyed some love making the previous night, somewhat to her surprise, even though she had subtly encouraged it. What was more important to her was that he had not commented about Ellie's shaved head for the entire week except to make a single remark the previous evening. after He had observed Ellie for the past five days, during which Ellie seemed to be uncharacteristically cheerful and even exuberant. Thursday evening he had overheard Ellie talking to Wendy on the phone when she exclaimed at how great it was to have a smooth shaved head and declaring that she wanted to stay shaved forever.
“What's come over her? Why is she so happy with a shaved head," Lance asked perplexed.
“I don't know. I can only guess. I think she get a lot of positive attention. I know she likes how she looks and how her head feels. There's probably more, but for sure it's been a positive experience for her. It's very convenient and she seems to appreciate that as well. Another girl in her class is getting her head shaved too, so it's not just her and Wendy," Aggie had answered. “And I'm very surprised at the way she's been attacking her homework. Something in her attitude has changed as well."
“I still don't like it. Girls should have hair," Lance had replied without much heat.
Saturday Morning
Aggie slipped out of bed a little after seven O'clock – she was an early riser – and went to the kitchen to fix a pot of coffee. She knew that Mark would be getting up fairly soon because of his nine O'clock volleyball practice and Timmy was an early riser as well. Mark usually had an orange to start his breakfast so she peeled one, sectioned it and put the sections in a bowl at his usual place. He would probably have cereal and milk which he would fix for himself. As an afterthought she made some hot chocolate for him and Timmy. She sat down to have her usual applesauce, hot cereal and a cup of coffee.
Mark arrived a few minutes after eight O'clock and sat down.
“Good morning Mark. I made some hot chocolate for you," Aggie greeted him.
“Thanks," Mark said as he devoured the orange sections along with some special supplements that were supposed to boost his energy and help build muscles on his wiry frame.
“Hi Timmy. What would you like for breakfast," Aggie asked as Timmy came into the kitchen.
“Can I have French toast with a lot of syrup on it?" he asked.
Sure, but you need to drink your orange juice and eat your vitamin first," Aggie told him.
Timmy gave her a pained look, but proceeded to chew the vitamin that was on his plate and swallow his orange juice. Half an hour later he had finished and was on his way to watch his favorite Saturday morning cartoons. He had a project underway in the small backyard and would be occupying himself with that most of the day if Aggie didn't call him in to do other things such as practicing his letters.
Lance arrived just as Timmy was leaving.
“What's up Timmy?" Lance asked.
“I'm going to finish my fort," Timmy answered as he hurried out the back door.
“Hi hon. How about some French toast. I made some for Timmy and I have egg left over," Aggie asked him.
“Sounds good. How about some bacon or sausage?" Lance responded.
“I can do that. I have bacon in the fridge. It will take a few extra minutes."
“No problem. How about a cup of coffee."
“Coming right up," Aggie responded.
Having finished making Lance's breakfast she sat down opposite him with a second cup of coffee. She made small talk for a while to which Lance responded mostly with monosyllables. Finally Aggie gave up, sat back in her chair and enjoyed admiring the spring blossoms on their few bushes and plants.
Lance deposited his plate and utensils in the dishwasher and sat back down with his coffee, obviously wanting to say something.
“What's on you mind Lance?" Aggie asked after the silence had become prolonged.
“Well, you remember our discussion from last week – about Ellie?"
“I'm not likely to forget it. I remember it very well."
There was another long silence as Aggie waited patiently for Lance to continue, determined not to appear to be challenging him.
Finally Lance responded.
“So what do you plan to do about it?"
Aggie let that question hang in the air for a while before she replied.
“I'm going to keep her head shaved just the way she wants it. She likes being bald and I like her being bald. You heard her say she wants to stay bald. I see no reason that she should be forced to let her hair grow if she doesn't want to and I'll encourage and support her as long as she wants to stay bald. When and if she wants to grow her hair again I'll support her in that too," Aggie said quietly, but firmly.
Once again there was a long silence.
“And you remember what I said if she didn't start growing her hair?"
This time Aggie answered with only a brief pause to compose her thoughts.
“Yes, Lance. I remember it very clearly. I understand exactly what you said and what you threatened."
“So, what are you going to do about it?"
Aggie pondered how to answer this question in light of what she had already said. Finally she knew what she wanted to say.
“Lance, I'm your wife. I promised to love and honor you, but I never promised to obey you. I do love and honor you. I respect you too. You've always been a man of your word. You said what you were going to do if I didn't make Ellie start growing out her hair. I didn't do that and don't intend to. Therefore, I'm going to accept your promised punishment. Like I said, I respect you, but if you don't make good on your promise I'll respect you a little less."
Lance sat, momentarily stunned into speechlessness.
“You expect me to shave your head?"
