Melanie was 21 and going to be a senior in college. Around August as usual she left her parents house to return to her dorm on campus for the upcoming semester.
Melanie was particularly excited because she would be graduating at the end of the year.
She loved being away. All her life living with her Mom and Dad and her one brother and sister She felt like she would never be on her own. And because she was the oldest was told to always set an example to her younger siblings.
In her freshmen year while away at college her and her girlfriends went into the city and all got there belly buttons pierced. Melanie felt so liberated. Her parents were so strict that she would had never been able to do that at home. And when she did visit she was able to hide it.
August came and Melanie said good-bye to her family and packed her car to go drive back up to Maine for college. It was dreadfully hot in New Jersey where Her parents and her home was. Her mom and dad said good-bye. Melanie mom told her to call when she arrived safely. And as usual Her mom said good-bye and stroked Melanie's long golden brown hair.
Melanie had a long drive ahead of her. But she didn't mind she was excited to see her college friends again. In her home town Melanie was known as the girl with the beautiful long hair. And it was. Melanie's hair was always neatly trimmed and very long and straight. Her length of her hair rested just past the middle of her back. Melanie often thought about changing it or cutting it but the peer pressure would always prevent her. Even in college everyone loved her long hair. During the winter and fall semesters when she would come home for break her mom would take her to the salon and she'd have her hair trimmed.
Never more then an inch or two or the amount that grew from her last school break.
Melanie arrived the next morning in Maine and her college and was greeted by her friends. She was happy to see her roommate Kimberly too. And even more happy to see her boyfriend Josh. Melanie was surprised to see Josh appearance though Before summer break he had short hair but obviously let his hair grow out. He was now sporting a shag hair style that was popular in the 70's and recently made a come back. Melanie didn't know if she liked it. But hugged and kissed Josh. He looked at her as if he was waiting to hear what she though. Melanie replied "Your hair your grew it huh" "Yeah" Josh answered so you like it or what? Melanie was slow to answer but then diplomatically replied "it's cute I'm just not used to seeing you with longer hair" and added "I'll get used to it though" and smiled
Several days alter fall semester started. It became a busy time for Melanie and all her friends. It wouldn't be until November when she would see her parents for thanksgiving. As the weeks went on. Melanie went to her classes. On weekends her roommate Kimberly and Kim's boyfriend and Josh would all go out and have a goodtime on weekends or whenever they could.
One day in September Melanie was sitting in her dorm room and Kim came in annoyed.
"What's wrong Kim," Melanie asked as she looked up from her books "oh it's Dave my boyfriend he can be such a jerk" she said "Melanie asked why and told Kim to sit down and tell her. Kim told Melanie that she wanted to get her haircut but Dave said he didn't like short or shorter hair on girls or on her. "That's crazy said Melanie you should be able to do what you want" Kim agreed. Kim then thought "Melanie I've always wanted to ask you have such nice hair did you ever think about.. ya know" Kim asked with hesitation
"WHAT?" asked Melanie. Kim responded "You know want to cut your hair short" Melanie paused. Deep down she did especially in high school and living at home, Then she swore she would do it when she got to college but just like at home she was soon known as the girl with the great smile and gorgeous long silky golden brown hair. Melanie finally answered. "Yeah I guess, but I've always worried what everybody is going to think" Kim responded becoming more defiant to her boyfriends control. "Well guess what that's it I made up my mind I'm going down to that little salon in town and doing it" She said with a certainty in her voice Melanie again looked up from her studying. "Are you serious" she asked "Sure am" said Kimberly. Then Kim asked if Melanie wanted to go with her. "Come on we'll both get makeovers" "I dunno Kim, I'm not sure" Melanie answered with nervousness. "You said you thought about it didn't you well here's your chance." "When are you gonna get the chance to go with your best friend" Melanie answered "Yeah I thought about it but I don't think I could ever go thru with it" There was no use Kim couldn't convince her.