“In a word, yes. That was what you promised and I expect you to fulfill your promise. Does that make any sense to you? Wait here a minute I'll be right back."
Aggie went quickly up to their bedroom, retrieved the clipper, a pair of scissors, a comb and the plastic cape that came with them and laid everything on the kitchen table. She sat down.
“You want me to shave your head right now!"
“Do you want to wait? I'm not going to change my mind and do what you want, so why wait?"
Once again Lance was speechless. Aggie stood up, pulled the chair into the middle of the floor and sat down in it expectantly.
Lance slowly stood up, walked around the table and picked up the clipper.
“Would you mind putting the cape around me before you start," Aggie asked.
“Uh, yeah, sure," the somewhat muddled Lance answered.
His mind told him that he had lost control of the situation and that it had been completely reversed. He had made the threat and it had somehow been turned upside down so that he found himself being expected to shave his wife's head. If he didn't he would be tacitly agreeing that Ellie could stay shaved with his blessing, and if he did, it appeared he was doing exactly what Aggie wanted him to do. But he had to keep his promise and carry out the threat. His self-respect demanded it. Aggie had made that clear. He turned on the clipper and tentatively put it at Aggie's forehead and hesitated. Aggie remained silent and unmoving – waiting for him to proceed. He pushed the clipper into her hair a short distance then stopped. He waited for some response from Aggie, but none was forthcoming. Taking a deep breath he pushed the clipper slowly toward the crown of her head and watched as the cut off hair slid down the cape onto the floor.
By the time he had completed the second pass over her head he found himself in an odd mental state. All of his previous thoughts had been willed out of existence and his mind was entirely focused on the job at hand. He had steady hands and an eye for detail from the many electronic projects that he had worked on in his small shop. He continued clippering Aggie's head slowly removing the hair, first on the right side, going around her ear, then up behind it. The back followed as he held up the hair with the comb and clippered it off up to the crown. Hair continued to slide down the cape onto the floor. The left side followed as the clipper was pushed up beyond the bare crown, went up behind her left ear and up removing the hair there. Standing almost in front of Aggie Lance pushed the clipper up in front of her ear leaving only a strip of hair above her ear. A few more quick swipes and they were gone. Without thinking about it he went about making sure that the shaving of Aggie's head was completed in the same meticulous fashion that he completed any project. Finally after going over her head one last time he turned off the clipper and laid it on the table.
“You're finished?" Aggie asked.
“Yes."
“Good," Aggie said as she reached behind her, unfastened the Velcro strip and deposited the hair that had fallen onto her lap onto the floor.
“What are you going to do now," Lance asked.
“Clean up this mess for one. After that we'll see."
Aggie stood up and laid the cape over the back of the chair before she turned to Lance.
“I still love, honor and respect you Lance. I hope you'll be able to love honor and respect your newly bald wife," Aggie said as she stepped up to him and gave him a hug.
Still perplexed at the strange turn of events, Lance returned her embrace.
“Go on. I know you're eager to get to work on your project. I'll get this cleaned up," Aggie said.
“What are you planning to do now?" Lance asked, suspicious that she might do something – something extreme – although he couldn't imagine what.
“I'm just thinking. Don't worry. I'm not going out and do anything extreme the way you're imagining I might. I do have to decide how to deal with a bald head, since I going to have it for a while," Aggie said with a smile.
“Well........ As long as you don't go off the deep end," Lance said tentatively. “What do you mean by a while?" Lance asked.
“As long as Ellie wants to keep her head shaved. I thought that was implied by what you said."
“You don't have to do that."
“I think it's only fair. I sort of egged her into it, even if she did want to do it and likes it, so I should suffer the consequences."
Lance shrugged, clearly realizing that he had better say very little rather than digging an even deeper hole. “OK. I suppose that makes sense."
“Go on and enjoy your project and I'll clean this up and putter around here. Don't worry about me," Aggie reassured him.
“OK.," Lance said reluctantly, still suspicious that Aggie was up to something.
Aggie set about cleaning up the hair on the floor as Lance finally made his exit. It'd didn't take long for her to realize that she would need to use the vacuum cleaner. With that task done, she went to check on Timmy who was busy at constructing his 'fort.' He looked at her quizzically for a moment.
“Are you going to be like Ellie?" he asked.
“Yes, and like you and Mark. We'll all have nice smooth heads. Won't that be fun?"
“I guess so."
“I have to go to the store in a little while. Daddy is busy on his project, so you'll have to come with me. I have a little surprise for you too."
“What is it?" Timmy asked eagerly.
“I'm not telling, but you'll like it," Aggie answered.
She went back into the kitchen, picked up the clipper and the rest of the things and took them upstairs to the bathroom where she regularly shaved Ellie and Timmy. Pulling her knit shirt off over her head she pinned a towel around her shoulders. She looked at herself in the mirror and smiled in approval at the nearly bald woman who smiled back at her. You look darned good as a bald woman she thought. Without hesitating she dispensed shaving gel from the aerosol can and applied it to her head. Grinning at herself she rubbed it around until her head was completely covered.
After a week of practice on Ellie and Timmy she approached shaving her own head with confidence. She took her time and shaved it as smoothly as she could manage. She went over it twice just to be sure that it was as smooth as she could get it. When she was finished and had wiped off the remaining foam she examined her head and discovered that she actually loved running her hands over it. It felt so good. When she had applied some moisturizer it felt even better. She applied moisturizer to it a second time just so she had an excuse to luxuriate in the feeling. I've got to convince Lance that he should massage my head. It feels wonderful! she thought to herself.
One more task was left to do. She retrieved the makeup she had used on Ellie's head that first time she had shaved her. Now she used it on her own head. It was a little trouble, especially in the back where she couldn't see as well using a second mirror, but finally she was satisfied. At the last moment she decide to apply a little eye shadow and a very subtle bit of blush on her cheekbones. She smiled in satisfaction at the woman she saw. Awesome! I look terrific, she thought.
She cleaned up and put everything away, picked up her shirt and went back to the master bedroom. After a few minutes of contemplation she put on a pair of slinky pants and a silky blouse that was cut with a wide and fairly deep neckline which provided a good bit of exposure. She smiled again. She was ready for her first outing as a bald woman. Just before leaving she stopped and exchanged her everyday stud pearls with fairly large silver hoops.
She walked briskly back downstairs and then down to the basement where she knocked on the door to the little workshop and entered.
“Lance I'm planning a nice dinner for tonight for us and I need a couple of things for it. So I'll be out for a little while. I'll take Timmy with me so you won't have to worry about him."
“OK, thanks. You got dressed pretty fancy for the grocery store," Lance said.
“I did didn't I? I don't want anyone to mistake me for a boy, so I went a little fancy. I didn't overdo it did I?"
“No, I've always liked that particular outfit."
“Thanks," Aggie said as she went up to him as he stood up. She was well aware of the fact that Lance liked that particular outfit.
“Are you going to be OK going out?" Lance asked. “I mean with nothing on your head."
“It's part of the deal. I'm not going to hid, so I might as well get used to it. Now's as good a time as any," Aggie smiled at him.
“I suppose so," Lance said as Aggie stepped toward him.
She wrapped her arms around him and gave him a very satisfactory embrace making sure that there was full body contact followed by a thoroughly convincing kiss which he found himself returning more eagerly than he had expected.
“See you later," Aggie said, her tone and the little wiggle of her hips as she turned and left leaving little doubt that later might turn out to be quite pleasant.
She went outside to retrieve Timmy, ushered him inside, brushed off the worst of the accumulated dirt and had him wash his hands. Timmy opened the back door of their car and climbed into the car seat where he quickly fastened the safety harness around himself.
They arrived at the mall and went in, Aggie walking briskly holding Timmy's hand. She headed to the same booth that she had used with Ellie. She noted people looking at her, but she only smiled. Her mood was upbeat. There was no feeling of awkwardness. She was comfortable with herself and quite unconcerned about what other people might think. Somehow her decision to embrace Lance's threat – his promise – as she had described it, had had the opposite effect from the one he had intended. She was happy, no, elated at how she looked and a sense of rightness and serenity had infused her.
“Here we are Timmy. I think it's time for you to get your ears pierced. What kind of earrings would you like?" she asked matter-of-factly.
“Shiny ones like that," Timmy said pointing to a pair of sparkling studs.
She noted that the same clerk was present. She wondered if she would remember her as the Mother of the bald girl whose ears she had pierced just a week earlier. She smiled as the clerk struggled not to stare at her head.
“Looks good doesn't it?" Aggie said as she ran her hand over her head.
The clerk had a sudden fit of coughing as she choked on the words she needed to say as they collided with a lot of other words that she was trying desperately to hold back.
“I'm sorry. You really got me tangled up. I don't see a lot of good looking bald women."
“I'll bet you don't need more than one or two fingers to count them," Aggie laughed.
“You're the Mother of that bald girl that got her ears pierced last week, aren't you?" the clerk suddenly put things together.
“That's right. My daughter Ellie got her head shaved last Saturday and you pierced her ears last Sunday. So now it's my turn. I got my head shaved this morning. I like it. I think I look terrific as a bald woman. Ellie and I are going to be setting the trend around here," Aggie told her smiling happily.
“I must admit that you're quite striking with a bald head. You seem so at ease and confident too. Do you like it that much already?"