There Melanie sat in her dorm room alone, thinking. Had she really chickened out? She could finally try something new, and plus would had the ease of knowing her friend was getting her haircut too. But then she kept thinking of what others would think. It was a Thursday afternoon. And she studied on. Kim still hadn't come back that night. But assumed Kim was staying over her boyfriends Co-ed dorm room. Around 10pm Josh called and asked and made sure him and Melanie and the gang were all going out the next night. Melanie told him they would but she didn't think Kimberly and her boyfriend Dave would because they were arguing. Although Kim hadn't come back yet so it might be a good sign. Josh asked what the bickering was about. Melanie told him that Kim was planning on getting her haircut but Dave didn't want her to. Then Melanie asked Josh what he though. "What do you mean" asked Josh. "It's none of my business if Kim gets her haircut" "NO you don't understand what would you think if I was to ever cut my hair" asked Melanie? as if to test the waters. Josh answered her. "Well I like your long hair Melanie I do it's great, but I wouldn't stop you if you wanted to." Melanie asked "Really? you wouldn't mind if I cut my hair shorter" "No Mel I love all for you not just one part" Josh responded "Melanie was touched to hear that. Then she added "Well cause Kim wanted me to go with her but I said no" "Well maybe next time Whatever you want" said Josh. Melanie asked Josh then one more question "Do you have a preference over short or long on girls? Josh hesitated "Well I don't know really To be honest, I love your hair but I've always liked short hair on girls.' "REALLY" answered a stunned Melanie "how come you date me and never told me' she asked
"Well like I said it's not about just hair" josh answered honestly. Then Melanie and Josh told each other they loved each other and would see each other the next day.
It was 10:30 now Thursday night. Melanie now was really starting to wish he would had went with Kim to get her hair cut. But she didn't even know where to start. She didn't have any style ideas or anything. Just to appease her mind she put her shoes on and drove over to the all night Pharmacy at bought a magazine they had for short Hairstyles for woman. When she got back She plopped it on her desk and started looking thru. It was about 11pm and Kim came in. Melanie looked up and to her surprise hardly recognized Kimberly. Kimberly had her long beautiful blonde tresses cut off. Kimberly's hair was a stunning blonde bob now that was just about chin length. Kim swirled around "What do you think? asked Kim to a shocked Melanie "Oh my God I. Love it" said Melanie ecstatically. When Kim turned around to show Melanie the back Kim almost fell off her chair. It was incredible looking. The front was cut right up to her chin but angled shorter towards the back. The back of Kim's nape was clippered very short. It was a sight to see with her nape hair neatly clippered and her hair line shaved straight . Her nape hair was about 1 inch long and almost brown. The contrast was great. Her hair was buzzed below her ears and her bob length was laying just above her ear lobe. Just long to tuck the front hair that was longer on her face behind the ear. "What did Dave say?" asked Melanie with a smile on her face. "Well he was pissed at first but after while he started to like it." Kim responded "After I let him stoke my buzzed nape he became a fan really fast" Kim said with a sly laugh. Melanie asked if she too could touch it. Kim said sure. Melanie placed her hands up to Kim's neck and gently stroked it. it felt incredible like peach fuzz. Then she though how this could had been her too, and was mad that she didn't go. Then Kim noticed the magazine "What's this she laughed" Melanie hesitated "It's nothing really as she tried to tuck it under her books "What's 'this? come on Kim laughed and grabbed the magazine from under the books. Kimberly laughed. "I knew you wanted to get your haircut, I told you to come" Kim said with a chuckle. Melanie smiled slightly. "Well I got news for you" said Melanie "Yeah what?" asked Kim "Are you ready for this.. Josh likes short hair on girls. He actually prefers it" Melanie added with a grin "No Way" said Kim with surprise. "That's funny hear I' am fighting to get my haircut with my boyfriend and You don't get your haircut and yours likes short hair."
"Well what am I going to do now I really want to go thru with it" said Melanie. I'm thought about it. How about first thing in the morning we go down to the salon and see if the stylist can fit you in." said Kim. You don't have morning classes right?" she asked. "No only one at 1pm"said Melanie and added "But I don't even know what style to get" 'Or how short" added Melanie "I mean I think we'd look pretty dumb with the same haircuts" she laughed "Yeah that would be silly" said Kim. "Well lets' look thru the magazines" Kim said "Good idea" responded Melanie. After looking thru about two times Melanie picked the hairstyle she wanted. Now only if she can get in the next day can she get his cut
It was 8am and Melanie and Kimberly got up and used the cell phone and called the hair salon that Kim had went to the day before. the stylist Megan said she was low and if they hurried in by 10am She could fit Melanie in.