“I've found the perfect look for myself. It was like a bolt of lightening. It was a revelation. By the time I had gotten it shaved smooth like this I knew I had arrived. I'm bald and I can't imagine being any other way." Aggie tried to explain.
“So you came here. I guess you must want to get your ears pierced again," the clerk said with an amused smile.
“That too, but Timmy wanted to get his ears pierced last week and that's the first thing on my list."
“Have you picked out what you want?"
“Timmy saw a pair of diamonds, although I suppose they were really sapphire or something like that."
“I have some small cubic zirconia trainers that would work. I'll get them," the clerk responded.
“Timmy, it hurts a little bit when you get your ears pierced. You remember Ellie cried," Aggie explained.
“Does it hurt for a long time?"
“No. Just a minute or less. It's like some one gave you a hard pinch. It hurts but it doesn't last long. If you think it might hurt too much you can just say you don't want to do it," Aggie told him.
“I want to even if it hurts."
“You're brave and strong."
The clerk had returned with a tray with a selection of starters among which were several pairs of CZ and sapphire studs. After a little hesitation Timmy chose the small CZ studs.
“I like those," he said pointing to the small CZ studs.
“Those are the best ones. They're surgical stainless steel, even the clip," the clerk pointed out.
“Good. Are you ready," Aggie asked Timmy.
The clerk helped him up on the high stool where she cleaned his ears with antiseptic and then carefully marked them with little red dots.
“I'm going to put on this numbing lotion. It helps for people with sensitive earlobes. I think it will help," the clerk said as she swabbed both ears with a clear solution. After a minute or so she re-applied a red dot to each earlobe, marking the spot where the little stud would be placed.
“How does that look," she asked Aggie.
“It looks exactly right to me."
The clerk fiddled with her piercing tool for a minute, then inserted a stud in it.
“OK Timmy. Hold very still. Now squeeze the seat really hard," she said as she held her piercing tool exactly centered on the red dot. There was a SNAP and Timmy jerked and yelped.
“Oow," he exclaimed as tears welled up in his eyes.
Aggie quickly came to his rescue.
“That was very brave Timmy," she said as she handed him a tissue. “You did better than Ellie."
The clerk carefully put on the little butterfly clip on the post. “Can I do the other one now?"
Timmy wiped his eyes with the tissue and snuffled once then sat up straight again.
“OK."
“I'm ready. Hold on." The “SNAP occurred again.
Timmy grunted and more tears appeared, but he maintained his composure. He still had the tissue and wiped his eyes and then his nose which had started to drip.
“You did great Timmy! I hope I can do as well," Aggie praised him. “And it looks good too."
Indeed she thought he looked very sweet with his smooth bald head and sparkling earrings.
“We'll have to make sure you keep them very clean until they get healed," Aggie told him. “Why don't you sit right over there for a while while I get my ears pierced again?"
“So you want yours pierced again?" The clerk asked.
“Actually I want them pierced twice more, so I'll be triple pierced. Can you do that for me," Aggie asked.
“I'm sorry, but since we use this piercing tool I can only do one. You have to take out your present earrings so I can do it."
“That's too bad. You should go back to using the needle so you can do multiples."
“I know, but the company wants to use this piercer. They claim it's safer."
“That could be. I think I've seen some pretty young people working here. Let me take care of my bill for Timmy and we'll be on our way."
“You don't want to get a second piercing?"
“I'll go to another place where I know they can do multiples. Besides I'm getting a nose stud too."
“A nose stud! Really? I wish we could do those. I know we'd get a lot of business. Well good luck."
“Thanks."
Aggie signed the credit card receipt and turned to Timmy who had been sitting on a bench just outside the booth. She walked over to him.
“Are you OK, honey," she asked.
“I felt funny," Timmy answered.
“I think you had a little reaction. Lots of people do. Let's hold hands while we walk to a different place. If you feel funny again we'll sit down."
It was a large enclosed mall on two floors with four different department stores, a large grocery store and literally a hundred or more smaller stores. She stopped in front of one of the large floor maps and looked at the list of store types. Finally she found what she was looking for under specialty stores. It was tucked away in one corner at the very end of a blind corridor. She looked around to make sure she had her bearings then took Timmy's hand again and led the way. Timmy seemed to have recovered from his 'funny' feeling so they make good time to “Earnie's Body Shop."
“Here we are Timmy. We'll be here a little while. You can sit over there and read this book while I get my ears pierced. Then we'll get you a nice snack," Aggie promised him.
Timmy sat down and Aggie stepped through the open door of the shop to be greeted by a heavily pierced young woman.
“Hi, I'm Candi. What can I help you with?"
“I want to get two more piercing in my ears and a nice nose stud on the right side. I'd like cubic zirconia for all of them, with the nose stud being the smallest."
“Let me get Karl. He'll be the person doing you."
Karl appeared from the back of the shop.
“Hi. I'm Karl and you are...?"
“I'm Aggie. I'm getting two more piercings in my ears and a nose stud on the right side – all cubic zirconia and surgical stainless steel. Can you do that.
“Absolutely. Candi bring out all the CZ studs we have and those CZ nose screws too.
Ten minutes later Aggie had made her choices. The nose stud was only two millimeters. She knew she would purchase larger ones later, but the small one would do for the months needed for that piercing to heal. She chose four and three millimeter round stones for her ears.
“Candi, would you please watch out for my son Timmy while I get this done. I don't want him to wander away."
“There's a folding chair in back. I can bring it out front and he can sit here with me. I can watch him better that way," Candi offered.
“Be right back," Karl said as he hurried back to get the chair.
A few minutes later Timmy was sitting just inside the doorway of the shop being watched by Candi. Aggie was sitting in a padded chair with Karl beside her on a stool and a tray of tools, studs and various other items beside him.
Aggie was gratified to see that he washed his hands thoroughly before he donned the surgical gloves. After several questions about what kind of earrings she expected to wear he marked the locations of the two additional piercings and gave Aggie a mirror to inspect them. Half an hour later Aggie had two studs sparkling above the silver hoop earrings she had worn when she entered the shop. She also had a small sparkling stone in the crease of her right nostril. She examined herself in a large mirror and smirked at herself with pleasure. She had always envied those women her age who had multiple earrings. Now she felt free to do that and more. She had a hard time pulling herself away from the mirror where she was admiring her nose jewel.
“It's great. It really complements my bald head don't you think? I've always wanted to do this."
“It think it looks fantastic! It looks so natural. How long have you been bald?"
“Actually I had it done just this morning. I used some make up to make it look natural. I'd been thinking about it for a week though. When it was done I was so happy and I felt so, well, liberated that I decided to get all these piercings done. I love it all!"
“You look great. Timmy looks good with his ears pierced. Do you keep him shaved?"
“Yes. He gets shaved every other day. His eleven year old sister gets her head shaved smooth every day and her fourteen year old brother shaves himself every day," Aggie laughed.
“You're kidding me, right? You've got three kids and you keep them all shaved bald?" Candi was incredulous.
“We're all bald and we all love being bald. They have some bald friends too, both boys and girls. Maybe it's catching on" Aggie laughed again.
“Maybe so, but I don't see many of them," Candi laughed.
“Timmy, how many bald friends do you have?" Aggie asked.
“Willie, Johnny and Maurice. Albert is almost bald. Janny said she wanted to be bald too like her brother," Timmy answered promptly.
“There you go Candi. It's starting with the kids who've discovered how nice it is to have a smooth bald head. I've got to get to the grocery store. Thank Karl for his excellent work." Aggie responded as she handed the signed credit card receipt back to Candi.
She still felt exhilarated by the day's events. She wasn't sure how Lance would respond to her radical change of outlook, but she was determined to make it work with him. It had been a breakthrough in the way she thought about herself.
“Let's go Timmy. I have to pick up a few things at the grocery. We're going to get some of those chocolate chip cookies that are near the grocery," Aggie said still rather euphoric from her piercing experience. She kept wanting to look in every window to see the bald woman with the multiple earrings and nose stud that she had become. She realized that she was probably feeling like a rebellious teenager, something that she had never before had the courage to be. I'm having a late teen rebellious outburst was the thought that went through her mind as she laughed inwardly.
Half an hour later, purchases made, she was ready to check out. With Timmy pushing the shopping cart she had been up and down several of the isles looking for the items she needed. She smiled engagingly at every one who stared at her and even greeted a few quite unselfconsciously. She laughed infectiously almost without anything triggering it. She almost skipped through the store. She greeter the checkout lady effusively. She had been through her line quite a few times over the last several years.
“Wonderful day isn't it? I like this store. I almost always find what I'm looking for. I shop here all the time."
“I guess it is a nice day. I haven't seen much of it. We've been busy," she said as she looked up at Aggie.
Suddenly recognition flashed through her consciousness.
“Oh, I know you don't I. Is something wrong?" she asked seriously.
“Not a thing. I've never felt better in my life. I got my head shaved and I have a whole new and better outlook on everything," Aggie replied.
“Well, you certainly sound cheerful," Linda according to her name tag, said, with a small laugh.
“Oh I am. I feel like a whole new woman. I guess I'll start acting a little bit less over the top in a few day, but for now I'm absolutely blown away at how I look and feel as a bald woman," Aggie said.
“It's pretty obvious that you're enthusiastic about it. You make it seem rather enticing," Linda answered.
“I seriously recommend it to anyone who'll listen. Get your head shaved and discover a whole new positive outlook on life," Aggie said with another infectious laugh.