They drove to the place about ten minutes away. and walked in. It was a really nice small but up scale trendy salon. Kim had known about it for a while when she'd pass it driving or hard the other girls on campus would go there. Megan was the only one in the salon. "Hi you must be Melanie" Megan said with a smile. Megan brought Melanie over to the first chair. The salon was very nice. it had wood floors and lots of lights and chrome. Kimberly told Megan. "This is my friend I was telling you about yesterday" "Yes It's great to meet you Melanie" said Megan "Same here "Melanie said. Megan told Melanie to sit down in the chair and relax. Megan placed a big black cape around Melanie's body and then placed a white cloth and towel around her neck. And turned the chair around so Melanie could face the mirror. So what brings you hear today Melanie" asked Megan. Megan looked to be in her late 20's with cute cinnamon colored hair that was cut in a lip length bob with thick bangs just above her eyebrows. "Well I've been meaning to .. And I always wanted to get my haircut short" answered Melanie a bit nervous. Kim had sat down on a side seat relaxing and listening. Megan could sense Melanie was a bit nervous. "Don't worry everything will be great." "So what do you have in mind?" asked Megan. Melanie looked at her reflection in the mirror. She was really tired of seeing her long plain straight one length long hair staring back. it was now or never she though. Melanie took a picture out of her pocket and lifted it under the caper and showed Megan. Well, I was thinking this what do you think? As Melanie showed Megan.
Megan looked a the picture. It was a picture of the singer of the Dixie Chicks Natalie Maines. Megan inspected the cut. It was blonde but the style was very short and sassy. It was almost a bob but almost a pixie too. It was very different the front was longer a little past the temples and side swept but the sides were very short and the back from the other picture underneath showed it was clippered very short. Kim had already seen Melanie's pick. Megan responded. Well, you want your color to stay right? she asked "Yeah I like my color" Melanie added. "Megan gave her thoughts 'I think it would look stunning" "I'm surprised you picked this your hair's gonna be shorter then your friend Kim here" "I don't mind I figure if I'm going to do this lets go all the way." She said getting a little more confident. Megan added "You really did pick a great cut. With your light brown hair and face shape your really going to turns some heads with this cut." "As long as my boyfriend likes it I'll be happy" Melanie added. "Oh we got another one who doesn't like short hair?" Megan asked with a smile. "No he DOES actually like it" Melanie said with a chuckle. "Ok I'm getting jealous your gonna look stunning and you got a boyfriend that likes short hair" Megan said with a laugh. They all laughed. "OK lets' get to work" Megan added
Megan got the spray bottle and wet down Melanie's hair. It glistened from the water. Her long wet hair lied down the back of the chair. Megan combed thru it very gently making sure it was straight. Well, should we do this in a ponytail or prolong it with a slow straight across cut first?" Megan asked "Oh It doesn't matter that's up to you" Melanie said now starting to get a little nervous again.
"OK Well since were going so short I'll do a blunt cut first." Megan said. With that Melanie's makeover was about to begin. Megan placed the sharp scissors to about collar length and measured with the comb. Megan placed the scissors in the middle first then started the cut. Shhhick schikkk. Melanie could feel her neck become exposed now Megan started in the middle and went from the middle to the left. Instantly 12 inches of Melanie's hair fell behind her to the floor. Then Megan Took the scissors again and measured up and started more towards the far right of her back and starting cutting again. "Shicckkkk shiiiikkkk" Melanie's wet long 12 inch stands fell to the floor. Megan continued until the scissors met the middle where she started. Melanie could believe it. It felt so odd. The weight of her hair gone. And her neck felt airy. Megan inspected to make sure it was even. Melanie's hair in the back was cut bluntly into a bob to just about the collar. Then Megan combed and sprayed the hair that laid on Melanie's face and sides. Megan was giving Melanie the haircut of her life. The fact that she took her time and let Melanie enjoy the stages till the final result was a pleasure to Melanie. And Megan knew this. Seeing Melanie never had short hair Megan wanted her to experience the delight. Megan then placed the scissors to Melanie's face on the left side and stating cutting. More of her hair fell to her lap. Megan continued until the scissors reached the other shorn hair in the back right on Melanie's neck. Then Megan went around to the other side and placed the scissors again now to Melanie's right side. She began to cut Melanie watched in the mirror. Schiick schiik. Megan cut perfectly along Melanie's' cheek till the hair was the same length as the back. Then stopped for a minute "Well what Do you think so far" asked Megan as she inspected Mel's hair. Melanie looked in awe in the mirror. She loved it so far. Her hair was now cut into a great bob cut that was just below her lips. Melanie could feel the air in the room hitting her neck. Melanie then got her hand and felt it. Her neck felt weird she loved how the length was just under her ears but she felt a lot of shorter straggly hair under that on her nape. "Don't worry honey. I'll take care of that" Megan said as she placed her hand on Melanie's shoulder. Melanie looked over at Kimberly "Well what Do you think" she asked Kimberly smiled and said it looks great Mel" Well should we continue asked Megan" "Just wanted to make sure I'd give you the chance to tell me in case you don't want to go shorter. she added. "No as much as I like this, Let's go for the style I showed you" Melanie said with more confidence now that she say how stunning she could look with short hair. Ok Here we go then" said Megan
Megan then got small clips and pinned Melanie's hair up. Leaving her bob and nape hair loose all below her ears. It looked cute Like a style when a short bob is pony tailed up from high. Megan kept he front hair which hung on Melanie's face loose for now. Megan got out the clippers and put a guard number 2 guard on them. "Ok don't be nervous when you feel this" she said to Mel.