“You do look quite attractive with your head shaved. I'm surprised it's so flattering to your face. I guess it must bring out your eyes or something. And you're so enthusiastic about it, that it's infectious," Linda laughed.
“Well, thank you. I'm certain that you'll be seeing my bald head regularly in the future. Come on Timmy. Let's get back home so you can work on your fort and I can work on my dinner and some other things," Aggie said, her infectious laugh bursting forth once again.
Aggie pulled into the garage and got out of the car followed quickly by Timmy.
“We'd better go show your Daddy our new earrings," Aggie said as she deposited her bag of groceries and another bag on the counter and head toward the basement stairs.
“We're back," Aggie announced cheerfully after she knocked and opened the door.
“Everything OK?" Lance asked without looking up form the delicate task that he was just completing.
“We did do something that we wanted to do, which you may think is a little extreme," Aggie told him with a big smile as she walked up to him and leaned over so she could offer a kiss.
Lance looked at her quizzically. “What?"
“I have some new earrings, two more in fact. See?" She turned her head so he could see the two additional earring in her right ear and the little nose stud as well.
“Well that's not particularly extreme. You pointed out that a lot of women have two and a few have three or more," Lance offered.
“Not many of them have a little nose stud like this," Aggie said as she pointed out the sparkling little stone nestled in the crease of her right nostril with a little laugh.
Lance remained silent for a moment before he answered. He sensed that the rules had altered. He didn't know what was happening, but clearly something had happened this morning. Aggie had seemed strangely relaxed during the shaving process. She had seemed oddly at ease about going out with her bald head exposed. And now she seemed confident and pleased about her new earrings and nose ring. What is going on with this woman? Lance thought.
“I haven't seen any women with one of those. Isn't that going a little overboard?" Lance asked in as calm a voice as he could manage.
“Oh, I think it is, but I've wanted to have one ever since I was fifteen and saw a girl from India with a much larger ruby in her nose. I almost got one when I was eighteen, and I was going to get one just before we met, but didn't want to do anything that would give you the wrong impression so I didn't go through with my plan. Now that I'm bald I feel like I can express myself the way I've always wanted. I'm still me though, just a little bit more expressive and maybe a little more interesting," Aggie laughed again.
“If it makes you happy I guess I shouldn't make an issue of it," Lance said in a voice that said that he would like to make an issue of it.
“It does make me happy and you're right about not making an issue of it. There's one more thing that I think you shouldn't make an issue of. Come over here and show Daddy you new earrings," Aggie said.
“What on earth has gotten into you Aggie?" Lance blurted out.
“Nothing really. Timmy has several friend in his class that have earrings. He wanted to have them and picked out what he wanted himself. I think he looks very nice with his earrings. It's becoming very popular with boys. So I had his ears pierced. It's some extra work for me keeping them clean, but I don't mind. I think you would look very handsome with earrings yourself," Aggie said.
Lance grimaced at her. “Did you want to have earrings Timmy?"
“Wesley has earrings. I wanted to have them too. I didn't cry when the lady put them in. I felt funny at first. I like them. Can I keep them?" Timmy asked very seriously.
Lance looked up at Aggie and saw an expression on her face that told him that saying no was going to have unintended consequences.
“Well, since you seem to want them so much, I suppose I should say yes. So, yes, you can keep them."
“What do you say Timmy?" Aggie said.
“Thanks very much Daddy," Timmy hastened to add.
“And I thank you too dear. I know it's a bit of a shock, but everything's going to be OK. I'm sure of it," Aggie smiled at him and gave him another kiss. “I'll have dinner ready at the usual time. Should I come down to remind you?"
“I'll keep track of the time. Is Ellie going to be home?"
“She should be back by four thirty, so we'll all be here for dinner."
“OK."
Aggie gave him a big smile as she exited. She almost danced up the stairs. She couldn't keep herself from stopping in the little half-bath to look at herself again. She couldn't resist giving her head a little rub as her face broke out in a big smile. I never imagined how much I would love being bald, she thought as she finally managed to turn away from the mirror.
She looked out the kitchen window to check on Timmy. Finally she went upstairs to change clothes. She didn't want to mess up her outfit fixing dinner. She pondered for a few minutes before she decided that she would change to something practical for the kitchen, but just before putting it on the table she would change back to a nicer outfit.
She looked at the clock. It was a little after four. Ellie would be home soon. She expected Mark before five. She began thinking about how she would approach Kate and some of the other women that she had become friends with, especially Kate, her best friend and, of course, Sibyl the Mother of Charlene. She wanted to encourage Sibyl to keep Charlene's head shaved. After a while some plans began to take shape.
She thought she heard the front door open.
“Ellie, is that you," she called down the stairs.
“It's me Mom," Ellie called back as she headed up the stairs.
“Did you kids have a good time?"
“It was great Mom," Ellie said as she reached the top of the stairs and saw Aggie for the first time.
“MOM! she cried as she saw Aggie's shaved head. “You shaved your head!"
“Why, yes I did. How do you like it?"
“That's so wild! You look great!"
“I thought so too. I do believe I like being bald just as much as you do. I'll have to shave myself every day."
“Oh my gosh. You got your ears pierced again!" Ellie said in astonishment.
“I think I suddenly did all the things that I'd wanted to do when I was a girl, but never had the courage to do. You inspired me Ellie," Aggie laughed.
“Can I get another set of earrings?"
“When you're twelve I think you can if you've taken care of the piercing you have now. And when you're sixteen, you can get one of these if you want," Aggie said as she pointed out the little nose stud in her right nostril.
“Mom! Wow! You really went wild!"
“When I was about thirteen or fourteen, there was a girl in my school who had just come to the US with her parents. They were from India. She had a red jewel in her nose that was bigger than this. I was fascinated. I always wanted to get one. So today I finally did what I'd always wanted to do."
“That is so cool Mom. Does Daddy know?"
“Yes indeed. I showed it to him the moment I got home. And Timmy has pierced ears now and your Daddy agreed that he could keep them. Your Daddy isn't going to object to you keeping your head shaved any more, but maybe it would be a good idea not to talk much about it with him for a while until he gets used to the idea."
“Timmy got his ears pierced! OK, I won't talk about it. Do you think you can get Wendy's Mom to shave her head too? She really likes the way Wendy and Diane look."
“We'll see. You never know, maybe she'll take to the idea," Aggie laughed. “Looks like she did a good job shaving your head today."
“Yeah. She can do it almost as good as you can. Diane does hers herself."
“I'm not surprised. Oh, by the way. Let's keep my bald head a secret, at least until you get to school Monday. I want to surprise Wendy's Mom. OK?"
“OK Mom, but I really want to tell everybody that my Mom is bald and looks so great."
“You just have to keep it to yourself until Monday. Now I'd like you to put your things away and set the table for me. We're going to have a nice dinner tonight. Here, I need to give you a good hug," Aggie said as she embraced Ellie who returned her hug eagerly.
Mark arrived a few moments later and came through the back door and saw Aggie.
“Mom! Is that you? You got your head shaved!"
“Indeed I did Mark. How does it look?"
It's very cool Mom! I guess you really like the bald look."
“I really do, Mark. I hope you're OK with a bald Mom for the duration."
“No prob! You look good. What does Dad think? He wasn't too happy about Ellie."
“Everything is fine now. He's a little shocked, but he'll be just fine. Just don't bring up the subject, unless he does of course."
“Got it."
“I forgot to mention it, but I had Timmy's ears pierced today. Your Dad is OK with that too, but we probably shouldn't talk about that either."
“Timmy!" Mark said in surprise. “You just let Ellie get hers pierced!"
“I have a different outlook on things now. I'm a little surprised at myself, but I don't regret it a bit," Aggie said, once again displaying her infectious laugh.
Dinner was uneventful, but happy. Aggie was buoyant and the kids were animated. There were lively descriptions of accomplishments from the kids. Mark and Ellie were enthusiastic about their various activities, and their plans for the future. Mark was the first to praise Aggie's meal.
“Mom, this is really good."
“I think so to Mom. I really like it," Ellie chimed in.
Finally Lance voiced his approval. “It's a great dinner Aggie."
“Thanks. I had fun fixing it too," Aggie said, her infectious laugh bursting forth again.
By the time they had cleaned up the table and the kitchen, Ellie's lack of sleep caught up with her and her last bit of energy had faded. She was yawning and could barely stay awake. At Aggie's suggestion she was in bed and asleep by eight thirty. Timmy followed almost immediately.
Later that evening with Ellie and Timmy in bed and Mark hard at work on his homework, Aggie prepared a little surprise. She had changed clothes again, this time to a simple red party dress that she had not worn for more than a year. There was a special dessert in the fridge that she had purchased at the bakery shop on Friday. She got it out and warmed it in the oven. She also took out the bottle of Viognier that she had retrieved earlier from the small cooled wine storage cabinet that was in the garage.
“I have a little dessert for us," she said as she sat the the silver tray on the coffee table in front of Lance. “Would you like to do the honors?"
Lance looked up at her in surprise.
“What brought this on?" he asked.
“We've haven't had a little party of our own in quite a while and I thought tonight would be a good time to do something fun for ourselves."
“I can deal with that. You look good in that dress. Is it my imagination or do you like being bald."