And with that Megan turned the clippers on. The humming was loud but Melanie liked the sound. Megan told Melanie to place her head forward and held her neck gently so that her chin touched her chest. Melanie's bobbed hair felt funny touching below her lips she thought.
And then Megan placed the clippers to Melanie's nape. Bzzzzzzzzzz Bzzzzzzzz
Megan worked her way up. Melanie was getting aroused by the sensation of the clippers vibrating on her neck as they sheared her hair off. Megan was taking them even higher then she had down for Kimbery's earlobe bob. Megan gently buzzed up Melanie's; nape and neck until she reached the pinned up hair at the very top of Melanie's ears. Then Megan continued with each pass up from the middle then the right and left side. Within a minute. Melanie's hair was now an incredible 1/4 inches long.
Then Megan pinned Melanie's hair up on each side about an inch over each of her ears. left and right side. Then turned the clippers on again and brought them to her sideburns. This time though she set the clippers to a three at first. Bzzzz bzzzz Melanie could hear the clippers very loudly being they were next to her ears. Megan made gentle passes around the shape of her ear. Then went to the right side and did the same. Now all that remained pinned up was Melanie's top hair. Megan looked at Melanie's' cut so far. The sides were one setting longer then the back but that was ok for now because Megan planned on using the comb, scissor and clippers to mesh it together.
She unloosed the hair clip and Melanie's bobbed hair fell to her face. It looked strange to her seeing it was an undercut. Megan then wet it down some more and took the scissors. Carefully she gave Melanie a side part and placed the scissors to her face to cut the bangs. She did it perfectly cutting with just the right angle of the scissors and then combed her hair over to the side part. Megan continued. When she reached the sides She Carefully tapered Melanie's hair with a comb and scissors. Then as she reached the back she had to cut the bobbed hair there too. She used the clippers once more and the comb and meshed in Melanie's hair. Within several seconds the remaining bobbed length hair fell to the floor. Megan then went over to the sides one more time and shaped up around the ears using a # 2 guard to make it the same length as the back. Then for finishing touches Megan used a smaller clipper with no guard and cleaned up the nape to make it look shaved ,clean and straight
And with that and one last snip here and there. Megan was done. "Well I'm done what do you think? She asked Melanie and Kimberly. Melanie looked a the mirror. She was stunned. Then immediately fell in love with her new haircut. She rustled her finger thru her newly cut hair. she loved how it even looked great after she messed it up. Her hair was side parted and she had side swept bangs that reached just about past her temples and shorter pieces above her eyes. The top of her hair was about 3 to 4 inches long at best. Melanie's sides started buzzed to 1/4 and her hair which was meshed in perfectly got gradually longer to match the top of her hair as she went higher with her hands. Then Megan added the finishing touches. She used some Palamade and briskly ran it thru the back above the ears and on the nape. Within seconds. after taking hold Megan got a mirror and showed Melanie the back. She was flabbergasted. Never in her wildest dreams would she ever think she'd look so hot with this cut. But She loved it and kept looking. The back Was neatly clippered and in a very nice shaved shape. She touched it and loved the feel of the buzzed back and especially how high it went. Then as she looked higher she could see Megan used the palmade to spike her hair in the back. Which looked adorable. Her hair was spiked and very short about two inches and got longer the higher she went up. The nape it's self was reduced to a neatly clippered 1/4
Melanie could honestly say this was the best cut she ever got. Megan took the cape off and Melanie got one more glance. Her cute turquoise shirt and her jeans and her new short hair cut looked back in the mirror She loved when she turned sideway she could see the spiked hair from the back. It was indeed a unique cut. It incorporated the trendy wispiness the, shortness of a pixie and the contrast of the bob all in one. Kimberly looked in amazement. 'Damn now you have hotter air the me" she said laughing.
That night Melanie and Kimberly met there boyfriends When they met at he dorm at first Josh though he was in the wrong room then Melanie turned around and greeted him.'Well what do you think she asked with a huge grin" Josh replied Wow where's' your hair?" "Do you like it" Melanie asked? " Like it I love it" josh said with a smile. But you didn't do this for me did you" "No for both of us" she said and then kissed him
He loved her new haircut. In fact he couldn't keep his hands off it. That night they went out and celebrated with dinner and a movie and drinks.