“I like it Lance. Actually I more than like it. I've never felt so good about myself. I'm very happy and I feel more alive than ever. I hope you can deal with your bald wife. I think I'm going to be a better wife and Mother. Does that seem too ridiculous to you?"
“It's seems strange for you to enjoy being bald and to be so enthusiastic about it. Is it the same with Ellie?"
“She's very happy being bald. It made her feel special and she's very enthusiastic about staying bald. She really appreciates the convenience. Besides that I've never seen her so determined to do well in school. She comes home and immediately attacks her work," Aggie tried to explain.
“It's beyond my comprehension, that's for sure. You went out today and I guess you were comfortable being out with a bald head."
“That's true. I didn't have any hesitation at all. I know people stared at me but I wasn't the least bothered by it. I felt perfectly normal and quite confident. I knew I liked the way I looked – it just felt right. That's about all I can tell you."
“I'm going to have a bald wife and daughter for a while I take it."
“Yes. I want to stay bald. I know it's the right thing for me. I would be less happy if I had to let my hair grow. I would love it if you could see me as bald and beautiful."
I certainly see you as happy and confident. And you certainly look good in that dress. Maybe someday I'll see you as beautiful. I think I can accept you as a bald woman too. Obviously you're the same woman I've always known – maybe a little more enthusiastic about things than before. Still, it's only been a day and you'll have to give me a little more time to make the adjustment."
“That's OK. So long as you're willing to accept and respect me we'll make it work. I still love you as much as or more than ever. Now let's eat our cake and enjoy this wine."
Aggie sat down beside him and enjoyed her dessert and a sip of her wine. After a few more sips she rested her head on his shoulder and put her hand on his thigh. After another sip of his wine Lance slipped his arm around her shoulder. Aggie relaxed and snuggled into his embrace. Some time later, the wine forgotten they repaired to their bedroom where they enjoyed an unusually satisfying round of love making even though Lance had avoided touching her bald head – at least most of the time. She went to sleep with her head cradled on his shoulder.
Sunday
Aggie woke up early as usual. She felt refreshed and eager. It took her little time to decide that she would fix a special breakfast of egg soufflé and sausage. It was a very good morning. Lance was more attentive than usual. The kids were happy and cooperative. Before Lance left for his golf game he gave her a quite satisfactory kiss. Her spirits buoyed a bit more.
Some time later Aggie called Ellie and Timmy. “OK, guys, I fixed you some lunch. After that I need to get you shaved."
It didn't take long. She had become quite proficient at the job.
“There you go Ellie," Aggie said. “It looks very good now that you've picked up a little color – quite natural looking. Feels good too. How is your homework going?"
“I'm almost done Mom. It was more than I thought it was, but I'll be done pretty soon. I really like it right after you shave it. I wish I could keep it like that all the time."
“I don't know how that could be done. Anyway that might mean you could never grow any hair again. I don't think you want to do that. Come on Timmy. Time for your shave."
Timmy's shave went even faster that Ellie's.
“All done Timmy," Aggie said as she finished wiping his head dry after applying a little moisturizer. “I'd better take care of your ears too.“
She loosened the little butterfly clips. Using a swab she carefully cleaned around his new earrings on both sides, applying a generous amount of cleaner then applied the antiseptic solution.
“Don't squirm Timmy. It's doesn't sting does it?"
“No."
“OK. Let me finish. It'll only take a couple of minutes," Aggie admonished him.
She readjusted the clips. “It's done. You can go. Now it's my turn."
With the kids gone, Aggie proceeded to apply shaving cream to her own head. She had showered early in the morning and still remembered the pleasant experience of having warm water running over her bald head. The shaving cream was cool, but soon felt comfortable as her head warmed it. She spread it around slowly and thoroughly, allowing it to do the expected job of softening the tiny bristles. The hum of the shaver was loud in her ears at the beginning, but seemed to diminish as she progressed. Working her way up and back she completed the right side. The top followed, then the left side. She knew that she would need to develop some skill with her left hand in order to do the left side and the left side of the back. She closed her eyes and concentrated on feeling where the shaver should be, trying to imagine exactly where it was from feel. She did use the mirror as she used her left hand on that side of her head even though the mirror confused her for a while, because what she saw in the mirror seemed to be opposite from the motions she needed to have her hand make. Finally she began to adjust to the mirror image.
After a brief examination of her head, she shaved a few places a second time then cleaned off her head and applied moisturizer. She decided to forgo the makeup that she had used the day before. Looking at herself in the mirror she was very pleased with the way she looked. Once more she experienced a delicious tingle across her shoulders and down her back as she saw the outrageously good looking bald woman that she had become. She felt the same exhilaration and
sense of aliveness that had come over her yesterday. I'm bald and beautiful and it's wonderful, she thought as she savored the soft smooth skin of her head.
